Rev. T. Schmucker

Rev. Frederick Thomas Schmucker, 76, of Cape Girardeau, passed away June 14, 2006, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

Born November 10, 1929, in Canton, OH, son of the late John Luther and Ethel Thomas Schmucker.  

On May 31, 1997 he married Margaret McCabe, who survives. 

He was a graduate of Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, both in Ohio, where he also served in the Naval Reserves. 

He served as a parish pastor, hospital chaplain, and clinical pastoral education (CPE) supervisor for more than 50 years.  He also served as an advisory board member for Lutheran Family and Children’s Services of Southeast Missouri. 

Following retirement, he served as an E.L.C.A. missionary to Vilnius, Lithuania, and sponsored a Lithuanian seminary student at Eden Seminary in St. Louis.

Rev. Schmucker was a board member of the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, active in the local chapters of the Experimental Aircraft Association and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Rev. Schmucker was also a licensed amateur HAM radio operator.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are a sister, Madeline Thoss; a sister-in-law Eleanor Smith Schmucker; a brother, Derek Mumford of Little Rock, AR, mother-in-law, Rose McCabe; and six children from a previous marriage, Elizabeth Schmucker of San Antonio, TX; Rebecca Schmucker, wife of Robert Ringenberger of New York City, NY; Madelyn Schmucker, wife of Alan Sample of Cape Girardeau; Helen Schmucker, wife of Stephen Todd Spencer of Oak Park, IL; Frederick Schmucker, Jr. and his wife Mary Beth Novy Schmucker of Bloomington, IN; and Margaret Schmucker of Austin, TX, seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers David Schmucker and Brian Mumford.

Friends and relatives may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2002 at McCombs Funeral Home of Cape Girardeau.

Services were held June 17, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Cape Girardeau, MO with former CPE students Father Steve Humphries and Father Jim Daugherty officiating.

Lester Harper

Lester Harper, 77, of Franklin, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at his home on Painter’s Point.

Mr. Harper was born Aug. 8, 1928, in Moyers and was the son of the late Edward H. Harper and Phoebe Rexrode Harper.  

He was employed at Ruddle's Sawmill and by the West Virginia Department of Highways.  He was a member of Sandy Ridge Church of the Brethren.  

His wife, Norma Jean Hoover Harper, preceded him in death on June 21, 1990.  They were married Dec. 3, 955. 

He is survived by a son, Kevin Harper, and a sister, Edna J. Propst, both of Franklin.  

Pastor Danny Williams conducted the funeral Friday at the Kimble Funeral Home.  Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin. 

Betty J. Harper

Betty Jane Harper, 73, of Riverton, died June 27, 2006, in Winchester Medial Center at Winchester, VA.

Born July 10, 1932, at Macksville, she was the daughter of the late Baxter Hedrick and Artie Miller Hedrick.

Mrs. harper was a member of High Rock United Methodist church. 

Her husband of 55 years, B. Wright Harper, survives. 

Surviving in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Rebecca Funk of Rowlesburg and Lucy Kisamore of Riverton; two sons, Merlin Harper and Berlin Harper, both of Seneca Rocks; one sister, Ella Griffith of Arlington, VA; five brothers, Hansel Hedrick and Joe Hedrick both of Seneca Rocks, Hugh Hedrick and Dice Hedrick, both of Coshocton, Ohio, the Rev. Roy Hedrick of Harrisonburg, VA, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one brother, Donnie Hedrick; one half brother, Guy Hedrick; one sister, Hazel Hedrick; and two half sisters, Elizabeth Alander and Mabel Harper.

Funeral services, under the direction of Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, were incomplete at press time.  

Dorothy M. VanMeter

Dorothy Marie VanMeter, 77, of Upper Tract, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

She was born Dec. 5, 1928, in Upper Tract, and was a daughter of the late Hughie Helmick and Nina Alt Helmick.

