Dr. Charles J. Sites, 89,Franklin, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Rockingham Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Dr. Sites was born July 2, 1911, in Upper Tract and was the son of the late James and Sue Ella Judy Sites.

He was a member of the Men of the Mountain at West Virginia University, where he was a wrestler. He received his medical degree in 1940 from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, and completed his internship in general practice at the Pittsburgh Medical Center. During World War II, he served as Captain in the Medical Army Corps of Engineers No. 333.

Dr. Sites was a general practitioner in Franklin and retired at the age of 85. During bad weather or when patients were too ill to travel, he traveledby horseback or skis to reach them. He was a health officer for the Pendleton County Health Department, a member of the South Branch Medical Society and had been a member of the West Virginia State Medical Association since 1947. In 1995, he was named rural physician of the year by the association.

He was a lifetime member of the Melvin Jones Fellow of the Franklin Lions Club. He was also a member of the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge, the Pendleton Masonic Lodge No. 144 A.F.&A.M., the Masons of 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Wheeling, a member of the Osiris Shrine Temple at Wheeling and the Valley Shrine Club in Harrisonburg, VA. He was a member of the Upper Tract Presbyterian Church and attended the Franklin Presbyterian Church. He loved golfing and horseback riding.

On Dec. 31, 1945, he married Mary Lou Aulde, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Charles J. Sites, Jr., Franklin; a daughter, Susan Malpass, Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Betty Harman, Westminister, MD, and Margaret Ridder, Shepherdstown; and a grandson, Clark Malpass, Raleigh, NC.

Dr. Richard Young conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Franklin Presbyterian Church. Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin with graveside rites by the Pendleton Masonic Lodge No. 144.

Carl B. Teter, age 75, Seneca Rocks, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg. He had been in declining health for the past several months

Mr. Teter was born on Timber Ridge at Onego on March 22, 1926, the youngest son of the late Floyd and Sarah Pallie Harper Teter.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army from 1944-1952, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elkins, American Legion, Elkins, and the Seneca United Methodist church, in Onego.

On November 9, 1947, in Harman, he was united in marriage to Joan Lois Roy, who survives at Seneca Rocks.

Mr. Teter is also survived by three daughters, Carolyn Joan an dher husband, Charles L. Church, Valley Bend, Vickie Sue and her husband, Gary A. Crosston, Elkins, and Carlotta Jill and her husband, Gregory L. Brown, Seneca Rocks; one grandson, Kory Cullen "KC" Crosston, Elkins; and two granddaughters, SaraJo Louise Brown and Bethany Johanna Brown, Seneca Rocks; one brother, Guy Teter, Seneca Rocks,; three sisters, Zernie Teter, Onego, Hicel Roy and Joy Hedrick, both of Elkins and also a special God daughter, Lorraine Louise Kimble, Onego; and several other nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Brook and Delmer Teter, and four sisters Mabel "Doll" Harman, Louise Kimble, Cleda Teter and Mamie Teter.

The Rev. Marvin Frankhouser and the Rev. Barbara Rexrode conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at the Seneca United Methodist Church in Onego. Burial was at the Kimble family cemetery, Onego.

Memorials may be made to the Pendleton County Rescue Squad.

Lester B. Propst, Sr., 85, Moyers, died Friday, June 22, 2001 at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin.

Mr. Propst was born June 9, 1916, in Moyers and was the son of the late Sylvester and Sarah A. Bodkin Propst.

He was a farmer, a cream truck driver for Potomac Creamery for 19 years and a watchman for the Hanover Shoe Company for 11 years until retiring.

Mr. Propst was a member of the Thorn Chapel Church of the Brethren, where he began teaching Sunday school at the age of 12 and taught for more than 70 years. He also served as church trustee, treasurer and clerk of Crummett's Run congregation.

On April 24, 1943, he married Mary Elizabeth Sponaugle, who survives.

He is also survived by a son, Lester B. Propst, Jr., and his companion, Debbie Cayton, both of Franklin.

He was also preceded in death by one infant brother.

