Maxine R. Dunkle

Maxine R. Dunkle, 84, of Franklin died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin.   

Mrs. Dunkle was born Feb. 12, 1920, in Ruddle and was a daughter of the late Preston Ruddle and Clara (Ruddle) Ruddle. 

She retired as a seamstress from Connie Sportswear in 1994 with 28 years of service.  She was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church. 

Her husband, Norman Glenn Dunkle, preceded her in death May 23, 1962.  

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Ann Hott and husband, Roger, and B. Kaye Simmons and husband Carl; a sister, Pauline Harman; two brothers, Reed Ruddle and Richard Ruddle, all of Franklin; two grandsons, John Michael Hott, II, and Charles "Eddie" Armentrout; and six great-grandchildren, John Michael, II, Alexandra, Carter and Colby Hott and Charles "Chucky" and Martina Armentrout.  

 She was also preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen. 

The Rev. David Fisher conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Saturday at Walnut Street United Methodist Church, Franklin by Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to Walnut Street United Methodist church or the Pendleton Nursing Home. 

Jack Douglas Smith 

Jack Douglas Smith, 77, of bunker Hill, and formerly of Keyser, died Saturday, August 7, 2004, at City Hospital.

At his request, the body was cremated.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, at 2:00 p.m. at "The Pines" in Keyser. 

Fellowship will be one-half hour previous and following the service. 

No flowers, please. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society or the Salvation Army.  

Gilbert Kenny Sponaugle

Gilbert Kenny Sponaugle, 80, of Circleville died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mr. Sponaugle was born May 5, 1924, in Hunting Ground and was the son of the late Gilbert and Annie Mallow Sponaugle. 

He was a timber cutter and a farmer.  He was an Army veteran of World War II. 

He was married to Pauline Warner Sponaugle of Cherry Grove. 

He is also survived by a daughter, Darlene Gail Criccho of Jacksonville, FL; two sons, Eber Dale Sponaugle and David Sponaugle, both of Circleville; two sisters, Mary Bennett of Cleveland, OH, and Halene Ogden of Bowden; eight grandchildren, Stefanie, Isiac, Cassie, Christina, Robert, Oscar, Tommie and Richard; and two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Keegan. 

 He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Zallie, Eber, Bennie, Brison and Berlin Sponaugle; two sisters, Shirley Johnson and Ethel Arbogast; and one grandson, Jason Dale Sponaugle. 

The Rev. Mark McCallister conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at North Fork Baptist Church .  Burial was at the Sponaugle family cemetery with military honors by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, was in charge of funeral arrangements.  

Memorial donations may be made to the North Fork Rescue Squad or the Circleville Fire Volunteer Department.   

Regina Cheryl Jecko

Regina Cheryl Jecko, 56, of Grottoes, VA, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at her home. 

Mrs. Jecko was born Feb. 24, 1948 in Frank and was a daughter of Thelma Ruth Cummins Mallow of Circleville and the late Wade Hilbert Mallow.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God in Grottoes.  She graduated from Circleville High School. 

Her husband, Ronald James Jecko, preceded her in death in January, 1969. 

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter Deanna Lea Jecko of Petersburg; three sons, Tony William Sites, Jr., of Riverton, Jamie William Sites of Circleville and Anthony Shane Sites of Harrisonburg, VA; a sister, Darlene Ruth Cooper of Circleville; a brother David Wade Mallow of Franklin; two grandchildren, Megan Jecko and Conner Sites;  and one nephew, Joshua Wade Mallow.  

The Rev. Earl Bible will conduct a graveside service at 2 p.m. today at the North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton. 

Arrangements are by the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin and the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA. 

Clovis Dellinger, 67

Clovis Guy "Dell" Dellinger, 67, of Ringgold, GA, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004.  

Mr. Dellinger retired from the U.S. Air Force after 25 years, having served all around the world-- Turkey, Germany, England and Vietnam, to name a few.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. 

