Bertha M. Simpson
Bertha Marie Simpson, 67, of Sioux Lane in Franklin died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at her home.
Mrs. Simpson was born May 30, 1940, in Gloucester, VA, and was a daughter of the late George Burns and Fleda Hudgins Burns.
She was a home health-care provider and was a member of Wayside Baptist Church. She graduated from Danville High School and Richmond School of Cosmetology.
Her husband, Charles Henry Simpson, preceded her in death Feb. 24, 2005.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Wood of Grottoes, VA; three sons, Charles King of Franklin, Albert King of Broadway, VA, and Roy King of Grottoes, VA; a half sister, Virginia Kerr of Elkins; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Joe King; and one daughter, Debbie Ratcliff.
Pastor Daryl D. Ritchie conducted the funeral Monday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Sheldon L. Hedrick
Sheldon Lester Hedrick, 87, of Baltimore, MD, passed away on Sept. 19, 2007, at St. Joseph Hospital, Towson, MD, after a brief illness.
Mr. Hedrick was born March 5, 1920, in Seneca Rocks and was a son of the late Charles Glen Hammer Hedrick and Myrtle Raines Hedrick.
He retired from General Motors, where he worked in the Fisher Body Division as assembly line relief man. HE was a member of the Presbyterian church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Sams Hedrick of Williamstown; three daughters, Carol Sue Hafner and husband, Fred of Glen Arm, MD, Janet Lee Rushing and husband, Gene of King George, VA, and Kimberly Shook and husband, Patrick of Williamstown; two sisters, Mildred Nelson of Laurel, MD, and Gae Mullenax of Cherry Grove; a brother, Blake Hedrick of Seneca Rocks; seven grandchildren, Tony May, Terry May, Kristin Hafner Wenderoth and Craig Hafner, all of Baltimore, MD, Dena Garrett of Waldorf, MD, and Sean and Ashley Chicester of Williamstown and four great-grandchildren.

Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Ida Florence Moyers
Ida Florence Moyers, 90, of Sugar Grove died Sept. 21, 2007, at Valley Medical Hospital, Kent, WA, of a stroke and other complications.
Mrs. Moyers was born Oct. 31, 1916, at Moyers and was the youngest daughter of the late Kennie Propst and Sarah Virginia (Mitchell) Propst.
She received her elementary education in a one-room schoolhouse at Pitsenbarger and her high school education at Bridgewater High School, Bridgewater, VA. She received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, in 1939. She was a teacher in a one-room school for two years, taught grades one and two at Sugar Grove Grade School for 23 years and taught 15 years at Brandywine Grade School. IN 1986, she retired after teaching 40 years.
She was married to Harvey Floyd Moyers on Sept. 25, 1943. He preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1989.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Jim Schulz of Kent, WA, and Vicki and Roman Grypa of North East, MD; four grandchidlren, Any Grypa of Newark, DE, Tim Grypa of North East, MD, and Danielle and Ashley Schulz of Kent, WA; 18 nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and relatives.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church, Brandywine with Pastors Brianna Richardson and Ted Schulz officiating. Burial will be at the Sugar Grove Cemetery, Sugar Grove.
A viewing will be held on Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Brandywine, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

W. Paul Mitchell, 93
W. Paul Mitchell, 93, of Bridgewater, VA, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at the Bridgewater Home, Bridgewater, VA.
Mr. Mitchell was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Sugar Grove and was a son of the late James Harvey and Nadie Florence Wilfong Mitchell.
He was a salesman for Flowers Bakery and was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, Dayton, VA.
On June 29, 1940, he married Delsie Charlotte Propst, who preceded him in death Aug. 15, 2000.
Survivors include a brother, Curtis Mitchell of Woodbridge, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Theodore Schulz conducted a graveside service Thursday at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, VA.

Stern McDonald, 94
Stern L. McDonald, 94, of Levels went to be with his heavenly father on Tuesday Sept. 18, 2007, in Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD.
Born on May 10, 1913 in Riverton, he was the son of the late Job E. and Amanda (Rexroad) McDonald.
He was retired from the WV Dept. of Highways and a farmer. He was a member of the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren and a previous member of the Springfield Assembly of God Church.
His wife Jacquelin (Harper) McDonald, survives.
Also surviving are a son, Dewey R. McDonald and wife, Lena of Keyser; a daughter, Dotsie N. Beckman and husband, Rogers of Levels; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Teddy Lincoln McDonald, Peter Paul McDonald; two sisters; and six brothers.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, Levels, with Pastor Robert Combs and Pastor John Thomas officiating. Interment was in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Levels.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the McKee Funeral Home, Romney.
Betty Ruth Young, 68
Betty Ruth Young (nee Casto), 68, of Temple Hills, MD, went to rejoin her heavenly Father on Sept. 14, 2007. She passed away Suddenly at her daughters' home in North Carolina after a long illness.
Mrs. Young grew up in Circleville and graduated from Circleville High School in 1957. She had a distinguished and enjoyable career as a mother and homemaker, where she raised her three children. She cherished many long lasting friendships throughout her life and was a faithful and devoted member of the Clinton Christian Assembly. She also enjoyed babysitting.
Her loving husband of 40 years, Ralph Young, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Scott Young and wife, Denise; two daughters, Debbie Branham and husband, Billy, and Patti Foster, five little "angels" grandchildren, David, Christina, Michael, Nicholas and Tristan; five brothers, Jack, James, CArl, Marlin and GErald; and a sister, Dorothy.
She also was preceded in death by a sister, Irene; and two brothers, Donald and Roger.
Funeral services were held Friday at the Lee Funeral Home, Clinton, MD. She was laid to rest beside her beloved hsuband after a graveside memorial service at National Memorial Park, Falls Church, VA.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to a Hospice care facility of one's choice.
Edith Holloway, 87
Edith S. Holloway, 87, of Upper Tract died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
Mrs. Holloway was born Sept. 30, 1919, in Smoke Hole and was a daughter of the late Andy Alt and Edna KEtterman Alt.
She was a homemaker and attended teh Upper Tract United Methodist Church.
On July 24, 1946, she married Robert H. Holloway, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mildred Propst and husband, Max of Franklin; two sons, Wayne R. Holloway and wife, Carol of Franklin, and Craig D. Holloway and wife, Theresa of Upper Tract; three sisters, Ruth Helmick of Martinsburg, Minnie Stump of Gerrardstown and Mary Ann Miller of Gainesville, VA; two brothers, Charles Alt and Harlan Alt, both of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by seven brothers.
The Rev. Ed Null conducted the funeral Monday at Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.
Memorial donations may be made to the Grant County Nursing Home or the Upper Tract Rescue Squad.
