Virginia Simmons
Virginia "Kathleen" Simmons, 83, of Brandywine, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Avante Nursing Home in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Simmons was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Black Oak, MD, and was the daughter of the late Eston M. Kile and Lucinda Edith Kimble Kile.

She retired as a cook from Brandywine Elementary School and was a member of First Baptist Church in Brandywine.

On May 2, 1941, she married Ralph H. Simmons, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Walter R. Simmons of Brandywine and Jerry K. Simmons of Greenwood, SC; three sisters, Evelyn Kesner of Dayton, VA, and Mildred Kimble and Shirley Kile, both of Upper Tract; three brothers, Reginald Kile of Franklin and Harlan and Bunis Kile, both of Upper Tract; and five grandchildren, Chris, Jason, Kylene, Nicholas and Brett.

She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Michael Adam Simmons; two brothers, Keith Kile and Herald Kile; and one sister, Maxine Mowery.

The Rev. Tracey Fletcher conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at Cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract.

Evelyn Mae Campbell, 91
Evelyn Mae Campbell, 91, of Franklin, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Campbell was born Oct. 19, 1911, at Owosso, MI, and was the daughter of the late Burton Wier and Sarah Garrison Wier.

She and her husband worked in Jewelry retail sales in Michigan from 1959-1996 before retiring to Bradenton, FL, and then moving to Franklin.

She is survived by her husband, Earl A. Campbell.

Also surviving are one daughter, Barbara Arnold of Athens, GA; one son, Thomas E. Campbell of Franklin; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Campbell was cremated.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

C. Elaine Caplinger, 82
C. Elaine Caplinger, 82, of Dayton, VA, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hopstial in Harrisonburg, VA, where she had been a patient for the past week.

Mrs. Caplinger was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Fort Seybert and was a daughter of the late Grover and Sarah Nesselrodt Hartman.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren.

On Jan. 10, 1946, she married Guy F. Caplinger, who survives.

Also surviving are five daughters, Sue Harman, Linda Caplinger, Sarah Painter and Sandy Joseph, all of Dayton, VA, and Sylvia Teter of Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Martha Arey of Dayton, VA, and Betty Propst of Texas; a brother, Leland Nesselrodt of Las Vegas, NV; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The Revs. Paul Crumley and Bill Garber conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren. Burial followed at the Clover Hill Cemetery.

Andrew W. Landis, 80
Andrew Wellington Landis, 80, of Baltimore, MD, died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care, in Towson, MD.

Mr. Landis was born July 26, 1922, in Franklin and was the son of Lester and Grace Landis (Ogee).

He graduated from Circleville High School and joined the Navy in 1942. On September 29, 1946, he married Margaret I. Biby. They moved to Baltimore, MD, and he became an inspector at General Motors until he retired in 1982.

He was very active in his church, The Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD, where he was a deacon.

In addition to his surviving wife, are his son, Owen F. Landis, Sr., and his wife, Zonda Landis; Katy L. Stancliff and her husband, Dean Stancliff; and six grandchildren, Owen Landis, Jr., Melissa Landis, Shannon Stancliff, Joshua Stancliff, Jeremy Stancliff and Zachary Stancliff.

A funeral service was conducted by Rev. Tenny Parrish at the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial was at the Bel Air Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Bel Air, MD.

Mary Rose Worley
Mary Rose Worley, 62, of Alexandria, VA, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC.

Mrs. Worley was born Jan 24, 1941, in Sugar Grove and was a daughter of the late Charlie and Eliza Bennett Crummett.

Upon graduating from Franklin High School in 1959 she went to Alexandria, VA where she worked for C & P Telephone company until her first child was born in 1969 when she became a full time mother and housekeepr.

Mary Rose was first diagnosed with leukemia in 1991 and was successfully treated with chemotherapy. She was in remission until March, 1999 when the leukemia returned. She was treated again and in remission until April 2002. She was again treated with chemotherapy and had a bone marrow transplant. She was struggling complications from the transplant for several months.

She is survived by her husband Charlie Worley, whom she married on June 10, 1961, at the Grace Brethren Church in Alexandria, VA.

