Coy Sponaugle, 93, of Circleville, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Sponaugle was born March 16, 1908 in Hunting Ground and was a son of the late Norman Sponaugle and Ardenie Bennett Sponaugle.

He retired from the U. S. Forestry Service and was a logger for Mark Nelson Sawmill. He was a member of the United Methodist church.

On Feb. 26, 1946, he married Eva Vint, who survives.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Oliver Sponaugle, Circleville; two brothers, John Sponaugle, Franklin, and Comie Sponaugle of Baxter, TN; and one grandchild, Glen Sponaugle.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Theodore and Kenny; and three sisters, Maziebelle Sponaugle, Hicel Hartman and Georgie Raines.

A graveside service was conducted by Rev. Earl Bible at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sponaugle fmaily cemetery in Circleville.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.

Virgil T. Simmons, 79, of Franklin, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Simmons was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Moyers and was a son of the late David Loy and Ollie Florence Smith Simmons.

He operated Simmons Grocery at Doe Hill, VA, for 19 years before retiring in 1966. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army. He was a member of the Friends Run Church of the Brethren where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of Sugar Grove V.F.W. Post 9666.

On Aug. 14, 1954, he married Hazel L. Ratliff Simmons, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Virgil Wayne Simmons, and David P. Simmons, both of Franklin; one sister, Bertha Johnson, Oakhill Nursing Home, Staunton, VA; and four grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Pastor Dan Ludwick conducted a funeral service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Friends Run Church of the Brethren. Burial followed in the Kline Cemetery at Kline.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Fire Department or the Franklin Rescue Squad.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Charles Daniel Miller, 89, of Pendleton Nursing Home, Franklin, died very peacefully in his sleep, Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Born Sept. 16, 1912, at Landes, he was a son of the late John Benjamin and Druzella Agnes (Bean) Miller.

He was first married to Beulah Hasley Simmons and became a loving father to six sons, one daughter and their families; Donald Len and dottie of Beltsville, MD; Jerry Byrd and James Richard (Jim) and Marilyn, all of Port Republic, VA; Charles Dennis and Pam of Broadway, VA; William Randall (bill), and Jeffrey Wayne and Shelley, alll of Harrisonburg, VA; and Carroll Ann Holloway and Wayne of Franklin. He was a very devoted grandfather to 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.

His second marriage was to Marie Young of Durbin and he was blessed with five step-children; bob, Polly, Joyce, Mary Frances and Bill, and a number of step-grandchildren, including "Buster" Varner.

He is also sruvived by one sister, Pearl Tate of Strasburg, VA.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline, dolly and Nola, and three brothers, John, George and Ray.

"Charlie Pap" or "Pap" as he was known to family and a multitude of friends, earned his reputation as a renowned sawyer in the area by performing his service for Pink Simmons, Don Goff, Gabe Judy, Clete Simmons, B.J. Auld, Max Ruddle, Mr. Whitehead, Layton Tharpe and Judy's Fencecraft. He was also the star sawyer for a business named for him, Charlie Pap's Lumber company, which is located in Franklin.

He served as deacon and elder of the Ruddle Presbyterian Church, where he was a clerk of the session for a number of years.

Being forced into early retirement at the approximate age of 85, he made visiting the hunting cabin on the mountain his life.

Before choosing to live at Pendleton Nursing Home (PNH), he made his home with his daughter, Carol and sons, Dennis and Jeff. He was lovingly cared for at PNH by great staff members and he had a lot of extra attention from one son, Jerry, granddaughters, Tara, Melanie and Ashley, and great-granddaughters, Kaylyn and Shaina.

He will be missed with great memories by a loving family and a lot of friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ruddle Presbyterian Church at Ruddle with the Revs. Jerry Smith and Shyrl Smith officiating.

Burial was in the Ruddle church cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Edward Allen Rexrode, 85, Moorefield, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg.

Mr. Rexrode was born Jan. 11, 1916, in Fort Seybert and was a son of the late Edward and Lucy (Blizzard) Rexrode.

He was a veteran of the US Army Air Force of World War II in the 10th Army, 7th Squadron, having served in India, China and Burma. He was a graduate of Franklin High School and Shepherd College in Shepherdstown. From 1935 to 1942, he taught grades one through eight at the Valley School in Fort Seybert, a one-room school attended by 27 students. After the war, he served as a teacher and administrator in the Pendleton county School system for 32 years, until his retirement in 1977. In the 1960s, he served on the committee for the south Branch Valley Watershed Project, which built a series of dams along the South Branch of the Potomac River for flood control. He moved to Moorefield in 1970. He was a member of the Sugar Grove VFW Post No. 9666, and a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Brandywine.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Hope (Turner) Rexrode; a son, Rex T. Rexrode, Culloden; two daughters, Ramona R. Goodwin, Chappaqua, NY, and Reagan R. Dryfoos, Leesburg, VA; two brothers, Ralph Marion Rexrode, Spencer; three sisters, Willia R. Fleming, Sylvia R. Brunk, and Shirley R. Spitzer, all of Harrisonburg, VA; and seven grandchildren.

The Rev. Terry Edwards conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Fraley Fuenral Home in Moorefield. Burial followed at the Olivet Cemtery where military graveside rites were accorded by the Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard.
