Warren C. Boyers, 79

Warren Coolidge Boyers, 79, of Bridgewater, VA, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at his home. 

Mr. Boyers was born March 12, 1924, and was the son of the late Otho D. and Ollie Lawson Boyers. 

He was employed by W.A. Hartman Memorials and worked at the Harrisonburg Auto Auction.  He served in the US Army during World War II and was a member of the Mount Clinton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9872.  He attended the Valley Temple Church in Harrisonburg, VA.  

On Dec. 24, 1946, he married Ruby L. Shifflett, who survives. 

Also surviving are three daughters, Betty Baldwin of Brandywine, and Jo An Shull and Linda Boyers, both of Bridgewater, VA; two sons, Warren C. "Bub" Boyers, Jr., of Mount Solon, VA and Otho "Sonny" Boyers of Harrisonburg, VA; four sisters Agnes Smith and Maxine Thomas, both of Harrisonburg, VA, Mildred Davis of Lacey Spring, VA, and Janet Blosser of Pennsylvania; a grandson who was raised in the home, Billy "Binky" Boyers of Harrisonburg, VA, 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.  

The Revs. Arnold D. Repass and Randall C. Shull conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, VA.  Burial followed at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, VA.

Clarence Stone, Sr., 81 

Clarence R. Stone, Sr., 81, of Cumberland, MD, formerly of Franklin, died SAturday, June 14, 2003, at Memorial Hospital. 

Mr. Stone was born May 22, 1922, in Cave and was the son of the late Pinckney and Margaret Stone.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret J. Stone, Nov. 8, 2001. 

He was a member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church.  He retired from the Kelly Springfield Corporation after 38 years of service and was a former buss driver for the Allegany County School System.  He was a US Army veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific.  While in the Army he was attached to McArthur's Headquarters in Japan where he was a driver during the surrender of the Japanese in Tokyo Bay. 

Surviving are one daughter, Patricia L. Shepley and husband, Timothy, Lawrenceville, GA; one son, Clarence R. Stone, Jr., and wife, Gloria, Flemington, NJ; one sister, Myrtle Lantz and husband, Vernon, Franklin; four grandchildren, Jessica Shepley, Matthew Stone, Lauren Stone and Rachel Stone; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., in Cumberland, MD, with the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna officiating.

Interment was in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery in Rocky Gap, Flintstone, MD, with military honors accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.   

Mervin W. Kimble

Mervin W. Kimble, 80, of Upper Tract, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Kimble was born Feb. 21, 1923, at Brushy Run and was the son of the late Alfred Vincent Kimble and Lucinda Ellen Self Kimble. 

He was a farmer and had worked on the pipeline for several years.  He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints.  

On Dec. 25, 1941, he married Velma Pearl Alt Kimble, who preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1989. 

On Jan. 1, 1996, he married Nora Turner Kimble, who survives.  

Also surviving are five daughters, Sandra Borror and Bonnie Holloway, both of Upper Tract, Jane Huffman and Kathy Hartman, both of Franklin, and Sharon Scott of Brandywine; four sons, Dr. J. Stephen Kimble of Petersburg, Richard Kimble of Upper Tract, Roger  Kimble of Franklin and Ronnie Kimble of Brandywine; one foster daughter, Joyce George of Upper Tract; four stepson, Charles Turner, Dennis Turner, Bradley Turner and Joey Turner, all of Upper Tract; one step daughter, Kathy Kimble of Franklin; two sisters, Alice Ketterman of Maysville and Zola Swick of Petersburg; two half brothers, John A. Kimble of Franklin and Kennie Kimble of Upper Tract, 37 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.   

 Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Franklin Ward, with Bishop David Bradley and Bishop David Hartman officiating. 

Burial will be at the Kile Cemetery at Upper Tract.  

Friends may call at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin after 9:00 Wednesday.  The family received friends 6;00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral Home. 

Memorials may be made to a chairty of choice.

Daisy V. Thorne, 85

 Daisy Virginia Thorne, 86, of Petersburg, died Friday, June 27, 2003, at Grant County Nursing Home, where she had lived since June 27, 1994.

Mrs. Thorne was born June 18, 1918, in Rough Run and was a daughter of the late Jesse Mongold and Ida Catherine Ours Mongold. 

She and her husband owned and operated Thorne's Grocery in Dorcas for several years.  She was a member of the Rough Run Church of the Brethren. 

Her husband, Luther J. Thorne, preceded her in death Feb. 13, 1990. 

She is survived by two sons, Clyde T. Thorne and Leland Thorne, both of Petersburg; a sister, Velma Ayers of Grant county Nursing Home, Petersburg; a brother, Albert Mongold of Greenfield, OH; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one step-grandson; and one great-great-grandson. 

Pastor Calvin S. Redman conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Monday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was in the Thorne Family cemetery in Rough Run.

Gay Armentrout

Gay Armentrout, 83, of Loraine, OH, died Saturday, June 28, 2003, in Lorain Specialty Hospital, following a brief illness. 

