Dennis Fred Warner

Dennis Fred Warner, 66, of Dayton, VA, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2011, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

He was born Oct. 21, 1944, in Franklin and was the son of the late Fred Marion (Oct. 31, 1977) and Annie Lucille Warner (Jan. 2, 2004).

Mr. Warner was a 1963 graduate of Franklin High School. He was employed for 42 years at Walker Manufacturing as the lead person in pipe. He was assistant fire chief and a life member of Clover Hill Volunteer Fire and rescue, Company 17. He was Lutheran by faith.

Also surviving are a son, Michael Lynn Warner of Dayton, VA; two sisters, Betty Jean Hoover of Franklin and Shirley Thompson and husband, Richard of Bridgewater, VA; five brothers, W. Carl Warner and Gaylon Warner and wife, Bonnie, all of Hinton, VA, Nathan Warner and wife, Linda, and Jimmie M. Warner and wife, Susan, all of Franklin, and Steven Warner, and wife, Wanda.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. J. Jarred Smith officiating. Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery, Moyers.

An honorable and patriotic man, he enlisted in the US Air Force at 17 and served for 23 years in the Korea, Vietnam and Cold War conflicts. According to him, his greatest achievement was serving on the crew of Air Force One for five different presidents.

After retiring to Franklin, Mr. Harding continued to serve his community, most notably as the county librarian where he was instrumental in the construction of the new Pendleton County Library. In 1995, he moved to Morgantown where he dedicated the rest of his life ensuring the quality of life for his son, Robert. He was always willing to lend support to those in need and will be dearly missed for the love, compassion and concern that he gave to others.

Surviving are his wife, Marca Paparozzi of Morgantown; two sons, Jon Harding, Captain, US Navy, and wife, Laurie of Huntingtown, MD, and Robert of Morgantown; three stepdaughters, Stephania, Diana and Christina; a step-son, Marcus; a sister, Peggy Yanelli; a brother, John Harding of Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Sara, Sean, Samantha and Seth; and many cousins and friends.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated today at St. John’s University Parish, Morgantown, by Fr. Rey Landicho as celebrant. Burial with full military honors will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at a later date.

The family received friends at the Dering-Henson Funeral Home, Morgantown, Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will do so again this morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. John’s University Parish, Morgantown.

He was born May 12, 1912, at Sugar Grove and was the son of the late Harry and Elizabeth Jane Puffenbarger Snyder.

Mr. Snyder was baptized in the Christian faith and was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church. He was a Sunday School teacher and organist for 60 years. He was a school teacher for two years, owned and operated the lime company at Sugar grove and was deputy sheriff of Pendleton County for four years and county road supervisor for three years. He became a surveyor and worked for NAGAS, a gas line for the Sugar Grove Navy Base.

Mr. Snyder moved to Churchville, Va, where he worked with the Dept. Of Game and Inland Fisheries for 20 years. In 1985, they moved back to the county and had a home built, which is located next to Pendleton Manor.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Franklin with Pastors Craig and Wendy Richter officiating. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery.

She liked flowers, camping, fishing and doing word searches. She enjoyed music and friends, watching her birds and squirrels and canning and cooking.

Surviving are three daughters, Viola Lantz Miller of Timberville, VA, Jeanie Dove Lam of Shenandoah, Va, and Phyllis Lantz Allen of Lawrenceville, VA; two sons, Wayne Lantz of Timberville, VA, and Junior Dow Lantz of Edinburg, VA; five brothers, Bruce Borror of Upper Tract, Guy Borror of Tennessee, Emmett and Billy Borror, both of Harrisonburg, VA, and Patrick Borror of West Virginia; three sisters, June Eckard Palmer of IN, Jane Bennett of Morgantown and Ruby Sites of Petersburg; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two special care takers, Nancy Strawderman (Bean head) and Tracie Lam.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway, VA, with Pastor Kathleen Miko officiating. Burial followed at the Perry Moyer Memorial Cemetery in Bergton, VA.

Shirley Faye Hammer Kemper, 74, of Franklin passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born on Jan. 31, 1937, in Franklin, the daughter of the late Howard “Jake” (1987) and Geneva Brooks Hammer (2004).

Mrs. Kemper worked for Dahmer’s Restaurant and Thompson’s Restaurant. After marrying “Bob” Kemper, they ran Kemper’s Body Shop and later Kemper’s Store. If something was needed done, she learned how to do it. She ordered parts, mixed paint and went for parts, often with a grandchild in the old faithful blue van with

Mrs. Kemper was always a people person, and she updated the family history by visiting courthouses and cemeteries and collecting and recording facts that she kept for future reference. She kept busy with her hands by crocheting, latch hooking, painting sun catchers, collecting mugs, tending to her flowers and enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and pets. She gave wonderful advice, love, discipline and comfort to those who needed or wanted it. When the chaplain asked her where she got her outlook on life, her reply was “From my faith in God.” She assured everyone she was not afraid to die.

