James Mitchell, 83

James Loy “Jim” Mitchell, 83, died Monday, July 12, 2010, at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

He was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Highland County, VA, and was the son of the late Loy Mitchell and Mary Byrd Mitchell.

He had been a welder for Maphis-Chapman and was a Veteran, having served in the US Navy.

Surviving are his former wife, Dorothy V. Mitchell of Sugar Grove; three step-children, Robin Eckard of Harrisonburg, VA, Donna Arrington and Ronnie Bowers, both of Sugar Grove; one sister, Phyllis Crigler of North Carolina; and 11 step-grandchildren, including one special step-grandson, Shaun Bowers of Sugar Grove.

He was also preceded in death by a step-son, Donnie Bowers.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Dr. Paul O’Gorek officiating.  Burial was at the St. Michael's Cemetery at Sugar Grove.

Tasman Graham, 78

Tasman Graham, 78, formerly of Upper Tract, died Friday, July 9, 2010, at his home in Bonney Lake, WA.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Curnow Funeral Home in Sumner, WA.

Ardella P. Lough, 91

Ardella P. Lough, 91, of Roanoke, VA, and formerly of Franklin, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.

Mrs. Lough was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she was active in all areas.  She graduated from Franklin High School in 1939.

Her husband, Ralph R. Lough, preceded her in death.

Surviving are her daughter, Patricia L. Peters; son, R. Eugene Lough and wife, Carolyn; eight grandchildren, Michael E. Stanley and wife, Melissa, Chris Stanley and wife, Stephanie, Spence Peters and wife, Whitney, Sean Lough and wife, June, Kara Thompson and husband, Robbie, Jory Thompson, Taylor Thompson, Dylan Thompson, Garret Thompson and Austin Thompson; nine great-grandchildren, Oliver Thompson, Michael Stanley, Katherine Stanley, Morgan Stanley, Nicholas Stanley, Lilly Stanley, Brooklyn Peters, Spencer Peters and Maggie Peters; a sister, Marie Lindley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held June 18 at Oakey’s North Chapel, Roanoke, VA, with Rev. E.E. “Dick” Jones officiating.  Interment was in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Richard Lee Raines

Richard Lee Raines, 73, passed away on Monday, July 5, 2010, at his residence in Riverton.

He was born on June 30, 1937, the son of the late Robert Martin and Edna Marie Simmons Raines.

Mr. Raines was a 1955 graduate of Circleville High School and was a member of the Riverton United Methodist Church.  He retired as a heavy equipment operator from Greer Industries after 45 years of service.

On Dec. 12, 1960, he married Nancy Auville Raines, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Cathy Raines Jennings and husband, Scott of Moorefield; a son, Terry Lee Raines of Riverton; a sister, Norma Teter and husband, Kenneth of Riverton; five brothers, Theodore Raines and wife, Lona of Snellville, GA, Johnnie Raines of Baltimore, MD, William C. Raines and Dwight Judy and wife, Ruthaleen, all of Riverton, and Robert Carl Raines of Madina, OH; three grandsons, Christopher Scott Jennings, Eric Scott Jennings and Ryan Kelly Raines.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Leota Agnes and Lora Catherine.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the chapel at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Earl Bible officiating.  Interment was in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.

Virginia Rhine, 76

Virginia Raynes Rhine, of Verona, VA, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2010, at the age of 76.

She was born in Sugar Grove on Oct. 16, 1933, and was a daughter of the late Frank and Ida Fletcher Eckard.

Mrs. Rhine resided in Maryland, where she retired from Sears after 30 years.  She, along with her husband, retired to Tennessee and resettled locally with her daughter following his passing.  She was an exceptionally friendly and determined person that enjoyed bluegrass, gospel, crafts and cooking.

Her first husband, Weldon B. Raynes, and her second husband, Melvin C. Rhine, preceded her in death.

Surviving are her daughter, Sandra K. Long (Robert) of Verona, VA; one sister, Sarah Oakes of Tennessee; three grandchildren, Bradley Raynes, David Powers, Jr. and Ashley Powers; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Raynes; a daughter, Phyllis Hough; two brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg, VA.  Interment followed at the Clover Hill Cemetery.
