Ruth Hottinger, 90

Ruth Rachel Hottinger, 90, formerly of Romney died June 22, 2011, at Phelps Memorial Hospital, Sleepy Hollow, NY.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1920, in Ft. Seybert and was the daughter of the late Scott and Bessie (Wilfong) Ritchie.

Mrs. Hottinger moved to Romney in 1964 from Brandywine. She was a member of the Romney First United Methodist Church, where she served many years on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the GFWC and the American Legion Hampshire Post #91 Ladies Auxiliary, all of Romney, and volunteered at the Burlington United Methodist Family services. Before transferring her membership to the OES Romney Chapter #84 she had been Past Worthy Matron of the OES in Franklin.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Sharples of Westbrook, CT, and Loretta J. Hottinger of Mt. Vernon, NY; two brothers, Harlan Ritchie of Broadway, VA, and Berlin Ritchie of Lincolnton, NC; six sisters, Mildred Briggs of Fairfax, VA, Erma May of Broadway, VA, Leona Hottinger of Brandywine, Arlene Kyger of Midway Park, NC, and Anna Lee Burkholder and Wanda Simmers, both of Harrisonburg, VA; and three grandchildren, Jeffery M. Davis, II, of Westbrook, CT, Russell Detres of Mt. Vernon, NY, and Katharine Palmer of Briarcliff Manor, NY.

officiating. The O.E.S. Romney chapter #84 conducted a service prior to the funeral. Interment was at the Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.

Gene Russell Smith, 83, formerly of Berrytown near Elkton, VA, passed away June 21, 2011, at Harrisonburg Health & Rehabilitation Center, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Iowa and was the son of the late Frank Leslie and Jennie Pearl Sexton Smith.

Mr. Smith was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He was a former tractor-trailer driver. He enjoyed bluegrass music, volunteering with the forest service, camping and overseeing the Brandywine campground.

Surviving are three step-daughters, Janet Dean and husband, Larry, Charlotte Shifflett and Carol J. Dean and husband, Delta, all of Elkton, VA; 14 step grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by four step-sons, Joseph, Lionel, Wayne and Rondall Shifflett; and stepgrandson, Keith Dean.

A funeral service was held Friday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton, VA, with Pastor Carter Dean officiating. Burial folowed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg, VA, with military rites by the Gooden Brothers, VFW Post 9292.

Mrs. Puckett was born on March 14, 1965, in Williamsport, PA, and was a daughter of Charles Martin and Mary Ann (Smith) Lichter of Montoursville, PA.

She was employed at Linville-Edom Elementary School as the bookkeeper/secretary. She was very blessed to have known the students, families and co-workers. She enjoyed making jewelry and motorcycle riding. She was a member of First Presbyterian on the Square in Harrisonburg, VA.

Also surviving are three sons, Adam (22) of North Carolina, Kyle (19) and Tyler (18), both of Harrisonburg, VA; a grandmother, Marion Whetzel of Williamsport, PA; a brother Robert D. Lichter and wife, Jeanette of New York; two sisters, Linda Dingler and husband, John Fritz of Allentown, PA, and Tracey Martinez and husband, Jay of Montoursville, PA; three nieces; and eight nephews.

The Rev. John Sloop will conduct a memorial service on Friday at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church on the Square.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA.