She had worked at Franklin Garment Company and Hanover Shoe Company and was a member of Brushy Run Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lester William VanMeter, on March 27, 1988, and by her second husband, Lossie VanMeter, on April 19, 2006.

she is survived by four sons, Lester David VanMeter of Petersburg, and Ronnie VanMeter, Donnie VanMeter and Michael T. VanMeter, all of Upper Tract; two grandsons, whom she raised, Lester D. VanMeter and Michael L. VanMeter of Upper Tract; a niece, whom she raised, Cathy Pence of Franklin; three stepsons; two stepdaughters; three sisters, Rose Hines and Wanda Brill, both of Petersburg, and Katherine VanMeter of Burlington; one brother, Jim Helmick of Petersburg; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin. Burial was at Kline Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Vertura M. Hammer

Vertura M. Hammer, 77, of McDowell, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA.

Mrs. Hammer was born July 14, 1928, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was the daughter of the late Oscar and Grace Wooddell Malcom.

She was a homemaker and was employed at Aileen Inc. for a number of years. She was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church, the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary and the Home Demonstration Club.

Her husband, John David Hammer, preceded her in death Feb. 24, 2002.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Hammer of McDowell, VA; and a son, John M. Hammer and wife, Kim of McDowell; two grandchildren, J.B. Hammer of McDowell, VA, and Crystal Lindsay of Staunton, VA; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Patricia Lindsay; a sister-in-law, Anna Lee Pullin of Staunton, VA; and two nephews; three great-nephews; and many special friends. 

The Rev. Dave Boger conducted the funeral Tuesday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA. Burial was in the McKendree Cemetery.

Charles Rinaldi, 42

Charles William Rinaldi,, 42, of Adamstown, MD, died June 22, 2006, in Frederick County Hospital of complications after emergency surgery. 

Born Jan. 5, 1964, in Silver spring, MD, he was the son of Charles Edward Rinaldi and JoAnn Ruddle Rinaldi. 

Mr. Rinaldi graduated from Magruder High School in Rockville, MD, and completed a year of study at Montogomery College.  For 20 years, he was employed by Super Giant Food Corporation. 

He spent many Christmas vacations and spring breaks from school, as well as summer vacations, in Franklin High on his list of local attractions was the Treasure Mountain Festival.  Talking with people, knowing them and keeping touch will all, both far and near, were important to him.  HIs min was a storehouse of knowledge of history facts.  

In his church circle, he was noted for his cooking skills of pasta dishes and Jell-O cakes, which he shared at fellowship lunches. 

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Victoria Alten of Cornwallisville, NY, and Elizabeth Burdick of Barnesville, MD; two nieces, Olivia and Gabriella Burdick; four aunts, Helen Ruddle McGhee of Rockville, MD, Nancy Ruddle Walker of Vienna, VA and Mary Lee and Carolyn Ruddle, both of Franklin; three uncles, Newton Ruddle of Franklin, Maurice Ruddle of Bassett, VA, and Joe Rinaldi of Wolfsboro, NH.  

The celebration of his life was on June 24 at Millian Memorial United Methodist Church, Rockville, MD, with Reverend Connie Paulson of Millian Memorial and Rev. Linda Healy of Buckeystown United Methodist officiating.  

"Remembering Charles" was delivered by his sister, Elizabeth Burdick, and cousins, Dan Walker and Dr. John Richard.  Several friends and family members also witnessed to his life.  He was lovingly carried to his rest in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Springs, MD. 

Danny T. Warner, 54

Danny Thomas Warner, 54, of Cherry Grove died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Edinburg, VA.

Mr. Warner was born July 31, 1951, in Petersburg and was the son of Cynthia Jane Nelson Warner of Cherry Grove and the late Arvil William Warner.

He was a logger, landscaper and trucker. He graduated from Circleville High School in 1970 and graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in landscape engineering in 1974. He was a member of Circleville Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Heather Warner of Montrose; a son, Keynon Warner of Houston, TX; two sisters, Teresa L. Mauzy of Churchville, VA, and Lois Ann Warner of Cherry Grove, and four brothers, Charles Warner of Franklin, Allen Warner of Cherry Grove, Frank Warner of Caldwell, and Carl Warner of Circleville.

The Rev. Bill Cox conducted the funeral Saturday in the chapel of the Basagic funeral Home in Franklin. Burial wa in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.
