Roy Edward Hartman

Roy Edward Hartman, 82, of Circleville passed away on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.

Mr. Hartman was born in Cherry Grove on May 20, 1927, son of the late Dennie Herman Hartman and Myrtle Annie Mullenax Judy and stepson of the late Virgie Hartman Bennett.

He was a member of the North Dry Run United Methodist Church on Snowy Mountain Road.  He loved hunting, fishing and trapping.

Surviving are three sisters, Myrtle Yvonne Shriver, Cherry Grove, Ruth Warner, Franklin, and Dorothy Lantz, Penn Laird, VA; two brothers, Martin Dale Judy, Knoxville, IL, and Delano Hartman, Timberville, VA. 

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Delano Judy and Jennings Hartman; and four sisters, Alma Eye, Maxine Campbell, Carrie Judy and Glenna Ruddle.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Elder David Hartman officiating.

Alan Verdie Lehman

Alan Verdie Lehman, 81, of Charlotte Hall, MD, and formerly of Franklin, died Sept. 18, 2009, at his home.

Born Sept. 10, 1928, in Wilkinsburg, PA, he was the son of the late Harry and Evelyn Lepley Lehman.

Mr. Lehman was a retired civil engineer with the United States Air Force for 25 years.  He was a member of the Potomac Highlands Shrine Club of Osiris Temple and a member of the Masonic-Valley Lodge #613 and the American Legion Post in La Plata, MD.  He loved hunting, traveling, ancient and military history of which he was a proud veteran having served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.  He enjoyed being with his grandchildren.

His wife, Dolores Curtin Lehman, survives.

Also surviving are one son, Richard K. Lehman, and wife, Cheryl of Charlotte Hall, MD; and four grandchildren, Kyle, Westin, Cara and Richard Lehman.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria Franks and Shirley Lehman.

Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Chapel, La Plata, MD, with Rev. Mark Roberson officiating.  Interment will be in Maryland Veterans’ Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.

Richard A. “Rick” Landis

Richard A. “Rick” Landis, 38, of Glen Burnie, MD, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 11, 1971, at Baltimore, MD, and was the son of Richard and Phyllisann Landis of Severn, MD.

He was a 1989 graduate of Old Mill High School and had received his certificate in law enforcement from Anne Arundel Community College.  He was a Nationally Certified Firefighter and EMT and had served in Tal Afar, Iraq, as a firefighter for the Department of Defense.  He was a member of the Glen Burnie Volunteer Fire Dept. and TRAC (Triumph Club).

He was a WWII collector and loved Triumph cars, antiquing, gardening, woodworking and being an all around handyman.

His wife, Regina S. Landis, survives.

Also surviving are paternal grandparents, Andrew Landis of Keyser and Mamie E. and William M. Borror of Ft. Ashby; a brother, Dwayne Scott Landis of Severn, MD; three sisters, Katherine St. Germaine of Arkansas, Anita Disney of Severn, MD, and Tammy Littleton of Pasadena, MD.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Illie and Stradie Virginia Kimble.

Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at the Ruddle Presbyterian Church at Ruddle with Rev. Stanley Kile officiating.  Burial will be at the Ruddle Church Cemetery.

Mayselle Grunawalt, 77

Mayselle Getz Grunawalt, 77, of Ahoskie, NC, died, Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Grunawalt was born on Feb. 10, 1932, in Rockingham County, VA, a daughter of the late Glenn and Ruby Sites Getz.

She was a retired factory worker.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Berniece Varner of Brandywine, Janet Leary of South Mills, NC, and Paula Armstrong of Ahoskie, NC; her sons, Steven George of Corpus Christi, TX, Marvin George of Harrisonburg, VA, Allen Grunawalt of Bridgewater, VA, and Michael Grunawalt of Suffolk, VA; a sister, Velma Brennamon of Pennsylvania; a brother, Willard Getz of Arizona; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Allene Williams, 90

Allene Hoover Williams, 90, of Falls Church, VA, died on Sept. 19, 2009, at her home.

