Norman R. Simmons Sr., 68

Norman Richard "Bud" Simmons Sr., 68, of Petersburg died Saturday, June 23, 2007, at his residence.

Mr. Simmons was born Oct. 16, 1938, in Reeds Creek and was the son of the late Lon J. Simmons and Hazel V. Kimble Simmons.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1957. He worked for Kelley Springfield Tire Company in Cumberland, MD,. for more than 23 years and retired from Petersburg Oil Company in 2004.

He was a member of the Grove Street United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

On Oct. 20, 1962, he married JoAnn Harman Simmons, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Norman R. "Buddy" Simmons Jr., and wife Kristal of Petersburg.; two daughters, Teresha "Terri" Woods and husband, Denny of Dorcas, and Lisa Harman and husabnd, Kent of Arthur, a sister, Stella Grace Weatherholtz of Franklin; three brothers, Joe Vernon Simmons of Petersburg, Mahlon Simmons of Mount Airy, MD, and Troy L. Simmons of Franklin, and 10 grandchildren.

The Revs. William R. Brown and Richard L. Longbon conducted the funeral  Tuesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial with military service by the Petersburg VFW Post No. 6454 and JROTC will be in the Kline Cemetery in Kline.

Jimmy G. Bennett, 51

Jimmy Gary Bennett, 51, of Maysville, died Friday, June 22, 2007, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. 

He was born March 19, 1956, in Keyser and was the son of the late Robert Lee Bennett and Maxine (Skaggs) Bennett Cosner. 

Mr. Bennett served in the United States Navy during Viet Nam. 

His wife, Annette VAnce Bennett, survives. 

Also surviving are four sons, Ronald A. Bennett of Sugar Grove, Jeremy Simmons of Petersburg, Michael Fortino of Kesyer and Steven Fortino of Martinsburg; four daughters, Dena Fortino and Kara Fortino, both of Fort Story, VA, and Alexandria Fortino and Veronica Fortino both of Maysville; four sisters, Rose Mary Bennett of Wilsonville, OR, Judy Ann Shultz of Hedgesville, Dina Sue Bennett of Port Orange, FL, and Nola Maxine Lawrence of Middletown, CT; three brothers: Michael Lee Bennett of Wheelersburg, OH, and Franklin Eugene Bennett and David H. Bennett, both of Maysville; a half brother Rev. Manuel "Buddy" Bennett of Milton, FL; and nine grandchildren, including Dylan Ray.

AT his request, his body was cremated and memorial services were held Sunday at the Cornerstone Family Fellowship, Maysville, with Revs. Steve Landis, Lynn Durbin and Joseph Eversole officiating.  A military graveside service was held Wednesday at the Riggleman Cemetery, Cabins, byt the Petersburg  VFW Post 6454 and JROTC.  

Roy Gard Mallow, 89, of Riverton died Sunday, June 24, 2007, at Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg.

Mr. Mallow was born Feb. 10, 1918, in Simoda and was the son of the late Harman M. Mallow and Vernie Mallow Mallow.

He attended Mallow School and graduated as valedictorian from Circleville High School in 1937. He had retired from Germany Valley Lime Company, where he worked in weights and scales and was a farmer. He was a member of Riverton United Methodist Church.

On March 20, 1940, he married Edith Dice, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Shirley Mae Harper and husband, Dale of Riverton, a son, Paul G. Mallow and wife, Mae of Franklin; a sister, Gae Dice of Riverton, W.Va., two grandchildren, Sandy Waldron and Mark Dale Harper; one step-grandchild, Cindy Moyers; four great-grandchildren, Adrianna Michelle Waldron, Kelsey Lynn Harper and Kensey Marklyn Harper; and three step-great-grandchildren, Tanner Gregory Moyers, Gracie Kaye Moyers and lily Faith Moyers.  .

The Rev. Barbara Rexroad conducted the funeral Wednesday in the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was in the Dice Cemetery in Riverton.

Jerry Robert Hartman, 73, of Cherry Grove died Monday, June 25, 2007, at his residence.

Mr. Hartman was born March 1, 1934, in Circleville and was the son of the late Elemuel Ake Hartman and Mona Tena Wimer Hartman.

He attended Circleville High School and worked for Hanover Shoe from 1987 to 1993. He retired in 1985 as owner of Hartman’s Store, Post Office and Gas Station in Cherry Grove.  He was of the Pentecostal faith.

On March 7, 1976, he married Ellen Louise Paugh, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Joshua Paul Hartman and wife, Julie of Cherry Grove and Jacob Daniel Hartman and wife, Harmini of Sun Prairie, WI; four sisters, Irene C. Hahn of Baltimore, MD, Betty Jo Connelly of Falls Church, VA, Mary V. Elyard of Orlando, FL, and Joan Lambert of Riverton; three brothers, Raymond W. "Jack" Hartman of Baltimore, MD, Junior A. Hartman of Monterey, VA, and Jimmie G. Hartman of Apache Junction, AZ, and one grandson, Kristopher Scott McLaughlin.

Pastor Richard Fosdick will conduct the funeral today at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin, W.Va.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Minnie V. Hoover, 92, of Franklin, died Friday, June 22, 2007, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Hoover was born May 13, 1915, in Moyers and was the daughter of the late Oliver Propst and Minnie Propst Propst.