Also surviving are her children, Terry Hammer-Hill and husband, Emmett of Harrisonburg, VA, Susan Jo Ash of Ravenel, SC, Kelly Hammer and wife, Tammy of Franklin, and Cindy Varner and husband, Eugene of Sugar Grove; her step-children, Kathy Lockard and husband, Eddie of Franklin, Wanda Allaby, Karen Lineweaver and Mary Jordan, all of Ohio; four granddaughters; five grandsons; 11 step-granddaughters; eight step-grandsons; two great granddaughters; three great-grandsons; a great-grandson to be born soon; 18 step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Denzel Hammer and wife, Ruth of Troutville, VA.

A memorial service and a celebration of life was held on Sunday at the Shirley Kemper “homeplace” in Franklin with David Hartman officiating.

Joseph S. “Joe” Nesci, 56, of Franklin and formerly of Rowlesburg Passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011, at his home.

Surviving are two sisters and spouses, Vera and Wilbur Nestor of Stevenburg and Betty and Dana Engle of Michigan; three brothers and spouses, Tony and Kim Nesci of Rowlesburg, James and Kathryn Bucklew of Elk Garden and Carl and Janet Bucklew of Etam; several nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Donna.

Family and friends will be received at the Browning Funeral Home, Burke Chapel Rowlesburg today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Born and raised near Athens, OH, he graduated from Ohio State University in 1952 with a degree in education, and then enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War. He completed basic training and was selected for Officer Candidate School, where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation in 1953.

He served 26 years in the US Army and rose to the rank of Colonel. Throughout his distinguished career as an engineer officer, he served two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Germany and commanded the 39th Engineer Battalion during combat operations in Vietnam. He retired in 1978.

His professionalism, dedication to duty and personal integrity were recognized by and earned the respect and admiration of those who served with him. His military awards included two Legions of Merit, the bronze Star medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm.

He retired with his wife, Betty, to Upper Tract in 1979 and was a representative for Shawnee Log Homes. In 1987, they purchased the Ananias Pitsenbarger homestead on Dry Run Road and built their retirement home.

Mr. Munn was a loving and compassionate person, who was a life-long outdoorsman and inveterate traveler. He and his family traveled all over the world, through most of Europe and almost all of the contiguous United States, including driving his RV to Alaska with his third wife, Barbara.

His loving and close family meant everything to him. He was so dedicated to his family that he and his wife, Betty, moved to Texas and lived in an RV for two years outside the Wilford Hall Medical Center to help care for their critically ill granddaughter, Jill, while she was in the NICU. There was nothing he would not do for his family and friends.

In 1998, Mr. Munn reconnected with his high school girlfriend, Barbara Bean. In 1999, they married, and he moved from Pendleton County to Orlando, FL, which they called home for his final years.

He is survived by his current wife, Barbara; a daughter, Betty Lynn Munn of orlando, FL; a son, Jeff Munn of Franklin; a brother, Gerson Munn of Lexington, KY; and a sister, Nita Marie Cordray of Westerville, OH.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin. Interment will be at the Munn Family Cemetery on Dry Run Road with full military honors conducted by the Pendleton County Veteran’s Honor Guard.

Barbara Jean (Smith) Strother, 74, widow of Garrnett “Poots” Strother of Staunton, VA, passed away Monday, July 18, 2011 in Northridge Medical Park in Charlottesville, VA. Mrs. Strother was born June 14, 1937, in Moyers, a daughter of the late Fredrick and Orphia Mabel (Moats) Smith.

She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and retired from Unifi in 2000 with 25 years of service as a machine operator. She loved to sew, crochet, and enjoyed the activities at the Senior center at Frontier Court.

Survivors include three sons, David Wright and wife, Leasna, Winkie Rose and wife, Tina, all of Fishersville, Va, and Anthony Wright and wife, Diana of Crosby, TX, and two daughters, Lynn Ellis and husband, William, Jr., of Staunton, VA, and Alma Latham of San Antonio, TX; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; an aunt and uncle Clona and Fred Moats; and a special friend, Barbara McDorman.

A celebration of life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel, Staunton, VA, by Pastor Samuel A. Anderson. Interment will be private in the Newtown Cemetery in Harrisonburg, VA.
