Clora Esther Bodkins Simmons, 84, Staunton, VA died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA.

Mrs. Simmons was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Sugar Grove and was a daughter of the late Kennie Eli and Clare Rebecca Simmons Bodkin.

She was employed at Augusta Dairies and retired from Shop & Save in 1979. She was a lifelong member of the Staunton Church of the Brethren and was an active member of the Sunshine Class and the Senior Adult group. She delivered meals for the Staunton Senior Center for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Hershel B. Simmons; a son, Robert J. Simmons, Smith Mountain Lake, VA; a daughter, Patsy "Pat" Phillips, Mount Crawford, VA; a sister, Beulah M. Bodkin, Staunton, VA; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Jerry W. Ruff and Harold W. Campbell conducted a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Staunton Church of the Brethren. A private burial was a t Augusta Memorial Park.

Robert Pennington, 75, Lynchburg, VA, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Mr. Pennington was born Aug. 28, 1925, in Pendleton county and was a son of the late Edward Pennington and Cecila Smith Pennington.

He was a retired farmer.

Surviving are a daughter, Joyce Sutherly and her husband, Donald of Port Republic, VA; a son Bobby Pennington, Grottoes, VA; a brother, Ben Pennington, Jacksonville, FL; three sisters, Marvel Morlen, Wiley Ford, Vernie White, Baltimore, MD, and Ann Stearns, Maryland; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Thompson.

Jack David Cooper, 67, Woodstock, VA, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Tandem Health Care in Woodstock, VA.

Mr. Cooper was born Aug. 22, 1933, at Mouth of Seneca and was a son of the late Ernie Benjamin Cooper, Sr. and Daisy Belle Painter Cooper.

He was a veteran of the US Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Muhlenberg Post No. 199 American Legion and the first Baptist Church in Woodstock, VA. He was owner and operator of Jack's Tire Company and C&C Auto Sales in Edinburg, VA.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Vizard Cooper, whom he married Nov. 3, 1956; two sons, Tim L. Cooper and Derek W. Cooper, both of Woodstock, VA; a daughter, Stephanie Cooper Sherman, Woodstock, VA three sisters, Olive Arementrout, Franklin, Anne Cubbage, Harrisonburg, VA, and Pat Cooper, Edinburg., VA; four brothers, Gene Cooper, Harrisonburg, VA, Jerry Cooper and Benny Cooper, both of Woodstock, VA, and Harry Cooper, Edinburg, VA; and eight grandchildren.

Dr. Ray Frazier and the Rev. George Bowers conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Woodstock, VA, with full military honors by the Strasburg American Legion Post 77 at the church following the service. Burial was at Rest Haven Gardens in Harrisonburg, VA.

Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, VA, was in charge of the arrangements.

Lester Davis, 58, Wardesnville, and formerly of Seneca Rocks, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA.

Mr. Davis was born Aug. 24, 1942, in Onego and was a son of the late Elmer and Iva Mae Harper Davis.

He had been employed at the L.E. Myers Company in Rural Hall, NC, and the Richardson and Wayland Electrical Company in Roanoke, VA.

He is survived by three sons, Leslie Davis, Frederick, MD, and Lester Davis II, , Ryan Davis, both of Baker; three daughters, Lisa Killen, Frederick, MD, Rachel Tharp, Wardensville, VA, and Crystal Dove, Baker; a sister, Ruth Conrad, Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg; two brothers, Earl Davis, Littlestown, PA, and Roy Davis, Petersburg; and five grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Hedrick.

The Rev. Glenden Berg conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at the Waybright-Davis family cemetery in Onego.

Betty Jane Champ Kimble, 55, Petersburg, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, MD.

Mrs. Kimble was born July 28, 1946, in Smoke Hole and was a daughter of Roxie May Champ Shirk of Franklin and the late John Melvin Camp.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Gerald W. Kimble; two sons, Richard Paul Phares and Melvin Russell Kimble, both of Petersburg, a step-son, Gerald W. Kimble, Jr., Durgon; a daughter, Andrea Marshall, Moorefield; five brothers, David Shirk, Dorcas, Jack Edward Shirk and Carl Shirk, both of Upper Tract, Dale Shirk, Franklin, and Olie Shirk, Moorefield,; six grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Pastor Calvin S. Redman conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at the Champ family cemetery in Smoke Hole.

Zac Alston Paul Alt, one-month-old son of David L. and Janice L. "Peep" Haggarty Alt of Dorcas, died Sunday Aug. 5, 2001 at his home.

He was born July 9, 2001, in Petersburg.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Triston David Alt, at home; his grandparents, Mary Haslacker, Mernie and Paul Kimble, and Leon and Phyllis Alt, all of Dorcas; and his great-grandparents, Clara Kidy Stump and Cletus and Leota Thorne, all of Dorcas; several aunts and uncles; and several great aunts and uncles, including Kathy McConnell of Franklin.

The Revs. Craig A. Howard, Gregory A. Rotruck and Thomas "Sam" Goldizen conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brake Church of the Brethren. Burial was at Brake Cemetery in Dorcas.
