Thelma Fortney, 97

Thelma Shreve Fortney, 97, of St. Clair's Mobile Home Village, Morgantown, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Monongalia General Hospital.

Mrs. Fortney was born in Pendleton County on December 30, 1912, and was the daughter of the late Alvin Vernon Shreve and Cleda Bowers Shreve.

She was a graduate of Franklin High School and received her nursing degree from Davis & Elkins College.  Her 60-year nursing career spanned working for Dr. Russell Coffindaffer of Shinnston, Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center in Clarksburg and finally Walter Reed Medical Center, where she retired.

She was a past matron and a 50-year member of Shinnston Chapter 103 Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Queen Esther Chapter 11 Order of Eastern Star of Clarksburg.

She loved sewing, playing cards and games, working crossword puzzles, gardening, canning, cooking and baking.  She was also an avid football fan, following the WVU Mountaineers every season.

Surviving are a daughter - Nancy F. Turner and husband, Peter of Morgantown; three grandchildren, Christopher L. Piggott and Rita L. Church, both of Morgantown, and Toni Diane Salerno Williams of Clarksburg; five great-grandchildren, Amber Dawn Pigott, Marcus David Slauer, Mollie Ryan Slauer, Aubrie Rose Williams and Aliza Grace Williams; one great-great-grandson; one sister, Imogene Alt of Baltimore, MD; and several nieces and nephews

Her wishes for cremation have been honored by her family.

A graveside committal service will be held today in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery, Shinnston, with Rev. Craig L. Falkenstein officiating.

Hastings Funeral Home of Morgantown is in charge of the arrangements.

Gilbert Page Wright, Jr.

Gilbert Page Wright, Jr., 78, of Shepherdstown went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg.

Born July 16, 1932 in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Gilbert Page Wright, Sr. and Virginia Sperow Wright.

Mr. Wright was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Army.  He was a lifelong farmer and a graduate of Shepherdstown High School.

He was a 4-H All Star, on the board of directors of Camp Frame, past president of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau and served on the Farm Service Agency for 24 years.  He was also a member of the Jefferson County Planning Commission.

He was a member of Marvins Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Harriet W. McCoy of Franklin and Ophelia W. McClung of Orange, VA; nephews and nieces, John McCoy and wife, Terri of Franklin, Molly Peck and husband, Tim, and Martha McCoy, all of Charlottesville, VA, Chad McClung and wife, Kim of Kent, WA, Lorna Jill and husband, Dennis Cook of Sierra Vista, AZ, and Amy McClung, of Orange, VA; six great-nieces; and four great-nephews.

Funeral services were held at Monday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with Pastor Harvey Bane and Rev. Dennis Jackman officiating.  Interment followed in Green Hill Cemetery.

Cecil Charles Bennett

Cecil Charles Bennett, 73, passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at his residence in Beverly.

Mr. Bennett was born on Dec. 11, 1936, in Cherry Grove and was the son of the late Dossie and Lura Arbogast Bennett.

He was a member of the late Big Run Presbyterian Church, worked at Howes Leather Company and was also a sawmill worker.

He was twice married, first to Minnie Pearl Vandevander, who survives in Elkins, and then to Shirley Tingler of Beverly.

Also surviving are two daughters, Angela Cleaver and husband, Joe of Fulks Run, VA, and JoAnn Shook and husband, Charlie of Verona, VA; three sons, Cecil Bennett and Bradley Bennett, both of Cherry Grove, and Matthew Bennett of Charmco; one sister, Radie Wilmoth of Circleville; two brothers, Russell Bennett and Toy Bennett, both of Circleville; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Big Run Presbyterian Church in Cherry Grove with Rev. Sam Harper officiating.  Interment will be in the Arbogast Family Cemetery, Cherry Grove.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.

Bryan Hartman

Bryan Hartman, 88, of Franklin died Monday, Aug. 2, 2010, at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

He was born Dec. 12, 1921, at Cherry Grove and was the son of the late Hobart Hartman and Mary Susan Whitecotton Hartman.

He had worked for the WV Dept. of Highways and Marvel Poultry.  He was a member of the Smith Creek Church of the Brethren.

He is survived by three sisters, Sudie Hartman of Tennessee and Elizabeth H. Harper and Thelma Peck, both of Franklin; 12 nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Edgar Hartman, Roy Hartman, Russell Hartman and Roscoe Hartman; and one sister, Maggie Hartman.

Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Pastor Daryl Ritchie officiating.  Burial will be at the Isaac H. Hartman Cemetery near Franklin.
