Mary Evelyn Vandevander, 84, of Riverton died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

Mrs. Vandevander was born Nov. 16, 1923, in Teterton and was the daughter of the late George Ivan and Irma Susan Mallow Harper.

She retired in 1986 from the Joan Curtis Sewing Factory in Petersburg. She was a member of the Dixie Homemakers for more than 20 years and loved to travel.

Her husband, Arlie Clifton “Pete” Vandevander, preceded her in death Dec. 14, 2003.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Liller of Moorefield; a son, Donnie Vandevander of Riverton; two sisters, Myrtle Bobo of Lahmansville, and Kathryn Ganoe of Romney, one grandson, D. J. Vandevander, and one great-grandson, Lucas Vandevander.

She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Timothy Wimer.

Pastor Tommy George will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday from the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial will be in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.

Dorothy Ann Vandevander, 60, of Brandywine died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

She was born May 17, 1948, in Old Fields and was a daughter of the late George Edward Shockey and Louise Katherine McDonald Shockey.

She was employed at the Hanover Shoe Factory and was a waitress at Brandywine Restaurant, H&J and Fox's in Brandywine. She attended the Brandywine Christian Church.

She had been married to Willis Vandevander.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Ann Vandevander of Middletown, PA, and Vicki Guynn of Connellsville, PA; a son, Chris Vandevander of Brandywine; two sisters, Mary Jane Bolton of Brandywine and Betty May of Sugar Grove; five brothers, Ray Shockey and Paul Shockey, Jr., both of Brandywine, George Shockey of Biglerville, PA, Roger Shockey and Wayne Shockey, both of Old Fields; and four grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a brohter, Alvin Shockey; and a sister, Goldie Bolton. 

The funeral was held Sunday at Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Pastor Scott Meadows officiating.

Mayo H. Judy

Mayo Hartman Judy, 86, of Beaufort, NC, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at Carteret General Hospital, Morehead City, NC..

Mr. Judy was born in Pendleton County and was a son of the late Omer and Mary Judy.

He was a retired marine biologist with NOAA Lab on Pivers Island and served in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Theater during World War II.

His wife, Serena Hammer Judy, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving friend, Martha Jones; three sons, Gregory Judy of Washington, NC, and Roy Judy and wife, Sharon, and Jeff Judy, and wife, Lynn, all of Beaufort, NC; three brothers, Omer Judy Jr. of Monterey, VA, Billy Judy of Keezletown, VA, and Jack Judy of Franklin; a sister, May Jo Wilfong of Franklin; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jim Durner conducted the funeral at North River United Methodist Church in Beaufort, NC. Burial followed at Carteret Memorial Gardens.

John "JK" Dailey, 76

John Kenneth "JK" Dailey, 76, of Wellsburg and formerly of Franklin, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in the Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling. 

Born June 19, 1932, in Wheeling, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Thelma White Dailey.

He received his masters from West Virginia University and was a special education teacher. 

Surviving are a brother, Jimmy Dailey and wife, Marlene. 

Services and interment were held at the convenience of the family. 

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kepner Funeral Home, Wheeling.  

Thomas I. Burner

Thomas I. Burner, 68, of Franklin died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Burner was born Feb. 25, 1940, in Frank and was the son of the late Elizabeth Burner Maiden. His stepfather, Ernest Maiden, also preceded him in death.

Before moving to Franklin, he had been a construction worker for Monongahela Power Company in Parkersburg. He attended Totten Chapel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by  a special friend, ARlene Botkin of Moyers; two daughters, Pamela Davis and Jody Chaney, both of Parkersburg; a sister, Debra Hoeper of Silver Spring, MD, and four grandchildren. 

Brad Mitchell and Pastor Dave Boger conducted the funeral Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin. Burial was in Arbovale Cemetery.

Ralph B. Self, 81

Ralph Beeler Self, 81, of Grottoes, VA, passed away Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at his home. 

Mr. Self was born on June 12, 1927, in the Brushy Run area of Pendleton County, W.Va. to the late Alvin Self and Emma Rosetta Alt Self.

Ralph served in the United States Air Force and retired after 25 years achieving the rank of Master Sgt. His military career guided him to the Pentagon, where he met his former wife, Marjorie J. Self. Together, they opened Ralph's Grill on Market Street in downtown Harrisonburg, VA. He later was employed by Kawneer Company, Inc., where he retired in 1992 and then assisted part-time at Whetsel Seed Company in Harrisonburg, VA.

He is survived by a son, Ralph B. "Sonny" Self Jr. and wife, Karen, of Mathias; a daughter, Patricia S. "Pat" Jackson and husband, Rick, of Harrisonburg, VA; two brothers, Paul R. Self and Delmar D. Self; three sisters, Doris McDaniel, Eva R. Ailer and Ruth Fulk; one granddaughter, Kimberli D. Jackson of Harrisonburg, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Pinkney R. Self, John T. Self and G. Orville Self.

Pastor Wayne Wright conducted a funeral service Tuesday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg, VA. Burial followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Curtis E. Whetzel Jr., 37

Curtis Edwin Whetzel Jr., 37, of Harrisonburg, VA and Charlottesville, VA, died Sunday, July 27, 2008, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA.

Mr. Whetzel was born April 11, 1971, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was a son of Myrtle Catalano of Harrisonburg, VA, and the late Curtis Edwin Whetzel Sr.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by three daughters, Ashley, Allison and Jesica Whetzel and their mother, Kimberly Plaugher, all of Franklin; a brother, Charles Andrews of Harrisonburg, VA; and a sister, Crystal Sorrells of Fulks Run, VA.

A gathering of family and friends was held Sunday at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, Fishersville, VA.
