Edna (Lough) Simmons, 95, of Staunton, VA, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Augusta Nursing and Rehab Center, Fishersville, VA. 

She was born March 22, 1913 in Deer Run, a daughter of the late B. J. and Emeline (Kesner) Lough.

Her husband, Raymond Lee Simmons, died Agu. 16, 1986. 

Surviving are two daughters, Jo Ann Adams of Barren Ridge, VA, and Bonnye Thompson of Roanoke, VA; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. 

She was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. 

A funeral service was conducted Thursday at the Henry Funeral Home Chapel, Staunton, VA.  Burial followed in Augusta Memorial Park.

Hazel M. Rexrode, 84

Hazel Marie Rexrode, 84, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, in the emergency room at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. She was a resident at Avante at Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Rexrode was born April 21, 1924, in Pendleton County and was the daughter of the late Charles and Ida Kesner Mitchell Sr.

She was a member of Mill Creek Church of the Brethren. She was a retired member of the housekeeping staff and worked in the laundry at Madison College, now James Madison University.

On April 12, 1958, she married Roy Lee Rexrode, who preceded her in death Oct. 4, 1991.

She is survived by two brothers, Charles Mitchell Jr. of Franklin and Stanley Mitchell of Port Republic, VA, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The Rev. A. Lee Kinsey conducted the funeral Saturday at the Kyger-Pence Funeral Home near McGaheysville, VA.

Nancy Lee Salts

Nancy Lee Salts, 62, of Picayune, MS, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. VA.

Mrs. Salts was born Nov. 19, 1945, in Deer Run and was a daughter of Neva Arvella Mitchell Rexrode of Franklin and the late Ralph A. Rexrode, who died Feb. 4, 2008.

She was a retired registered nurse, having worked in Maryland, Florida, Iowa and Nebraska. She was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church in Carriere, MS.

She graduated from Franklin High School in 1963 and as valedictorian from Florida Keys Community College in 1980. 

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend to so many people. She was a registered nurse and touched more lives than we will ever know, always giving to others her special gift. Since her husband, "Pat", was in the Navy, their family traveled all over the world, but when she went to be with the Lord, she came home to West Virginia.

Though we may not always understand, we know "God has the perfect plan."

On April 20, 1973, she married Rodney Jay "Pat" Salts, who survives of Picayune, MS.

In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by a daughter, Angela Sue Faia and husband, Brent Andrew, of Picayune, MS; a son, Jason Lawrence Salts and wife, Carey Jeanne, of De Moines, IA; a sister, Diana Sue Pennybacker and husband Bill of Franklin; a brother, Eldon Ralph Rexrode and wife, Sheila of Franklin; and four grandchildren, Justin Faia, Nathan Salts, Hannah Salts and Amy Salts.

Pastor Jerry Smith conducted a memorial service Wednesday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  A memorial service will be held in Picayune, MS at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squad.

Jeffery L. Simmons

Jeffery Lane Simmons, 47, of Franklin died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Simmons was born Aug. 10, 1961, in Sandy Ridge, and was a son of the late Robert Simmons and Tressie Varner Simmons and foster son of Mary Snyder Warner.

He graduated from Franklin High School. He was employed at the Hanover Shoe Co. for 18 years and at CMI Corp. in Franklin for three years.

His wife, Ruby G. Lambert Simmons, whom he married June 6, 1986, survives.  

Also surviving are a daughter, Mandy Nicole Simmons of Franklin; a son, Jonathan Lane Simmons and fiance, Elizabeth Harper of Franklin; three sisters, Patsy Smith and husband, Earl of Franklin, Carolyn Simmons of Fairmont and Linda Higgins of Delray Beach, FL; a brother, Roger Simmons of Harrisonburg, VA; a granddaughter, LIndsay Anna-Gail Simmons; and several nieces and nephews.

Pastor Brad Mitchell conducted the funeral Monday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Doris Elaine Craig, 75, of Franklin died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Craig was born July 16, 1933, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was the daughter of the late Robert Allen Eye and Jessie Magnolia Guyer Eye.

She graduated from Franklin High School in 1951 and graduated from Bridgewater College. She retired in 1995 as a schoolteacher from Franklin High School, where she taught English and home economics. She was a member of Franklin United Methodist Church, where she was church organist.

Her husband, Stanley Lewis Craig, preceded her in death Jan. 18, 2007.

