Walter Burris Mullen, Jr.

Walter Burris Mullen, Jr., 63, of Franklin died Friday, July 23, 2010, at his home.

He was born May 1, 1947, at Millville, NJ, and was the son of the late Walter B. Mullen, Sr. and Kathleen Macken Mullen.

He had worked as a maintenance engineer in Northern Virginia and also worked at Rocco Poultry.  He was a US Army Veteran, having served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1969 and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

On Feb. 7, 1970, he married Maria Rizzo Mullen, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Tracey Judy and husband, Brian of Upper Tract, Michelle Mullen and husband, Josh of Moorefield, and Nichole Mullen of Franklin; two sons, Walter Nathan Mullen and wife, Sandra of Nettie and Christopher Mullen of Franklin; one sister, Catherine Bevelle of New Jersey; and five grandchildren, Tyler, Jared, Sarah, Bethany and Joseph and fiancee Amanda.

A memorial service was conducted at the Kimble Funeral Home on Monday with Rev. Sam Harper officiating and members of the Pendleton County Honor Guard conducting military services.

Hazel Arbutus Harman

Hazel Arbutus Harman, 83, passed away at Culpepper Health and Rehab Center, Culpeper, VA, on July 19, 2010.

She was born in Gorman, MD, on Aug. 31, 1926, the daughter of the late Frank and Olive Rinker Jordan.

She attended D & E College for two years, was a member of the North Fork Farm Women's Club, a member of Lighthouse Community Church and enjoyed sewing, canning, WVU sports and Petersburg High School sports.  She was the former owner and operator of Harman's Fabric Shop in Petersburg and co-owner of Harman Well Drilling in Petersburg.

Her husband, Jimmie B. Harman, preceded her in death on May 23, 2001.

Surviving are three daughters, Janet Weese and husband, Randy of Warrenton, VA, Anne Harman of Franklin and Martha Ours and husband, Scotty of Dorcas; two sisters, Ethel Lee of Inwood and Mary Kyle and husband, Norman of Bayard; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, James Eston Harman.

Rev. Joseph Eversole will officiate a memorial service on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Lighthouse Community Church, Maysville.  Interment was at Lahmansville Cemetery in Lahmansville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lighthouse Community Church, Maysville.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Petersburg, and Joynes Funeral Home, Warrenton, VA.
