Herald Williams, 80

Herald Williams, 80, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at his home. 

Mr. Williams was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Fort Seybert and was the son of the late Robert and Hulda Eye Williams.

Herald was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Herald participated in the World War II cleanup efforts towards the end of the war and later moved to Harrisonburg, VA, where he was a warehouse manager for Gordon's Potato Chips. He was employed in the accounting departments at Dunham-Bush and Wharton Aldhizer & Weaver PLC. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. Herald enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing and collecting coins.

On Oct. 20, 1948, he married Thelma Virginia Williams, who survives. 

Also surviving are a daughter, Joyce W. Kuhns and husband, Jim of Harrisonburg, VA; a grandson, Andrew G. Hedrick and wife, Stephanie of Statesville, NC; a great-granddaughter, Gillian Hedrick of Statesville, VA; two nieces; and two nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg, VA, with Pastors Edward Fleming and Mark Keller officiating. Burial followed at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine.

Sharon A. Evick

Sharon Aline Garber Evick, 63, of Franklin died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Evick was born Jan. 29, 1945, in Staunton, VA, and was a daughter of the late John Lawrence Garber and Martha Jarman Wilberger Garber.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church in Verona, VA. She graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1962 and was a member of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary No. 6454.

On June 20, 1964, she married Buddy Lee, who survives.

She is also survived by a son, Fred Lawrence Evick and wife, Donna of Franklin; a sister, Josephine Layman and husband, Byard of New Hope, VA; two brothers, John L. Garber Jr. and wife, Audrey of Staunton, VA, and William Henry Garber and wife, Lavonne of Maurertown, VA; and two grandchildren, Sheldon and Jessica Evick.

Pastor Brad Mitchell will conduct the funeral today at 11 a.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be at Evick Cemetery, Dickenson Mountain, Franklin.

Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Helen A. Moats, 87

Helen Audrey Moats, 87, of Monterey, VA, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at Bath Community Hospital.

She was born July 23, 1921, in Vanderpool, VA, a daughter of the late Arthur M. and Lydia Ellen (Jones) Simmons.

On Feb. 9, 1946, she married William Virgil “Jake” Moats, who preceded her in death May 10, 1994.

Mrs. Moats was a homemaker and a familiar face at Jerry's Electornics.  She loved children and for many years did babysitting in her home. She was a member of the Monterey Presbyterian Church.

She survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Dale Simmons of Monterey, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Melody Moats, of Monterey, VA; a sister-in-law, Crystal Simmons of Bridgewater, VA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by two brohters, James and Melvin Simmons; and four sisters, Evelyn Moats, Emma Botkin, Margie Simmons and Margaret Gum.  

Afuneral service was conducted SAturday at the Monterey Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Melissa Harmon, C. William “Bill” Cox and Lester LaPrade officiating.  Burial was in the Monterey Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA.  

Ollie K. Warner Johnston 

Ollie Kerlin Warner Johnston, 93, of Arbovale, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the home of her daughter, surrounded with her family. 

Born March 1, 1914, at Cherry Grove, she was a daughter of the late Charlie N. and Mary E. Wimer Warner.  

She was a homemaker and was a member of Kerr Chapel. 

Her husband, Cletis Johnston, preceded her in death in 1993. 

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Rexrode and husband, Jim of Durbin; a son, Buford Johnston and wife, Patricia of Arbovale; a sister, Priscilla Mullenax and husband, Brooks of Cherry Grove; four brothers, Ray Warner and wife, Nola of Riverton, Charlie Warner and wife, Betty of Circleville, Merle "Buck" Warner and wife, Carolyn of Seneca Rocks, and Paul Warner and wife, Pauline of Cleveland, OH; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. 

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Sponaugle; three btohters, Arlie Warner, Roy Warner and DeWitt Warner; and a great-grandson, Brian Vandevander.  

Funeral services will be held today at 3:00 p.m. at Durbin Church of the Brethren with Rev. David Rittenhouse and Rev.  William C. Vandevender officiating.  Burial will follow in the Arbovale Cemetery.  Friends were received on Wednesday from 6t:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Durbin Church of the Brethren.   

Cornelia Virginia Moore

Cornelia Virginia Moore, 55, of McGaheysville, VA, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Moore was born Oct. 21, 1952, in Harpers Ferry and was the daughter of the late Rev. Boyd W. Moats and the late Hazel Moats-Cubbage.

She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She had been employed at Hanover Shoe Co., Metro Pants Co., in Harrisonburg, VA, McDonalds and more recently at Marshall's in Bridgewater, VA.

On March 27, 1977, she married Gary W. Moore of McGaheysville, VA, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kelli L. Smith of Richmond, VA, and Carrie C. Moore of McGaheysville, VA; six brothers, Allen Moats Sr., Boyd Moats and Frank MOats, all of Moatstown, David Moats of Port Republic, VA, Bobby Moats of Crimora, VA, and Ricky Moats of Grottoes, VA; seven sisters, Della Mae Redman of Franklin, Arlene Williams of Stuarts Draft, VA, Darlene Barrow of Moatstown, Dorothea Nelson of Fishersville, VA, Linda Woodson of Waynesboro, VA, Genevieve Mitchell of Killeen, TX, and Karen Juarez of Mount Jackson, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Revs. David Jones, Guy Wood and Sam Barrow conducted the funeral Saturday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg, VA. Burial was in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