The Rev. Jerry Smith conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Blue Grass Cemetery in Blue Grass, VA.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pendleton Rescue Squad or the Pendleton Nursing Home.

June Marie Johnson, 59, Hyattsville, MD, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Washington Adventist Hospital.

Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 30, 1942, in Seat Pleasant, MD, and was a daughter of the late Roland Bell and Myrtle Rohrer.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Rodney Johnson, Circleville; one daughter, Tammie O'Brien,Hyattsville, MD; one sister, Pauline Wagner, Maryland; and one grandson, Michael O'Brien.

The Rev. Mark McAllester conducted the graveside service at 1 p.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Basagic Funeral Home of Franklin was in charge of the arrangements.

Mamie Jane Hill, 85, Harrisonburg, VA, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since last Saturday.

Mrs. Hill was born August 28, 1915, in Sugar Grove and was the daughter of the late Jacob Amby and Laura Belle, Losh Grogg.

She moved to Harrisonburg, VA, when she was 12 and was a member of West Side Baptist Church and active with her Sunday school class. She retired after 26 years at Metro Pants and was a member of the Broadway-Timberville Senior Citizens Group.

Mrs. Hill was involved in all kinds of arts and crafts and was very proud of her needlework, which was displayed at many craft shows. She loved her yard and flowers and was a mom to many kids in the neighborhood.

On Oct. 26, 1935, she married Willard E. Hill, who preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 1982.

Also preceding her in death were brothers, Floyd Paul Grogg and Minor O. Grogg; sister, Dorothy Grogg; daughters Naomi Catherine Hill, and Rachel Davis; and son, Robert Hill.

Surviving are three sons, Kenneth Hill and Carroll Hill, both of Harrisonburg, Va, and William Hill, Kezzeltown, Va; three daughters, Phyllis McDonaldson, Harrisonburg, VA, Elaine Whetzel, Linville, VA, and Margie Stroop, Singers Glen, VA; three sisters, Leafy Miller, Ruby Miller and Nancy Grogg, all of Harrisonburg VA; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. George Fletcher and O.P. Hatfield conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at the West Side Baptist Church in Harrisonburg, VA. Burial was in the Cherry Grove Methodist Cemetery in Rockingham County.

Mildred Oates Hockenberry, 85, Cincinnati, OH, formerly of Marlinton, died June 14, 2001 in Mercy Hospital Anderson in Cincinnati, OH, after a short illness.

Mrs. Hockenberry and her husband, Harry, and family were former residents of Marlinton. She was a former office manager for the State of West Virginia, a member of the Marlinton United Methodist Church, attended the Anderson Mills United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, OH, was active in Eastern Star, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Senior Citizens, and Women of the Church for many years.

Born in Romney, March 24, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Rumsey Franklin and Hannah Loy Oates.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Harry Hockenberry, and brothers, Arthur and Bob Oates, preceded her in death.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda Plybon, Cincinnati, OH; sons, Bill Hockenberry of Cumming, GA, and Bob Hockenberry, Point Pleasant; sister Zanna Frye and Hannah Mary Walters, both of Romney, brothers, Bill and Paul Oates, both of Romney, and Charles Oates, Cumberland, MD: and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Sunday afternoon, June 17, at Mountain View Cemetery in Marlinton, with a memorial service Sunday evening at the Marlinton United Methodist Church by Earl D. "Butch" Michael and the Rev. Stanley Clark.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Marlinton United Methodist Women.

Myrtle Lambert Snyder, Harrisonburg, VA, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Camelot Reahabilitation Center in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Snyder was born in Pendleton County and was the daughter of the late Isaac and Alice Wilfong Lambert.

She was a member of the First Church of the Brethren and a former member of the B.Z. Sunday school class. She was formerly employed at Troy Laundry.

On Dec. 8, 1934, she married O. Ralph Snyder, who died Nov. 10, 1976. On April 5, 1980, she married Robert E. Miller, who died Oct. 23, 1984.

Mrs. Snyder is the last surviving member of her immediate famikly. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Dr. J.D. Glick conducted a service at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens mausoleum.