She was born on March 9, 1919, in Sugar Grove to the late George M. Hoover and Louella Simmons Hoover.

Her husband, Paul T. Williams, Sr., preceded her in death.

Surviving are four sons, Paul T. Williams, Jr., Gary W. Williams, and his wife, Linda, Donald R. Williams, and his wife, Micki, and Thomas H. Williams.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Culpepper VA.

Katherine DePoy, 69

Katherine “Kittle” Anderson DePoy, 69, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away on Thursday Sept. 17, 2009, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. DePoy was born on Dec. 14, 1939, in Franklin and was the daughter of the late William and Evelyn Dolly Anderson.

She attended the University of Kentucky and James Madison University and graduated from the Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, DC.  She was a homemaker in her children’s early years and then assisted in her husband’s development and law offices, as well as managed numerous rental properties locally.

Mrs. DePoy was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Eastern Star and the Harrisonburg City School Board.  She also played Bridge weekly with the “Uptown Bridge Club” for 48 years.  This group of wonderful ladies held a special place in her heart.

On June 5, 1958, she married Jack F. DePoy, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kathie DePoy Brandt, and husband, Randy of Fishersville, VA, and their children, Katherine and Elizabeth, Ellen DePoy-Golden and husband, Craig of Stephens City, VA, and their children, Grant and Bryce; three sons, J.C. DePoy and wife, Anne, and their children, Mitch, Emily and Addie, Andy DePoy and wife, Amy, and their children Hannah and Carter, all of Harrisonburg, VA, and Bobby Rowe and wife, Karen of Bridgewater, VA, and their children, Eric, Kyle and Jessica; one brother, William Dyer Anderson, and wife, Anne of Annandale, VA; one niece; and one nephew.

A celebration of life service was held Saturday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA, with the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Long officiating.

Kathryn H. Ganoe, 77

Kathryn H. Ganoe, 77, of Romney passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at her home.

Born on April 15, 1932 in Simoda, she was the daughter of the late George I. and Irma S. (Mallow) Harper.

She was a self-employed hairdresser.  She was a charter member of the Romney Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary, a member of the Romney Presbyterian Church and a graduate of the Circleville High School Class of 1950.

Her husband, Paul Dailey Ganoe, preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 2007,

Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Ganoe and Kim Crouse and husband, Terry all of Romney; two grandsons, Craig Crouse and Matt Crouse, both of Romney; a sister, Myrtle Bobo and husband, Karl of Lahmansville; a special nephew, Don VanDevander of Riverton; special K-9 companion, Jake; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary VanDevander, and a great-nephew, Tim Wimer.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, with Rev. Barbara R. Johnson officiating.  Interment followed in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.

Erwin Bussard, 90 

Erwin Lewis Bussard, 90, of Monterey, VA, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at Bath Community Hospital.

He was born July 7, 1919, at Bolar, VA, a son of the late Raymond Earl and Cora Elizabeth (Caricofe) Bussard.

On April 6, 1947, he married Lorraine Elizabeth Simmons, who preceded him in death.

After graduation from Monterey High School, Monterey, VA, in 1940, he entered the U.S. Civilian Public Service, doing community work in different states.  He returned to farming in Highland County, VA, in 1945.  He had also driven a delivery truck for Shenandoah Pride, had worked at the Bath County Pumped Storage Project and for the U.S. Forestry Service in Bartow.

Surviving are three daughters, Betty Tracy of Arbovale, Janet Hunt and Lois White, both of Monterey, VA; a son, Raymond Allen Bussard of Franklin; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vesta Ruckman of Bolar, VA.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Russell Lewis and Donnie Glen Bussard.

A funeral service was conducted Wednesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, with Pastor Chip Hill and Dr. Daniel Freed officiating.  Burial was at Blue Grass Cemetery, Blue Grass, VA.
