Arthur Thompson, 94 

Arthur Carlies Thompson, 94, of Elkins, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at Nella's Nursing Home in Elkins.  

Born Feb. 16, 1912, at Whitmer, he was the son of the late Thaddeus and Ethel Lambert Thompson.   

He retired from the forestry service and was a WWII army veteran. 

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Moats and Mary McCray, both of Moyers; two sons, James Thompson of Moyers and Arthur Thompson, of Franklin; two sisters, Marie Hedrick and Violet Thompson, both of Thornwood; two brothers, Jake Thompson of Durbin and Woodrow Thompson of Thornwood; four grandchildren, Elaine Arbogast, Joy Louise Wimer, Melissa Moats and Roger Allen Tingler; and two great-grandchildren, john Preston Moats and Karnea Dawn Moats.

He was also preceded in death by a grandson, John Preston Arbogast; three sisters, Macel Thompson, Ausiphine Rexrode and mabel Warner; and five brothers, Branson, Opie, Algie "Bud," Marvin and Doyrl Thompson.  

Graveside services were held Tuesday at the Lambert Cemetery, with Rev. William Vandevender officiating.   

William Benjamin Helmick, Sr., 87, a resident of Harrisonburg, VA, died at 12:20 Thursday afternoon, Sept. 21, 2006 at Oak Lea Nursing Home, Harrisonburg, VA..

A son of the late John Helmick, he was born on June 21, 1919 in Brandywine, but was a longtime resident of Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mr. Helmick was a driver for Shenandoah’s Pride prior to his retirement and was a member of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church.

He was twice married. Both wives, Virginia Helmick and Vallie Helmick, preceded him in death.

He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Jean Helmick; three grandchildren, Greg Helmick, Traci Vein and Sandy Thomas; four great-grandchildren, Heather Kolackovsky, Josh Kolackovsky, Nick Thomas and Emily Vein. 

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by a son, William Helmick, Jr.

Funeral services were held at at Muhlenberg Lutheran Church with Pastor Joe Vought and Pastor Dave Nelson officiating. Burial followed in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 Sunday evening at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home.

Mrs. Maxwell was born March 31, 1919, in Franklin and was the daughter of the late Walter Ray Thompson and Verna Kay Palmer Thompson.

She was a homemaker and was a Methodist.

Her husband, Alfred John Maxwell, preceded her in death in 1989.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Maxwell of Columbus, MI, and Terry Maxwell of Southfield, MI; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The Rev. Stanley Kile will conduct a graveside memorial service Saturday at the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by the Basagic Funeral Home.

She was born April 29, 1923, in Pendleton County, and was a daughter of the late Albert Floyd Moyers and Amanda Florence Sinnett Moyers.

She was a homemaker and worked as a cook at Sugar Grove Elementary School in the early years of her life.  Later, she worked at Hanover Shoe Company and the Pendleton Nursing Home.  She was a life member of  Our Five Boys VFW Auxiliary and a former Pendleton County Mother of the Year.  

Surviving are five sons, Nathan Propst of Brandywine, Burton and Gary Propst, both of Harrisonburg, VA, Bruce Propst of Frederick, MD, and Ricky Propst of Richmond, VA; an adopted son, Leland Propst of Franklin; two sisters, Anne Allen of Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA, and Sylvia Moyers of Mechanicsburg, PA; a brother, John Moyers of Middleburg Heights, OH; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several grand-dogs.

She was also preceded in death by the five b rothers, Albert, Herbert, Harvey, James and Harlan; and six sisters, LEah Moyers, Alice Pitsenbarger, Hazel Mullenax, Martha Arbogast, Julie Beaner and Myrtle Moyers. 

Her body was cremated. 

A memorial service was held Wednesday at Garber’s Church of the Brethren, Harrisonburg, VA. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Sallie Pauline (Puffenbarger) Crummett, 90, widow of Russell Flesher Crummett of Waynesboro, VA, died at 4:10 a.m. Sunday Sept. 24, 2006, in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, VA.

She was born Nov. 18, 1915, in Sugar Grove, a daughter of the late William Henry and Martha (Puffenbarger) Puffenbarger.

Mrs. Crummett was a homemaker and baby-sitter. 

She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her husband, who died Dec. 14, 2005, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Berlin Simmons and Emmett Puffenbarger, and a sister, Reda Puffenbarger.

