Audrey Hartman, 79

Audrey Jean Hartman, 79, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Hartman was born on Aug. 27, 1930,  in Rockingham County, VA, and was the daughter of the late Lynward and Ruth Wampler Stultz.

She was a homemaker, who enjoyed canning and gardening.  She was a devoted wife and mother.

On June 21, 1948, she married Wayne Hartman, formly of Reeds Creek, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Virginia A. Birt and husband, Jesse G., of San Antonio, TX, Patricia Turner and husband, Richard, and Nina Reedy, all of Harrisonburg, VA; two sons, Michael Hartman and wife, Sandy, of Harrisonburg, VA, and David Hartman and wife Carol “C. J.” of Mount Solon, VA; one sister, Anna Prater of Harrisonburg, VA; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, William, Donald and Carl Hartman; and a son-in-law, Terry Reedy.

Pastor Bob Talbott conducted a funeral service Thursday at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, Harrisonburg, VA.  Burial followed at Singers Glen Cemetery.

John Anthony Herb

John Anthony Herb, 68, of Upper Tract passed away at his residence on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009.

Mr. Herb was born in Baltimore, MD, on June 17, 1941, the son of the late Andrew Oscar and Catherine Elizabeth Nichols Herb.

He retired as a chemical operator at S. T. Services and was a Catholic.

His wife, Donna Marie Vance of Upper Tract, survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Terri Marie Hall and husband, Chris of Sugar Grove; two sons, Anthony “Bunky” John Herb of Upper Tract and Frederick Andrew Herb and wife, Elizabeth of Franklin; a sister, Patricia Herb of Anne Arundle County, MD; four brothers, Ronald Herb, Charles Herb, Robert Herb, all of Brooklyn Park, MD, and George Herb of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren, Kacie Herb, Courtney Herb, John Andrew Herb, Jade Jannell Herb and Whitney Hall; and one great-great-grandchild, Natalya Herb.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Andrew and James.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Father Mario R. Claro officiating.  Interment was in the Cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract.

Josephine Sandra Proffitt

Josephine Sandra “Jo” Proffitt, 66, of Falls Church, VA, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at her residence.

Born in Smoke Hole, on May 3, 1943, she was the daughter of Vada Judy Shreve of Petersburg the late Harman Shreve.

Miss Proffitt was a waitress at JV’s Restaurant in Falls Church, VA, and she attended Pendleton County Schools.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are two daughters, Carolyn Alt-Redish, Burke, VA, and Bobbi Jo Flores, Front Royal, VA; three sons, Johnny E. Dice, Falls Church, VA, Gerald Alt, Conomingo, MD, and Timothy Alt, Charleston; four sisters, Geraldine Dwyer, Alexandria, VA, Maxine Kancler, Petersburg, Nancy LaMaster, Upper Tract, and Marsha Carpenter, Falls Church, VA; three brothers, Otha Keith Shreve, Orlando, FL, Ronnie Shreve, Franklin, and Dennis Shreve, Maysville; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Victoria Sue Stump.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept., 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg. 

Ruth Gruber, 69

Ruth Virginia Gruber, 69, of Ashburn, VA, died on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009 in Ashburn, VA.

She was born March 24, 1940, in Smoke Hole and was the daughter of the late George Vernon and Minnie Judy Shreve.

She moved to Sterling, VA, in 1977 and began her career as a realtor with Dulles Properties in Sterling, VA.

Surviving are six beloved children, Todd Mowery and Karl Mowery, both of Circleville, Tracy Mowery of Manassas, VA, Beth Mowery Dunn of Leesburg, VA, Becky Helms of Denver, CO, and Allen Gruber of Sterling, VA; one brother, Alonzo Shreve of Smoke Hole; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at St. George’s Log Church in Smoke Hole.  Interment will follow in the Shreve Family Cemetery, Smoke Hole.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Lung Association of Northern Virginia, 9221 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, VA 23235.

Welby A. “JR” Marsh, Jr.

Welby A. “JR” Marsh, Jr., 73, Charles Town and formerly of Brandywine, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Marsh was born in Washington, DC, on March 1, 1936, the son of the late Welby Adolph Marsh, Sr. and Belle Eleanor Hutchison Marsh.

He retired as a sanitation engineer for Peer’s Sanitation in Brandywine and was a Catholic.

His wife, Mary Ann Louise Parker, preceded him  in death of Sept. 4, 1007.

Surviving are six daughters, Cheryl Johnson and husband Tim of Brandywine, Donna Long and husband, Rich of Rawley Springs, VA, Teresa Shanholtz and companion, Paul Wallander of Bridgewater, VA, Robbin Spalding and husband, Richard of Charles Town, Tina Houser and husband, Steve of Shepherdstown, and Wendy Marsh and companion, John Roberts, Jr., of Brandywine; a step-daughter, Victoria Schweigert and husband, Greg of New Berry Park, CA; one brother, Edward Marsh of Mechanicsville, MD; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Zoe Barker; a brother, Butch Clarkson; and a sister, Jo Ann Marsh.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Father Mario R. Claro officiating.  Interment was in Pine Hill Cemetery, Brandywine.

Memorials may be made to Panhandle Home Health Industries or Pendleton Senior and Family Services, Franklin.

Leah W. Murphy, 89

Leah W. Murphy of Hampton, VA, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at the age of 89.

A native of Cherry Grove, she resided in Hampton, VA, for 67 years.  She worked as a clerk, but for most of her life was a homemaker.  She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Her husband, Marlin Murphy, preceded her in death.

Surviving are a son, Gary Murphy and his wife, Patricia of Lanexa, VA; a daughter, Karen Banks of Hampton, VA; three sisters, Marie Reavis, Grace May and Thelma Fellows; grandchildren, Stephanie Rollins, Shay Edwards and Mary and Robert Murphy; and five great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Marty Banks; three brothers, Raymond, Ted and Cecil Waybright; and two sisters, Claris Bliss and Reva Vernon.

Graveside services were held at Friday in Peninsula Memorial Park with the Rev. Joe Hunt officiating.

Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport-News, VA, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