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Dellinger, two sons, Larry J. Allen of Chatsworth, GA, and John P. Allen of Ringgold GA; three brothers, David Dellinger of Broadway, VA, Robert F. Dellinger of Timberville, VA, and Donald W. Dellinger of Sugar Grove; five sisters, Virginia Dove of Timberville, VA, Phyllis Halterman of Lost City, Louella See of Harrisonburg, VA, Fay Whitmer of Pineville, VA, and Christine Taylor of Harrisonburg, VA; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  

The Rev. Thomas Max Kessler condcuted the funeral a 1 p.m. WEdnesday at Heritage FUneral Home, Fort Oglethorpe, GA.  Burial was at the National Cemetery.

Thelma Michael, 78

Thelma Jane Eckard Michael, 78, of Hinton, VA, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mrs. Michael was born Sept. 17, 1925, in Sugar Grove and was the daughter of the late John M. and Sarah Cathernine Losh Eckard. 

She worked for Wampler Foods in Hinton, VA, from 1960 to 1990.  She was of the Lutheran Faith.  

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Reese of Bridgewater, VA, and Judy Charlton of Grottoes, VA; four sons, Bernard Bennett of Hinton, VA, Jerry Eckard of Harrisonburg, VA, Steven Day and David Day, both of Dayton, VA; a twin sister, Alma Nesselrodt of Brandywine; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.  

The Rev. Tony Martin conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Spring Creek Church of the Nazarene.  Burial was in the Mount Horeb Cemetery by Johnson funeral Servie Chapel in Bridgewater, VA.

V.K. Pennington, 46

Virginia Katherine "Ginnie" Pennington, 46, of Petersburg died WEdnesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at her residence. 

Mrs. Pennignton was born Dc. 15, 1957, in Rough Run and was the daughter of the late Ivan W. Whetzel and Vernie Vivian (Alt) Whetzel.

She graduated from Franklin High School in 1975.  She worked for the Petersburg Garment Company and attended the Lighthouse Community Church. 

Surviving are her husband, Russell L. Pennington, Sr.; one son, Scott Self of Petersburg; three step sons, Robert Pennington of Upper Tract, Russell L. Pennington Jr. of Circleville, and Rodney Pennington of Maysville; one step daughter, Rachel Pennington of Martinsburg; two step grandchildren; one sister, Josephine Hyatt of Washington, IN; a half sister, Nettie Carter of Parsons; and two brothers, Joseph Alt of Old Fields and Douglas Alt.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ellen Whetzel; and a half brother, Bruce Alt. 

The Rev. Joseph Eversole conducted graveside services Friday at 3:0 p.m. at the Maysville Cemetery. 

A memorial service was held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Lighthouse Community Church, Maysville, with the Rev. Joseph Eversole officiating.

Samuel H. Moats, 54

Samuel Henry Moats, 54, of Clarksville, TN, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in a Clarksville, TN, hospital.

Mr. Moats was born May 22, 1950, in Sugar Grove and was the son of the late William and Nellie Moats. 

He spent his early life in Harrisonburg, VA, and served in the U.S. Army for 27 years, retiring in 1997.  He was employed at the Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville, TN, before becoming ill.  

Survivors include his wife, Anna Hess Moats, a daughter, Isabelle Boose of Germany; two sisters, Brenda Moats and Treva Moats, both of Harrisonburg, VA; two brothers, Charles Arnold Losh and Richard Losh, both of Harrisonburg, VA; and two grandchildren.  

The Rev. Ancil Childress conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker, VA.  Burial followed at the Nuckles Cemetery on Fletcher's Ridge with military honors by the American Legion Post 164 of Grundy.  

Arthur Simmons, 74

Arthur "Harlan" Simmons, 74, of Doe Hill, VA, died Sunday Aug. 15, 2004, at the Avante at Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mr. Simmons was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Pendleton County and was the son of the late Clarence and Ella Leach Simmons. 

He was a self-employed logger. 

Survivors include two sons, Lowell simmons and wife, Tammy of Doe Hill, VA, and Dennis Simmons and wife, Susan of blue Grass, VA; a brother, Arch Simmons of Staunton, VA; two grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Virginia Simmons of Port Republic, VA. 

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Richard Simmons. 

The Rrv. Jerry Smith conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA.  Burial was at St. Paul Independent Lutheran Church Cemetery.
