Freda L. Thompson

Freda L. Thompson, 82, of Franklin, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin where she had resided for the past month. 

Mrs. Thompson was born August 2, 1920, at Davis and was the daughter of the late Ora F. Grady and Maude K. Hedrick Grady. 

She was a homemaker and a member of Reeds Creek United Methodist Church. 

On July 23, 1937, she married Ray O. "Coy" Thompson, who preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1999.

Surviving are three daughters, Ruby Gail Roberson of Franklin, Wilma Lee bowers of Harrisonburg, VA, and Sandra Kay Vandevander of Broadway, VA; two sons, Carroll B. Thompson of Riverdale, GA, and R. Keith Thompson of Franklin; one brother, Herbert Grady of Newark, OH; nine grandchildren; 1 step-granddaughter; and seven great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. 

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Gary Phillips and Rev. Stanley Kile officiating. 

Burial will be at Cherry Hill Cemetery at Upper Tract. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. tonight.  

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Ralph Jacob Bennett, 90

Ralph Jacob Bennett, 90, of Moorefield, and formerly of Riverton, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.  

Mr. Bennett was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Riverton and was the son of the late William Bennett and Lula Wimer Bennett. 

He was a dispatcher for the Keyser Police Station for several years and was a charter member of the Moorefield Church of God.

His first wife, Thelma Landis Bennett, preceded him in death in 1973. 

He is survived by his wife, Anna M. Whetzel Alexander Bennett; two daughters, Wilma Mae Truitt of Warfordsbury, PA, and Connie Sue Keys of Dumfries, VA; a stepson, Eugene Alexander of Moorefield; a sister, Maude Thompson of Keyser; a grandson; six step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.  

The Rev. Glendon Berg conducted the funeral 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at the Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens in LaVale, MD

Janie Elizabeth Ours, 90

Janie Elizabeth Ours, 90, of Dorcas died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Ours was born March 11, 1913, in Smoke Hole and was a duaghter of the late Abraham L. Nelson and Amanda Shirk Nelson. 

She was a cook and custodian at Dorcas Elementary School for several years and was a member of Brake Church of the Brethren.  

Her husband Evers T. Ours, Sr., preceded her in death on  Sept. 21, 1972. 

She is survived by two sons, Evers T. Ours, Jr., and Wayne Ours, both of Dorcas; three daughters, Leda Judy of Moorefield , Darlene Beg of Maysville, and bonnie L. Moyers, Dorcas; a sister, Bessie V. Nelson, Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg; a brother, John M. Nelson, Fort Ashby; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. 

The funeral was held Sunday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg with Pastor Craig Howard officiating.  Burial was at Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville.

John Putnam Luce, 68 

John Putnam Luce, 68, of Uvilla, died tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson. 

Mr. Luce was born april 8, 1935, in Newburgh, NY, and was a son of the late Frank Luce and Brabara (West) Luce.

He had been a commercial pilot, flight instructor, broadcaster, consultant, electrical engineer.  He had owned and operated Radio Station WXVA and WZFM in Charles Town  for 12 years.   Prior he had been with NASA in Greenbelt, MD, as an experiment director in spacecraft operations for seven years.  He was a faculty advisor at Shepherd College and he was a consultant for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.  He was of Episcopal faith.  

He was a graduate of University of Pennsylvania and Moore School of Electrical Engineering.  He was former president and member of Charles Town Lions Club, past president, Frederick, MD, Airport Association, an active member in Experimental aircraft Association, and was a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Mr. Luce was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. 

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Mary C. (Armentrout) Luce, of Uvilla; a son, Michael L. Luce, Braddock Heights, MD; a step-son, Larry W. Kimble, Hawaii; and his former wife, Susan Luce of Braddock Heights, MD. 

The Rev. Herschal Gibbs conducted a memorial service Sunday at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Shepherdstown with a private interment.

Brandon P. Waggy

Brandon Patrick Waggy, 19, of Franklin, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA, as the result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on June 27, 2003. 

Mr. Waggy was born July 9, 1983, and was the son of Dennis and Patricia Crites Waggy of Franklin. 

He was a 2001 graduate of Pendleton County High School and a 2003 graduate of Potomac State College.  He was a member of Reeds Creek United Methodist Church. 

Surviving in addition to his parents are maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Lenora Crites of Petersburg,; paternal grandmother, Pauline Waggy of Franklin; a sister, Jessica Ruth Waggy of Franklin; a brother, John Michael Waggy of Franklin; a nephew, Brett Michael Waggy of Franklin; and a fiancee, Jodie Cunningham of Glenville.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Carson Waggy. 

The Rev. Gary Phillips conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin.  Burial was in the Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.  

J. Arthur Ratliff, 84

J. Arthur Ratliff, 84, a resident of 255 windy Knoll Drive, Harrisonburg, VA died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a patient for several days.

Mr. Ratliff was born on Jan. 24, 1919, in Mozer and was the son of the late Perry M. and Lena Kesner Ratliff. 