She had worked at Franklin Garment Company and Hanover Shoe Company. She was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church.

On Nov. 18, 1939, she married Ona "Virgil" Hoover; he preceded her in death May 25, 1995.

Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Ann Curran of Washington, DC, Maxine Rader of Moyers and Marilyn Edwards of Pembrooke, VA; three sons, Ona Dale "Jim" Hoover and Milton Keith Hoover, both of Franklin, W.Va., and Rodney Layne Hoover of Moyers, W.Va., 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and a special friend, Peggy Jo Pitsenbarger of Franklin. 

She was also preceded in death by one son, one daughter, one brother and one sister. .

Pastor Calvin Bailey conducted the funeral Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Harry W. Raines

Harry Wayne Raines, 60, of Riverton died Thursday, June 21, 2007, at his home after a 2-year battle with lung cancer.

Mr. Raines was born Nov. 6, 1946, in Cherry Grove and was a son of Mildred L. Brown Raines of Circleville and the late Harry Raines.

He graduated from Circleville High School in 1966 and was a member of North Fork Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was in construction/concrete

His wife, Betty Louise Cook Raines, survives.

In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include a son, Jeremy Raines of Franklin; a step-daughter, Angel Goldizen of Moorefield; a step-son, Chad Hinkle of Petersburg; a sister, Lucy Elaine Vandevander of Monterey, VA; three brothers, Larry Sheldon Raines of Seneca Rocks, Dennis Lee Raines of Circleville and Harry Everly Raines of Franklin; and two grandchildren, Michaela and Larissa Raines.

The Rev. Mark McAllister conducted the funeral Saturday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton with military honors by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squad or Mountain Hospice.

Joseph W. Judy 

Joseph Wreford Judy of Richmond, VA, passed away on June 12, 2007.

Born near Franklin, W.Va. on Nov. 7, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph Walter Judy and Elizabeth Sponaugle Judy Ritchie.

The family moved to Dayton, VA in 1932. Mr. Judy graduated from Dayton High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Naval Air Force, serving from 1944 to 1946 as a combat air crewman on the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt. He graduated from Bridgewater College in 1953 and was employed as a lab technician for Merck from 1953 to 1959. In 1959, he accepted a position as a control chemist for A.H. Robins Co. and retired as Director of Quality Assurance in 1990.

Mr. Judy was a life member of the National Rifle Association and was a former member of the American Legion and the American Chemical Society.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Keller Judy.  

Also surviving are a daughter, Barbara Anne Judy of Richmond, VA; a son, James Alan Judy and his wife, Nancy, of Germantown, MD; two sisters, Madeline Freeman of Dayton, VA, Ramona Crowe of Keezletown, VA; and one brother, Raeburn Judy of Dayton, VA.

A memorial service was held Friday at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, VA  A graveside service was held Saturday at Dayton Cemetery.

Betty J. Kimble, 66, of Kearneysville, died Monday, June 25, 2007, at Shenandoah Health Village Center in Charles Town with her family present. 

She was born March 15, 1941, in Dry Fork and was the daughter of the late Edgar E. and Nela Huffman Nelson.

She was employed by the Jefferson County Board of Education  as a cook and was a member of the Jefferson County Personnel Association. She was a member of the Charles Town Order of the Eastern Star and the Charles Town Baptist Church.

On Oct. 5, 1959, she married Stearl I. Kimble, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kathy S. Lane and husband, Allen of Bunker Hil,l and Chastidy Bender and husband Mark of Kearneysville; a son, Steven I. Kimble and wife, Lisa of Middletown, MD; three sisters, Mary Smith of East Lake, OH, Doris Evans of North Carolina and Joanne Huffman of Canaan Valley; six brothers, Roscoe Nelson and Joe Nelson, Donald Nelson, Burlie (Jake) Nelson, Roy Nelson and James Nelson, all of Dry Fork; two grandchildren, Christopher Lane and Jheri LeAnn Liskey. .

Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be in the Lahmansville Cemetery in Lahmansville.

Friends called at the funeral home from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. 

Danielle M. Raines

Danielle Marie Raines, 20, of Harman, died June 17, 2007.

She was born May 25, 1987, at Elkins, a daughter of Jerry Lynn and Jennie Lou Bennett Raines of Harman.

She loved the outdoors, rode horses and hunted deer and “coon” with her friends and family. Scrapbooking was also a favorite pastime along with spending time with her cousins. During her high school days, she was homecoming queen and served as queen over Autumn on the Dryfork. She was editor of the Harman High School yearbook and graduated in 2005. She was a former member of Harman High Climber 4-H Club and a member of Randolph County Regional Riding Club.

Also surviving are paternal grandparents, Jerry and Lorraine Raines of Onego; maternal grandparents, Russ and Jean Arbogast of Harman and the late Herman L. Bennett of Onego; one aunt, Jenny and Dale Tingler of Onego; three uncles, Casey and Jennifer Raines and David and Grace Bennett, all of Onego, and Todd and Cathy Raines of Harman; loving cousins, Peyton, Katie “Bug,” Megan, Dawson, Cheyenne, Hannah, Lacy, Chris, CJ and Jessica; and her special pet dog, “Sissy.”

Funeral services were held June 21, at the Dry Fork Assembly of God Church  with the Rev. Ric Lewellen officiating. Interment followed in the Raines Family Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
