Ernest Edward Bland, Jr

Ernest Edward Bland, Jr, 70, of Oxon Hill, MD, and Cabins died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. 

Mr. Bland was born Oct. 10, 1937, in Riverton and was the son of the late Ernest Edward Bland, Sr., and Kate Lucy Bland. 

He graduated from Circleville High School in 1957 and was a retired bus driver for the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority.  He was a member of Solomon Chapel United Methodist Church and Local 689 Teamsters Union.  He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. 

His wife, Gwen Judy Bland, whom he married June 10, 1961, survives. 

Also surviving are three sisters, Martha Brotemarkle of Chardon, OH, Frances Bergdoll of Waldorf, MD, and Pasty Armentrout of Woodbridge, VA; a brother, Jerry Bland of Cabins; six grandchildren; two uncles; two aunts; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Vincent Bland, on Dec. 12, 2007.  

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Pastor Steve Davis officiating.  Burial will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.  

Memorial donations may be made to his grandchildren, c/o Patsy Armentrout, 1447 Maryland Ave., Woodbridge, VA  22191.  

Arrangements were by Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg.    

Lona May Bennett Knicely 

Lona May Bennett Knicely, 77, of Mt. Crawford, VA, passed away on Tuesday Sept. 30, 2008, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mrs. Knicely was born on June 16, 1931 in Blue Grass, VA, and was the daughter of the late Edward and Edna Hedrick Bennett.

She worked as a housekeeper for may years, and prior to her illness, she enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.  She was also a member of Kingdom Hall. 

In November 1947, she married Lloyd Henry Knicely, who preceded her in death in March of 1997. 

Survivors include two sons, Lloyd Edward Knicely of Mt. Crawford, VA, Mark Lee Knicely and wife, Ellen of Bridgewater, VA; a daughter, Nancy Shull of Harrisonburg, VA; four grandchildren, Barbara Ryan and companion, Michelle Ryan, Jolene Moyers and husband, Jason, Tina Shull and husband, Chris, and Tim Shull; seven great-grandchildren, Sarah Ryan, Caleb Ryan, Hannah Ryan, Beth Moyers, Katelyn Moyers, Augustus MOyers and Truman Moyers.

Hazel R. Dyer

Mrs. Hazel R. Dyer, 97, of Fort Seybert died Tuesday Sept. 30, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. 

She was born March 20, 1911, at Deer Run and was the daughter of the late Taylor Ruddle and Bessie Hinkle Ruddle.

She had been a schoolteacher at Deer Run and was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Fairview-Bethel United Methodist Church. 

On June 13, 1936, she married George A. Dyer, who preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 1970.

Surviving are two sons, David A. Dyer of Fort Seybert and Roger W. Dyer both of Fort Seybert; two brothers, William Hinkle Ruddle and Raleigh Ruddle, both of Franklin; two grandchildren, Greg Dyer of Fort Seybert and Jody Dyer of Grottoes, VA; and one great-grandson, Dustin Dyer.  

She was preceded in death by two sister, Inez Hartman and Mabel Craig. 

Funeral services were held Friday at the Fairview-Bethel United Methodist Church at Fort Seybert with Pastor Mark James officiating.  Burial was at the Fairview Cemetery at Fort Seybert.

Crystal L. Kennedy 

Crystal Lynn Martell Kennedy, 28, of Staunton, VA, and formerly of Franklin, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at her residence. 

She was born Oct. 19, 1979, in Dover, NH, and was a daughter of Eva Lynn Wood Hartman and Step-daughter of Robert Wayne Hartman of Franklin.  

She attended Franklin High School and Harrisonburg High School and was employed at McDonalds.  

In addition to her mother and step-father, survivors include a daughter, McKenzie Brown of Staunton, VA; three sons, Joseph Wilson Bolton of Dayton, VA and Dustin Andrew Smith and Trenton Michael Smith, both of Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Rachel Arbogast of Petersburg and Sherry Hartman of Franklin; and two brothers, Kevin Thompson, Jr., and Robbie Hartman, both of Franklin.  

Pastor Steve Teter conducted the funeral Monday at Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Samuel B. Propst Cemetery in Franklin.

Jearl Eugene Smith Sr.

Jearl Eugene Smith Sr., 68, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Smith was born Dec. 17, 1939, in Ruddle and was the son of the late Arnold and Lillie Thompson Smith. 

He owned and operated the Appliance Service Company in Rockingham County and was in the Army National Guard. Following his retirement, he briefly was employed with Custom Deliveries and currently with Mid-State Motors in Culpeper, VA.

On Aug. 2, 1965, he married Elizabeth Ann Smith, who survives. 

Also surviving are one son, Jearl E. Smith Jr. and Rachel of New Market, VA; two daughters, Yvonne K. Jackson and Bo of Elkton. VA, and Melissa A. Smith and companion, Travis Rose of Harrisonburg, VA; two brothers, Herald G. Smith of Rawley Springs, VA, and Stanley E. Smith of Bridgewater, VA; two sisters, Donna M. Ferguson and Sherry L. Pennington, both of Upper Tract; two grandchildren, Kina Strother and Krishona Tolliver; one great- grandchild, Antwan Smith and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy Ryan Smith.

Pastor Jim Bailey conducted a funeral service Wednesday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg, VA.  Burial followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