 He was a carpenter for Lough Brothers.  He was a member of the South Mill Creek Church of the Brethren in Upper Tract and attended West Side Baptist Church. 

On Nov. 20, 1942, he married the former Elva Hedrick, who survives. 

Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and Philip E. "Phil" Davis, Harrisonburg, VA; two grandsons, Michael A. Davis and wife, Donna, and their Children, Philip B. and Zachary Davis, Harrisonburg, VA, and Brian E. and wife, Patricia, and their children, Taylor and Tucker Davis, Harrisonburg, VA; one brother, Homer Ratliff, Baltimore, MD; five sisters, Ersley Whetzel and Hazel Simmons, both of Franklin, Vada Mallow, Upper Tract, Nancy Mongold, Rough Run and Genevive May, Arthur. 

Mr. Ratliff was preceded in death by three brothers, Chaney, Olin, and Glenn Ratliff; and a sister, Ethel Alt.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Charles P. Anderson, Jr., officiating. Burial followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Richard Lee Day, 72

Richard Lee Day, 72, passed away Friday, June 27, 2003, at home.  A native of Onego, he had been a peninsula resident for 50 years. 

Mr. Day was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.  He worked as a water works operator for Newport News Waterworks.  Lee Hall Station.  He retired civil service, Bethel Manor Station, when operated by Fort Monroe.  He was of the Protestant faith. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; daughter; Gail; grandson, Jamie; and a brother, Norman. 

He is survived by his brother, E. Fred Day of Warren, OH, and several nieces and nephews.  

A graveside funeral service was conducted 10 a.m. Thursday in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, VA, with Rev. Richard R. Helveston officiating. 

The family requests memorials take the form of contributions to the SPCA, 523 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA  23601.

Arrangements were in the care of the Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, Hampton, VA.  

Kerlin Ord Judy

Kerlin Ord Judy, 90, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Judy was born Sept. 29, 1912, in Circleville and was a son of the late William A. Judy and Ona Lambert Judy.

He graduated from Circleville High School, West Virginia University, and St. John's Academy Alumni of Pendleton County.  Following Mr. Judy's graduation from West Virginia University, he served 19 years as vocational agriculture teacher in Hurricane and Martinsburg.  He then joined the A.I.D., "Agency for International Development," a Department of the Department of State and retired after 22 years of service.  He served for 20 years in many countries, including Bangladesh, South Korea, Zambia, Vietnam and The Philippines.  He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist church in Harrisonburg, VA, and the adult Sunday school class.  He was also a member of Belmont Ruritan Club, NARFE and AARP.

His first wife, Ruth Nelson Judy, preceded him in death March 1, 1996. 

He is survived by his wife, Cherry Loares Judy of Harrisonburg, VA; a daughter, Barbara Ann Bowes of Seattle, WA; three sons, Jerry Judy and his wife, Sandy of Shippensburg, PA, Reed Judy and his wife, Becky of Bridgeport, and William Judy and his wife Ellen of Richmond, VA; a sister, Mary Leah Cochran of Huntington; a brother, Keith Judy of Circleville; and nine grandchildren. 

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bard Judy and Norris Judy. 

The Rev. Samuel R. Janzen conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Monday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.  A memorial service was held at the Otterbein United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glen Langston officiating.  

Memorial contributions may be made to the Circleville United Methodist Church.    

Josie Pauline Morley, 82

Josie Pauline Morley, 82, a resident of Davie, FL, since 1959, died Monday, June 23, 2003. 

Mrs Morley was born August 2, 1920, in Pendleton County, and was the daughter of the late Rock P. Auville and Florida Hedrick Auville.

Her first husband, Otis Vandevander, and her second husband, Harold Morley, preceded her in death.  Also preceding her in death was a brother, Paul Auville. 

She graduated from Circleville High School.  Upon moving to Florida, she retired from the Broward county Public Utilities after 20 years.

Surviving are one daughter, Jane Wolverton, and husband, Alan of Davie FL; two sons,Christopher Morley and wife, Terri of Margate, FL, and Emory Vandevander and wife, Barbara of Tampa, FL; two sisters, Pauline Stump of Moorefield and Dorsaleen Stump of Petersburg; seven grandchildren ; and seven great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held Friday, June 25, at 11:00 a.m. at Fred Hunter's funeral Home in Davie, FL.  Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens South. 

Bertha V. Johnson, 81

Bertha Virginia Simmons Johnson, 81, of Staunton, VA, died Friday, July 4, 2003, at the Augusta Medical Center. 

Mrs. Johnson was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Pendleton county and was the daughter of the late David Loy and Ollie Smith Simmons. 

She was retired from the Leggett's Department Store with 30 years of service as a sales clerk.  She was a member of the VFW Post No. 2216 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Staunton Church of the Brethren. 

She married Roy G. Johnson, who preceded her in death. 

Surviving are a son, Dale Harman of West Augusta; and a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. 

The Rev. Harold "Pete" Campbell conducted a graveside funeral 2 p.m. Monday in the Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. 

Henry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