Survivors include two daughters, Doris Ann Dove and husband, Larry of Upper Tract, and Mary Beth Lambert and husband, Mark of Franklin; and five grandchildren, Clifton Russell Dove, Beth Lynn Dove, Jesse Caleb Lambert, Jacob Harrison Lambert and Jared Allen Lambert. .

Pastors Robert Anderson and Susie Echols conducted the funeral Wednesday at Franklin United Methodist Church. Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Franklin United Methodist Church or Pendleton Manor.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin. 

Rebecca Rachel Beecham, 53, of Franklin died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at her residence.

Mrs. Beecham was a daughter of Shirley Booth of Greensboro, NC, and the late Franklin Booth.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Michelle Shaver of Franklin; a son, Thomas McDowell; a son, Charlie and Beth McDowell of Edmond, OK; a sister; two brothers; and two granddaughters; and one grandson.

The funeral was held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Rocky Knoll Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC. Burial was at Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro, NC.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 727, Franklin, WV 26807.

Local arrangements were handled by Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Blanche Barr

 Blanche Barr, 77, died Aug. 31, 2008, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Doug Ketterman.

Mrs. Barr was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Kessel and was a daughter of the late Glen Huffman Barr and Delena Simmons Barr. 

She and her husband owned and operated Barr’s Texaco/Citgo in Petersburg for over 30 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Petersburg.

Her husband of 58 years, Donald E. Barr, survives. 

Also surviving are a son, Donnie Glen Barr and wife, Teresa Engle Barr of Petersburg; three daughters, Judy Barr Brushaber of Concord, VA, Sharon Barr Ketterman and husband, of Petersburg, and Wanda Barr Cayton and husband, Mickey of Franklin; three sisters, Margel Barr Cain of Dunbar, Jean Barr Swick of Petersburg, and Louella Barr Beeler of Strasburg, VA; eight grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Elma Barr Wilson.

The Rev. Dr. James A. Ash conducted the funeral Wednesday at Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, Moorefield. Burial followed in Walnut Grove Gardens in Moorefield.

Anna Lee Calloway, 70

Anna Lee  (Eckard-Armstrong) Calloway was born Sept. 12, 1937, in Sugar Grove, later raising her family in Bridgewater, VA. 

Though Anna grew up in Sugar Grove and has done much travel and lived in many areas, to hear her speak of “home,” it remained the Bridgewater, VA, area. Though her last known residence was Spartanburg, SC, during a visit “home” on Nov. 2, 2003, Mrs. Calloway was reborn choosing to begin a new life in Christ. On Aug. 26, she went to her eternal home in heaven, blessed with a new pain-free body, embraced by her Savior and reunited with her sister, Mary, who has always been close knit during all of their journeys.

Her life was always about love and giving whether it was during her working years, kindly waitressing everywhere she lived, or spending even her last years caring for Mary during her own struggle with cancer, babysitting grandkids or being an active, loving help with whatever family function or need arose.

While Mrs. Calloway lives on in heaven, her love and memories live on as well in the hearts of her four children, James O. Armstrong and Patty A. Armstrong, both of Bridgewater, VA,  Donnie A. Armstrong of Singers Glen, VA, and Kathy Shelton of  Max Welton; and three step-children, Robyn Drolet of Huntsville, AL, Walter Calloway of Ozark, AL, and Kirt Calloway of Birmingham, AL. With all of the love she had, it extended far to 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who will love and miss her dearly all of our lives. Her family very much appreciated Solid Rock Church in Spartanburg, SC, and her secret sister.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at Greatest Freedom Ministries, Harrisonburg, VA.   

Fred Amos Swick Jr., five-week-old son of Fred Amos Swick Sr., and Jacquelyn April Colosi of Spotsylvania, VA, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA. 

He was born July 17, 2008, in Boston, MA.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Johnathon Swick of Spotsylvania, VA; paternal grandparents, Peggy Ours Younce of Stafford, VA, and Michael T. Swick of Petersburg; maternal grandparents, Kathy and John Zellars of Spotsylvania, VA; paternal great-grandparents, Annie A. Ours Davis of Franklin and Myrtle Swick of Petersburg; and maternal great-grandparents, Linda and Dennis Spies of Spring Hill, FL; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by paternal great-grandparents, Fred A. Ours and Joe D. Swick.  

The Rev. David Krause conducted the funeral Thursday at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial will be at Landes-VanMeter Cemetery, Smoke Hole.