Family members include two daughters and a son-in-law, Anna Hayes and Lois and Richard "Dick" Samples of Staunton, VA; a brother, Henry Glenn Puffenbarger of Sugar Grove; three grandchildren, Debbie Lynn (Hayes) Collins and her husband, Ronnie, of Hardy, VA, Douglas Scott Samples and his wife, Lisa, of Layton, UT, and Jeffrey Wayne Samples and his wife, Connie, of Stuarts Draft, VA; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Nicole Coffey and her husband, Derek, and Amber Brittany Samples, all of Stuarts Draft, VA; and two great-great-grandchildren, Raegan Nicole Coffey and Trenton Wayne Coffey; four sisters-in-law, Lena Puffenbarger, Thelma Crummett, Lura Smith, all of Bridgewater, VA, and Elvira Crummett of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, who died Dec. 14, 2005, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Berlin Simmons and Emmett Puffenbarger,; and a sister, Reda Puffenbarger.  

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday  in Bethany Presbyterian Church by the Revs. Robert R. von Oeyen Jr. and Otis L. Fisher. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2501 Fifth Street, Staunton, VA 24401.

Dr. C.F. Richter

Dr. Christian Frederick Richter, 91, a retired Baltimore County, MD, obstetrician and gynecologist who was an avid Civil War buff, died of leukemia Aug. 31, 2006, at Edenwald Retirement Community in Towson, MD. 

Dr. Richter, the son of the builder, was born in Baltimore, MD, and raised in Overlea, MD.  He was a 1932 graduate of Towson High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 1936.  He was a 1932 graduate of Towson High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 1936.   

After earning his medical degree from the university of Maryland Medical School in 1941, Dr. Richter worked for the U.S. Public Health Service in New Orleans, LA, during World War II.  

He returned to Baltimore, MD, after the war and established an OB/GYN practice in Towson, MD.  He retired in 1986.  

During his career, he once estimated that he had delivered more than 3,000 babies and cared for three generations of patients from the same families.  

As a serious student of the Civil War, DR. Richter had amassed a large library devoted to the subject.  He was a member of the Civil War Roundtable and a charter member of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, MD.

Dr. Richter liked sailing the Chesapeake Bay aboard "Ariescor," his classic 50-foot, Trumpy-built yacht.  He also was a world traveler and had visited Europe, China, Japan, and Australia. 

He was a master Mason and an active member of Boumi Temple, where he had been medical director.  He also was a member of the York and Scottish Rites and Royal Order of Jesters.  HE was a longtime member of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Baltimore, MD.  

In 1984, he married the former Corinne Eye of Franklin, who survives.  

Also surviving are a daughter, Charlotte O'Connor of Timonium, MD; a step-daughter Ann Harness Hodge of Portland, CT; a grandson; and three great-grandchildren.  

His marriage to the former Irene Dusch ended in divorce.  His second wife, Irma Ihre, died in 1982; and his son Christina Frederick Richter, III, died in 1998. 

A memorial service was held Sept. 9, at Ascension Evangelical Lutheran Church, Towson, MD.  

Mrs. Nelson was born May 2, 1927, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was a daughter of the late Frank Simmons and Verde Wenger Simmons.

She and her husband operated Warner’s Theatre and Warner’s Drive-in for 10 years. She was Methodist by faith.

On April 7, 1947, she married Granville Nelson, who survives.

She is also survived by a daughter, Judy Gordon of Cherry Grove; a son, Eric Nelson of Galiano Island, B.C., Canada; two sisters, Blanche Dean of Bridgewater, VA, and Beulah Payne of Harrisonburg, VA; a brother, Carl Simmons of Phoenix, AZ, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.

Anna Ruddle Cook, 96

Anna Ruddle Cook, 96, of Columbia, MD, died Sept. 20, 2006, at Vantage House in Columbia, MD, where she had resided since 1996. 

Born July 17, 1910, in Deer Run, she was the daughter of the late Issac Newton Rddle and Emily Susan Dahmer Ruddle. 

She attended the Mt. Clifton one-room school where her brother, Dick, was her teacher for two terms.  She graduated from Franklin High School and attended ST. Johns Academy in Petersburg.  She was a graduate of Cumberland, MD, Memorial School of Nursing, Class of 1933, and was a registered nurse. 

She was a member of St. Paul's Church of Frostburg, MD, and St. Martin's Lutheran Church of Annapolis, MD. 

In her failing years, her heart and mind were in Pendleton County. 

In 1935, she married Noel Speir Cook of Frostburg, MD, who was a delegate and then senator in the Maryland General Assembly from 1947 to 1970.  HE preceded her in death on April 23, 2001. 

Mrs. Cook was the last member of her immediate family.

She was "Aunt Ann" to 51 nieces and nephews of which 33 survive. 

She also was preceded in death by eight brothers, Claude, Whitney, Saylor, Roy, Newton, Decatur "Dick," John, Dee and Ralph; and by two sisters, Rita Ruddle Eye and Catherine Ruddle Propst.  

The Reverend Jens Bargmann of St. Martin's Lutheran Church conducted her service at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville, MD, where she was buried.
