June Headley 

June Headley, sister of Jean Thompson of Oak Flat, died Aug. 4, 2006, after a courageous 10-month battle with cancer. 

A native of Ohio, Mrs. Headley was 64 years old and resided in Martins Ferry, OH.

Mrs. Headley loved to come to Pendleton County and was a frequent visitor at her sister's home.  She enjoyed helping in the Thompson' turkey houses, going to square dances and playing cards with friends and neighbors of her sister and brother-in-law, Oden.  she will be remembered a sadly missed by all who knew her. 

Surviving are her husband, Don, two sons, two sisters, a brother, six grandchildren and numerous nephews. 

Samuel S. Byrd, 88

Samuel S. Byrd, 88, of Martinsburg died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at the VA Medical Center.  

Born July 17, 1918, in Franklin, he was the son of the late Otha D. Byrd and Etta Sile byrd. 

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army and was awarded two purple heart medals.  He was the owner and operator of Byrd's Grocery Store from 1945 to 1984.  

Mr. Byrd was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. 

His wife, Lucy Tenore Byrd, preceded him in death. 

he is survived by two sons, Richard L. "Ricky" Byrd and wife, Debra of Petersburg, and Robert w. "Buddy" Byrd, Sr., and wife Patricia of Hedgesville; two grandsons, R.W. and Patrick Byrd; one step-granddaughter, Michelle Johnson; one brother, Walter E. Byrd of Martisnburg, a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his companion of a number of years, Freda Mills. 

He also was preceded in death by a sister, Imogene Byrd Crim; a brother, Woodrow "Woody" Byrd; and an infant brother. 

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with Father Jovencio Ilano officiating.  Interment followed At Rosedale Cemetery with military graveside services.  

Myrtle Moyers, 86

Myrlte Moyers, 85, of Milton, PA, died Aug. 8, 2006 at Kramm Healthcare Center, where she had been a resident since November, 2003. 

Born in Pendleton County on Jan. 1, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Albert Floyd Moyers and Amanda Florence Sinnett Moyers. 

She retired from JC Penney in Lancaster, PA, in October of 1984.  Prior to living in Milton, PA, she had resided in Mechanicsburg, PA, and at the Woodland center for Nursing in Lewisberry, PA. 

She was a member of the Shiremanstown United Methodist church, Shiremanstown, PA. 

surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Lou Moyers of Middleburg Heights, OH; one sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Richard Allen of Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA; two sisters Sylvia Moyers of Mechanicsburg, PA and Retha Propst of Harrisonburg, VA; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Albert, Herbert, Harvey, James and Harlan, and five sisters, Leah Moyers, Alice Pitsenbarger, Hazel Mullenax, Martha Arbogast and Julia Beaner. 

A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, PA, with her nephew-in-law, the Rev. Michael A. Druck, pastor of St. Andrew's United Methodist church, Milton, PA, officiating.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer society, North Central Region, 1948 E. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701. 

Arrangements were handled by the Shaw Funeral Home in Milton, PA, and the Neill Funeral Home in Camp Hill, PA.
