Adrian Alan Simmons 
Mr. Adrian Alan Simmons, 26, of Raeford, NC and formerly of Franklin, WV died Wednesday, July 6, 2011.
He was born December 11, 1984 at Harrisonburg, VA and was the son of Daniel and Deborah Simmons Propst
of Franklin and Frank Sinclair of PA.He served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
On October 4, 2008, he married Nichole Dugan Simmons, who survives.
Also surviving are - One son - Liam Simmons of Raeford, NC; One sister - Katelyn Propst of Franklin, WV;
Maternal Grandparents - Reford and Treva Simmons of Franklin, WV; Paternal Grandparents, Eston & Judy Propst of Moyers, WV; Paternal Great-Grandmother, Virginia Propst of Moyers, WVHe was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Emmalynn Grace Simmons.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church at Moyers,
West Virginia with Pastors Craig & Wendy Richter officiating.

Mary Sue Weese
Mary Sue Weese, 58, of Brandywine died Sunday, July 10, 2011 at her home.
She was born Nov. 12, 1952, at Lorraine, OH, and was the daughter of Fred McCraw of Gassaway and the late
Wanda Jane Stump McCraw.She was a housekeeper at Ramada Inn.
On March 10, 1970, she married Jackie Dale Weese, Sr., who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Wanda Sturgeon and husband, John of Brandywine; two sons, Gary Weese of
Brandywine and Jackie Dale Weese, Jr. of Petersburg; one daughter-in-law, Ann Weese; two sisters Nancy Shaw and Linda Hensley and husband, David, both of Gassaway; three brothers, Jackie Lee McCraw and wife, Patty,Jimmy McCraw and wife, Connie and Ronnie David McCraw, all of Gassaway; and six grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter; and two brothers, Joe and Butch.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with
Pastor Pat Godfrey officiating.The family received friends on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
Funeral services will also be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Richard Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway. Burial will
be at Fairview Cemetery at Chapel.The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Richard Roach Funeral Home in

Shirley Faye Hammer Kemper, 74 of Franklin passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Rockingham Memorial
Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.She was born on Jan. 31, 1937, in Franklin, the daughter of the late Howard “Jake” (1987) and Geneva Brooks
Hammer (2004).She graduated in 1955 from Franklin High School and was a member of the Hammer Church of the Brethren.
Mrs. Kemper worked for Dahmer’s Restaurant. After marrying “Bob” Kemper, they ran Kemper’s Body Shop
and later Kemper’s Store. If something was needed done, she learned how to do it. She ordered parts, mixed paint and went for parts, often with a grandchild in the old faithful van with her. She did the bookkeeping, grocery orders, checked in deer and bear and ran the cash register.Mrs. Kempler was always a people person, and she updated the family history by visiting courthouses and
cemeteries and collecting and recording facts that she kept for future reference. She kept busy with her hands by crocheting, latch hooking, painting sun catchers, collecting mugs, tending to her flowers and enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and pets. She gave wonderful advice, love, discipline and comfort to those who needed or wanted it. When the chaplain asked her where she got her outlook on life, her reply was “from my faith in God.” She assured everyone she was not afraid to die.On July 9, 1976, she married Robert “Bob” Kemper, who survives in Franklin.
Also surviving are her children, Rerry Hammer-Hill and husband Emmett of Harrisonburg, VA, Susan Joe Ash of
Ravenel, SC, Kelly Hammer and wife, Tammy of Franklin, and Cindy Varner and husband, Eugene of Sugar Grove; her step-children, Kathy Lockard and husband, Eddie of Franklin, Wanda Allaby, Karen Lineweaver and Mary Jordan, all of Ohio; four granddaughters; five grandsons; 11 step-granddaughters; eight step-grandsons; two great granddaughters; three great-grandsons; a great-grandson to be born soon; 18 step-great-grandchildren; and a brothers, Denzel Hammer and wife, Ruth of Troutville, VA.Per Mrs. Kemper’s request her body has been cremated.
A memorial service and a celebration of life will be held on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Shirley Kemper
“homeplace” in Franklin with David Hartman officiating.Memorials may be made to Pendleton County Relay for Life.

Kate Edie Alt
Kate Edie (Calhoun) Alt, age 105, of Petersburg, died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Grant Memorial Hospital,
Petersburg.She was born May 5, 1906, in Brushy Run and was a daughter of the late Martin Dow Calhoun and Rachael Ann
(Graham) Calhoun.Mrs. Alt graduated from St. John’s Academy in 1929 and taught school in Pendleton and Grant counties for a
few years. She was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church at Mozer. She attended South Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, where she taught Sunday School for several years and attended Bethel Church of the Brethren.She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Her husband, Okey T. Alt, preceded her in death on March 4, 1988.
Surviving are her daughter, M. Rosalie Heavener and husband, Paul of Petersburg; a daughter-in-law, Lovetta
Alt of Petersburg; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great granddaughter.She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Anna Dale Alt; one son, Maxel D. Alt; two grandchildren, Lynn
Machefsky and David Alt; a daughter-in-law, Hazel Alt; seven brothers, Scott, Albridge, Curtis, Don, Carl, Olin and Quentin Calhoun; four sisters, Mabel Calhoun, Verna Riggleman, Lillian Miller and Bessie Hevener.Funeral services were held Saturday at Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Pastor Greg Rotruck and Pastor Glen Hamric. Interment was in the Wilson Chapel Cemetery, Upper Tract.

Charles Eugene Grimm, 72, of Petersburg, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2011, at Nella’s Nursing Home in
Elkins.He was born in Upper Tract on Aug. 6, 1938, the son of the late William George and Bessie Elizabeth Helmick
Grimm.Mr. Grimm attended school in Upper Tract and was employed by Hester’s in Moorefield.
Surviving are a sister, Hazel Hinkle of Woodstock, VA; and a brother, Virgil Grimm; and three sisters, Mary
Ann Grimm, Edith Hedrick and Violet Long.Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg with
Rev. Bruce Cosner officiating. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.Family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 p.m to 2 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Cathleen J. Dahmer Freas
Cathleen J. Dahmer Freas, 81, of Lacey Spring, VA, died July 10, 2011, at her home.
A daughter of the late Samuel and Jane Bolton Dahmer, she was born on Aug. 4, 1929, in Franklin.
Mrs. Freas graduated from Franklin High School and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. She
worked for WLR Good prior to her retirement in 1990. She was a member of the American Legion Post 188 and Vets Post No. 7 and the Lutheran Church. She deeply enjoyed volunteering and was a member of the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary and the Eagles Ladies Auziliary Aerie 4150.She had made her home in Baltimore, MD, prior to moving to Lacey Spring, VA, in 1977.
On March 8, 1952, she married Howard Frederick Freas, who preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1980.
Surviving are one son, Frederick William Freas, and wife, Marrie Mauro-Freas of Aberdeen, MD; one brother,
Dorlan Dahmer of Broadway, VA; one grandchild, Antionette Regina Mauro of Baltimore,; MD; and four greatgrandchildren, Cassi, Miranda, Sage and Eben.She was also preceded in death by a son, Jacob Clark Freas in 2001.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens with Captain Duane Burleigh
officiating.The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home,
Harrisonburg, VA.Memorial may be made to the Salvation Army, 185 Ashby Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
