Andrew M. Mitchell, 87

Andrew Morris Mitchell, 87, Harrisonburg, VA, died on Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Mitchell was born Dec. 31, 1915, on Mitchell Mountain and was a son of Andrew Jackson and Hannah Elizabeth Mowery Mitchell

He was a member of the south Mill Creek Church of the Brethren in Kline.  He was a farmer by trade and worked for Shenandoah Poultry Plant, and retired in 1962. 

He was united in marriage Oct. 6, 1940, to Nina Bell Riggleman of Harrisonburg, VA, who survives. 

Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter and son-in-law, Polly and Claude Pittington of Harrisonburg, VA; grandchildren and spouses, Rodney and Melanie Pittington, Cristal and Kareem Martin, Connie and Tony Atkins and Angela Humphries; seven great-grandchildren, David, Daniel, Jeremy, Mikael, Chantel, Hailey, and Kori; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sister, Albert J. Mitchell, Lela G. Graham, Emma L. Mitchell, Oscar L. Mitchell, Minnie M. Crites, Philip R. Mitchell, Harry C. Mitchell and Jesse J. Mitchell.  

A funeral service  was conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Johnson Funeral Service chapel with Pastor Tim Atkins officiating.  Interment followed in Oaklawn Cemetery in Bridgewater, VA. 

Doris Lee Spitzer, 64

Doris Lee Spitzer, age 64, of Wilmington, DE, and formerly of Upper Tract, has passed away in Delaware. 

Mr. Spitzer was born August 29, 1938, in Weymer and was a son of the late Charles T. Spitzer and Annie Kurkendoll Spitzer. 

He worked as an HVAC mechanic with Wilmington Heating Company until retiring in 1998.

He is survived by his long time companion, Lillian Girdner, sons, Douglas L. Girdner of Wilmington, DE, and Lee Spitzer, Jr., of Florida; daughters, Rayanna Girdner and Robin Girdner, both of Wilmington DE, and Sue Teresa and Peggy Spitzer, all of Florida;  two brothers, Charles Spitzer of Kissimmee, FL, and Hank Spitzer of Upper Tract; two sisters, Arlena Hinkle of Manassas, VA, and Marie Hull of Hazlehurst, GA; and an aunt, Evelyn Hedrick of Upper Tract. 

A memorial service is planned and the time and date will be announced.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to assist with funeral expenses in care of the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Rd., Newark, DE 19702.

Jackie G. Sponaugle, 77

Funeral services for Jackie Guinn Sponaugle, age 77, of Baxter, were held Saturday, August 2, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in the Baxter Chapel of Hooper, Huddleston, Horner Funeral Home.  Bro. Glea Shelley and Bro. Vincent Baker officiated.  Burial followed in the Palmer Cemetery. 

Mrs. Sponaugle died Thursday morning, July 31, 2003, in Gordonsville. 

She was born December 19, 1925, in Jackson County to the late Larmon and Mary Upchurch Guinn.  she was a homemaker, a member of Bethany Methodist Church, a member of the Baxter Senior Citizens and an avid quilter. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Comie Sponaugle; son, Ronnie Sponaugle; two sisters, Geraldine Calhoun and Thelma Finn; two brothers, Frank and Vann Guinn. 

She is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, James and Jo Sponaugle of Gordonsville, Mark and Jenell Sponaugle of Baxter, and Pat Sponaugle of Silver Point; five grandchildren, Vanessa Sponaugle, Valerie Brooks, Jamin Sponaugle, Carla Sponaugle and Casey Sponaugle; two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Mason Taheny; one step-great-granddaughter, Amy Brooks; two brothers, Winell Guinn of Bloomington Springs, and Virgil Guinn of Baxter. 

Bonnie J. McGuinness, 66

Bonnie Josephine McGuinness, 66, of Maysville, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.

Mrs. McGuinness was born Jan. 28, 1937, in Maysville and was the daughter of the late Earl Rohrbaugh and Josephine Hawk Rohrbaugh. 

She and her husband owned and operated McGuinness Grocery in Jordan Run from 1959 to 1986.  They were current owners and operators of the McGuinness Poultry.  She was a member of the Jordan Run Union Church. 

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, James G. McGuinness, formerly of Upper Tract; two sons, Michael G. McGuinness of Maysville and Patrick J. McGuinness of Keyser, a daughter, Christa Jo McGuinness of Maysville; a brother Ray M. Rorhbaugh of Maysville; and four grandchildren, Sabrina Nichole McGuinness, Shannon Brooke McGuinness, Shawnna Haley McGuinness and Shane Patrick McGuinness. 

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Willis Rohrbaugh and Riley Rohrbaugh. 

The Revs. Paul Donaldson and Lynn Rohrbaugh conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at Jordan Run Union Church.  Burial was at the Rohrbaugh cemetery in Jordan Run.  

Memorial donations may be made to Jordan Run Union Church or a charity of choice. 

The Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg was in charge of the arrangements.