Mrs. Armentrout was born Jan. 13, 1920, in Harman and was a daughter of the late Walter and Mary Jane (Judy) Yokum.

She had lived in Loraine since June of 1953.  She had worked for the former Kresge's Dime Store, the former Jupiter Department Store, and the former Muir's Drug Store in Loraine, OH, for over 20 years.  She was a member of the Lorain Baptist Church, where she had been a Sunday School Teacher and Hostess for many years.  She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and her flower beds and being outdoors.  She also enjoyed visiting with her family and friends. 

She is survived by one daughter, Wilma Morton of Loraine, OH; one grandson and his wife, Bob and Sandra Morton of Lorain, OH; one great-grandson, Brandon Morton of Lorain, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Armentrout in 1998, after 51 years of marriage; one brother, Walter G. Yokum and one sister Nellie Meadows.  

The funeral service was conducted at 12:00 p.m. at the Lorain Baptist Church, Lorain, OH, with the Rev. Donnie Yates of Indiana officiating.  Burial followed in the Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, Avon, OH.

Nina Francis Spiggle, 93

Nina Francis Spiggle, 93, of Aurora, a resident of the Lions Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland, MD, died January 11, 2003, in Cumberland, MD. 

Born Dec. 10, 1909, in Aurora, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Polly Spiggle.  She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Floyd and Wayne; and four sisters, Marjorie, Kathleen, Bess and Lorena.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

A graduate of Aurora High School she earned her bachelor's degree in home economics from West Virginia University, Morgantown.  She began her career in an emergency program of nutrition training in the mining areas of her native state.  She became a home demonstration agent in Logan County and served in Pendleton, Hampshire, Grant, Marshall and Upshur.  During that time, she was an innovator in the rural electrification movement and was a 4-H leader.  Her extension service career included 11 years as home demonstration agent in Cumberland County, NJ.  

She retired in 1966 after 32 years of service, and was active in the volunteer staff at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winchester, VA. 

She is survived by four nephews and their families , Patrick Bowman, Bill Bowles, and Wayne and George Spiggle. 

A "celebration and remembrance of life" was held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Aurora, on Friday, April 25, at 11 a.m., with Pastor James Utt officiating.  Following the service there was a graveside inhumation of ashes at St. Paul's Cemetery. 

Charlie Meadows, Sr., 76

Charlie A. Meadows, Sr., 76, formerly of Franklin passed away a year ago July 23, 2003 at hiws residence in the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, OH. 

A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, July 11, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ruddle Cmeetery located at Buffalo Hill Road and Hammer Mill Road, Franklin. 

Military honor service was held July 26, 2002, at the Ohio Veterans Home with a closing of John Denver's song "Take Me Home Country Roads."  Cremation followed and burial will be granted in Franklin as his final wish. 

Born July 24, 1925, in Ruddle, he was the son of the late David and Emma Meadows.  

Corporal Meadows served in the Army during WWII and the Korean War from 1945 to 1953. 

He married Guilda Simmons. 

He drove the Franklin Oil  company trucks.  In 1959, he moved to Ohio and had resided in Vermilion, OH, since 1953.  He retired as an inspector from the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant in 1987 after 28 years.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, flea markets, playing guitar, and visiting West Virginia. 

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Guilda Meadows of Vermilion, OH, (who is the daughter of Virgie Simmons of Franklin); four daughters, Mary Lou (Thural) Williams, Jr. of Tampa, FL, Cindy (Wayne) Traster of Lorain, OH, Wanda Adkins of Perrysburg, OH, and Kathy Logdon of Huron, OH; a son Charlie (Carol) Meadows, Jr., of Norwalk, OH, nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lona Ruddle of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Annie Armentrout; and three brothers, Grayson, Carl and Hubert, all formerly of the Franklin area.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ruddle Cemetery Fund. 

Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, will be handling memorial arrangements. 

George Edwin McLain, Jr.
George Edwin McLain, JR., 70, of Brandywine, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at his home.

Mr. McLain was born May 26, 1933, in Mount Gilead, OH, and was the son of the late George Edwin McLain, Sr., and Fannie Chase McLain.

He was employed at Hartman’s Furniture Store, Brandywine Cablevision, Wampler Longacre, and was a television repairman.  He was a member of the Marengo, OH, American Legion Post, and was a veteran, having served in the Armed Reserves during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. McLain was Baptist by faith and attended the Brandywine Baptist Church.

On Aug. 23, 1968, he married Elva Jean Hoover, who preceded him in death Sept. 25, 1990.

He is survived by two daughters, Ann Weese and Pam Hoover, both of Brandywine; two sons, John McLain of Marion, OH, and Keith McLain of Nevada, OH; a sister, Jane Ayers of Mount Gilead, OH; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a fiancee, Delores Thompson of Brandywine.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one grandchild.

Pastor Tracy Fletcher conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Brandywine Baptist Church. Burial was at Pine Hill Cemetery at Brandywine with military graveside services conducted by members of the Marengo, Ohio American Legion Post.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.
