Edith Mae Vance, 92, of Onego died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Vance was born Oct. 21, 1914, in Job and was the daughter of the late Warnie Hartman and Dellie Roy Hartman.

She was a homemaker and attended Miracle Revival Center.

Her husband, Frank Vance, preceded her in death Nov. 19, 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice “Katty” Vance Heavener of Cabins; three sons, Frank Vance Jr., Bruce Vance and Daniel Vance, all of Onego; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Steve Landis will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at Seneca Rocks Presbyterian Church.   Burial was at the Vance Cemetery near Onego.

Memorial donations may be made to the family, c/o Bruce or Daniel Vance, Onego.

Ronnie Wayne Knight, 52, of 4493 Peake Mountain Road, Fulks Run, VA, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Knight was born Feb. 11, 1955, in Rockingham County, VA, and was the son of Paul Knight of Fulks Run and the late Ruby Hoover Knight.

He worked for Marvel Poultry and Perdue Poultry for many years and most recently gathered eggs for the John Stone Farm. He was a member of Peake Pentecostal Church.

Surviving in addition to his father are two brothers, Speedy Knight of Harrisonburg, VA, and Avis Knight of Fulks Run, VA; and two sisters, Wanda Knight of Brandywine and Carol Knight of Fulks Run, VA.

The Revs. Lancy Knight and Tom Brown conducted the funeral Saturday at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg, VA. Burial will be in the Mount Clinton Cemetery.

Harvey J. Long

Harvey Jay Long, 86, of Hinton, VA, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, at Avante at Harrisonburg, VA, where he had been a patient since July 8, 2007.

Mr. Long was born Sept. 20, 1921, in Onego and was a son of the late Robert and Zernie (Vance) Long.

He was employed at Wampler Foods in Hinton, VA. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a good conduct Medal, American Theater Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon.

He was united in marriage on April 20, 1947, to Merlie Sponaugle Long of Hinton, VA, who survives

Also surviving are three daughters, Edna Roadcap and  Glenna Gill, both of Harrisonburg, VA, and Emily See of Waynesboro, VA; three sons, Willie Long, Willis Long and Gary Long, all of Dayton, VA; four sisters, Orpha Long of Cumberland, MD, Mabel Cooper of Hinton, VA,  Pauline Huffman of Onego, and Thelma Tingler of Bowden; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

A funeral service was conducted Wedensday at Johnson Funeral Service, Chapel, Bridgewater, VA, with Pastor W.L. (Sonny) Henkel officiating. Burial followed in the Rawley Springs Church Cemetery at Hinton, VA, with military grave rites by the American Legion Post # 27 at Dayton, VA.

Johnson Funeral Service Bridgesater, VA was in charge of funeral arrangements. 

Otis Hartman, 72, of Hightown, VA, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007.

He was born Sept. 5, 1935, in Franklin, a son of the late Earl and Mary Sponaugle Hartman.

Mr. Hartman was a retired logger and a past member of the Blue Grass Ruritan Club.

His wife of 49 years, Shirley Arlene Rexrode Hartman, survives.

Also surviving are three children, Karen Hartman of Hightown, VA, and Arlene Hull and friend, Jeff Phillips, and Belinda Dunkle and husband, Robert of Harrisonburg; five grandchildren, Chasity Wilson, Jamie Hull and Kristen, Tracy and Timmy Armstrong, four great-grandchildren, Isiah and Quintin Garland, Katilyn WIlson and Cayden Warner; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Charlotte Hartman of Springville, UT, and loy and Bobbie Hartman of Harrisonburg, VA; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy Kipp of Broadway, VA, Kate Mitchell, Lucy and Ron Kirk and Cornelia and Jake Teter, all of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Weldon Hartman. 

A funeral service was conducted Saturday,  at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA with the Rev. Andre Crummett and Elder David Hartman officiating.  Internment followed in Hightown Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's own choice.

Dr. Frederick Stanley Raines, 69, of Upper Tract passed away unexpectedly Sept. 24, 2007, as the result of an automobile accident in Upper Tract, W.Va.

He was born in Charleston, the son of the late Blake L. Raines and Anna Smith Raines.

Mr. Raines was a 1955 graduate of Charleston High School, Morris Harvey College and the WVU School of Medicine. He was employed by the Potomac Highland Guild in the field of psychiatry for Grant, Mineral, Hardy and Pendleton County.

His wife, Carmen Elena Bel,l survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Stephanie Lynn Raines of Denver, CO, and Patricia Elizabeth Raines of Washington, PA; a brother Charles R. Raines of Beaver; and two sisters, Betty Raines of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Beverly Raines of Dunbar.

Also preceding him in death was a sister, Ruth Price. 

Funeral services were held Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home, Charleston with Rev. Earl Cochran officiating.   Burial followed at the Leon Cemetery, Leon.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Living Faith Church with Pastor Steve Teter officiating.
