Earl Howard Eye

Earl Howard Eye, 87, of Franklin died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mr. Eye was born Feb. 17, 1917, in Deer Run and was the son of the late Wade Whitney Eye  and Etta Mae Dunkle Eye.

He was a farmer and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.  He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, the VFW and American Legion. 

His wife, Virginia Swecker Eye, survives. 

Also surviving are a daughter, Jean Andrews, and husband, Richard of Keezletown, VA; two sons, Dr. Earl "Butch" Eye, Jr., and wife, Marsha of Jacksonville, FL, and Neal Eye, and wife Jean of Frnaklin; two sisters, Sylvia Hartman of Charles Town and Jean Brunn of Coeur D'Alene, ID; a brother, Herbert Eye of Franklin; one grandson, Bradley Howard Eye; four step-granddaughters; and eight step-great-granddaughters. 

He was also preceded in death by one son, Steven Whitney Eye, on July 9, 1972, and one sister, Mary Eye Smith.

 The Rev. David Fisher conducted the funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mount Zion United Methodist Church.  Burial with military graveside rites by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin by Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squad or the Mount Zion United Methodist Church. 

Elizabeth Ritchie, 98

Elizabeth Sponaugle Judy Ritchie, 98, of Dayton, VA, died Monday morning, Sept. 27, 2004, at rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA. 

A daughter of the late Green and FAnnie Etona Bland Sponaugle, she was born on Feb. 12, 1907, in Ziegler, where she lived her early life and attended school. 

Mrs. Ritchie made her home in Dayton, VA, for the past 72 years, where she was a member o the Dayton Church of the Brethren and Circle No. 3 of the Church.  She had formerly been employed by Mid-Valley Hatchery. 

She was twice married.  In 1924, she married Joseph W. Judy, who preceded her in death on July 5, 1949. On Dec. 3, 1962, she married Foster P. Ritchie, who died in December 1983.

She is survived by two sons, Raeburn Judy of Dayton, VA, and Joseph Wreford Judy and wife, Leona, of Richmond, VA; two daughters, Ramona Crowe of Keezletown, VA, and Madeline Freeman of Dayton, Va; one step-daughter, Virginia May of Signers Glen, VA; three grandchildren, Susan Threewitts and husband, Bob, Barbara Judy and James Judy and wife, Nancy; three great-grandchildren, Kathryn Pusey and husband, Rya, Chris Threewitts; one sister, Rhea S. Simmons of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Lambert and Catherine Simmons, and four brothers, McClure, Glenn, George and William Sponaugle, and a stepson, Franklin Ritchie. 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Dayton Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Marty Doss officiating. Burial followed in the Dayton Cemetery in Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the S.P.C.A., the American Cancer Society, or the Dayton Church of the Brethren, in her memory.  

Darla A. Puffenbarger

Darla Annette Puffenbarger, 43, of Franklin, died Sept. 27, 2004, at her home. 

Born March 10, 1961, she was the daughter of the late Page and Betty Jo Smith Day. 

She was a homemaker and had worked 19 years at Hanover Shoe Company.  She was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church and a 1980 graduate of Franklin High School.   

Surviving are her husband, Carl William Puffenbarger, two step-daughters, Leona Bray of Flemington and Linda jackson of Bridgewater, Va; one son, Travis William Puffenbarger of Franklin; two brothers, Larry Allen Day of Woodbridge, VA, and Stephen Day of Franklin; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin with the Dr. Richard O. Young officiating.  Burial will be in the Day Family Cemetery.   

The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. 

Zane Gardner, 11 months

Zane Andrew Gardner, age 11 months, of Elkins died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at his home.  

He was the son of Heath Turner and Mary Gardner of Elkins. 

Surviving in addition to his parents are paternal grandparents, Brenda Turner of Cabins and Craig Turner of Onego; paternal great-grandmother, Margarette McLaughlin of Franklin, and paternal great-grandparents, Bill and Arvella Turner of Onego.  

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Runner Funeral Home, Elkins.  Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.  

The family received friends at the Runner Funeral Home, Elkins, after 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