Also surviving are one daughter, Renee Dawn, a son, Kenneth of Alexandria, VA; one sister, Martha Hottle, Alexandria, VA; three brothers Ernest Crummett, Hooversville, PA, Charlie Crummett, Hilliard, OH and Galen Crummett , Sugar Grove; two grandsons, Joshua and Nathan Worley, Alexandria, VA; and five nephews and a niece.

Pastors Kenneth Worley, Mason Cooper and Robert Trefry conducted the funeral, Friday, June 20 at Grace Brethren Church, Alexandria, VA. Burail was in Arlington National Cemetery.

Roy Morral, 76 
Roy Morral, 76, of Hendricks, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Morral was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Onego and was a son of the late Winebert and Delphia Arbogast Morral.

He was a veteran of World War II and was retired from the B & O Railroad.

He was married twice, first wife, Lula Mae Ladd Morral, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his second wife, Doris White Morral; four sons, Ray Lee Morral, David Wayne Morral and Larry Eugene Morral, all of Baltimore, MD, and Paul Dean Morral; two daughters, Leslie Ann Smith, Baltimore, MD, and Teresa Parry of Westminster, MD; three sisters, Ocie Mallow of Dry Fork, Effie Pfitzenmaye and Ruby Harrison, both of Flintstone, MD; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers.

Services were conducted from the Hinkle Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Plaster officiating. Interment followed in the Kisamore Cemetery at Harman.

George Edwin McLain, Jr.
George Edwin McLain, JR., 70, of Brandywine, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at his home.

Mr. McLain was born May 26, 1933, in Mount Gilead, OH, and was the son of the late George Edwin McLain, Sr., and Fannie Chase McLain.

He was employed at Hartman’s Furniture Store, Brandywine Cablevision, Wampler Longacre, and was a television repairman.

He was a member of the Marengo, OH, American Legion Post, and was a veteran, having served in the Armed Reserves during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. McLain was Baptist by faith and attended the Brandywine Baptist Church.

On Aug. 23, 1968, he married Elva Jean Hoover, who preceded him in death Sept. 25, 1990.

He is survived by two daughters, Ann Weese and Pam Hoover, both of Brandywine; two sons, John McLain of Marion, OH, and Keith McLain of Nevada, OH; a sister, Jane Ayers of Mount Gilead, OH; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a fiancee, Delores Thompson of Brandywine.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one grandchild.

Pastor Tracy Fletcher conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Brandywine Baptist Church. Burial was at Pine Hill Cemetery at Brandywine with military graveside services conducted by members of the Marengo, Ohio American Legion Post.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Mary E. Borror, 77
Mary Ellen Whetzel Borror, 77, of Petersburg, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Borror was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Mozer and was the daughter of the late Edward Whetzel and Martha Lantz Whetzel.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Petersburg.

Her husband, Willie Brook Borror, preceded him in death in 1957.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph L. Borror of Petersburg and Joe Borror of Bunker Hill; three daughters, Brenda Borror and Mary Sue Judy, both of Petersburg, and Velma Ayers of Dorcas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Effie Dennison; and six brothers, an infant brother, Enoch Whetzel, Thomas Whetzel, Isaac Whetzel, Jacob Whetzel and Howard Whetzel. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A private memorial service and burial will be held at a later date.

Fred Carlos Dolly, 90
Fred Carlos Dolly, 90 of Cabins, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. He had lived at Grant County Nursing Home since January, 2002.

Mr. Dolly was born May 2, 1913, in Seneca Rocks and was the son of the late Friday Dolly and Clara Painter Dolly.

He was a farmer and a woodsmen. He was employed by the Department of Highways and retired form Germany Valley Limestone. Mr. Dolly attended Cabins Assembly of God Church.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Bertha E. Heavner Dolly, three daughters, Lucy Long of Cabins, Betty Miller of Newburg, MD, and Dottie Fidler of Arlington, VA, a half sister, Violet Vance of Hendricks; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two great-grandsons, Joshua Tekmen and Jesse Tekmen; two brothers, Roy Dolly and Guy Dolly.

The Rev. Joseph Eversole conducted the funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Harry Nelson Hill, 78 
Harry Nelson Hill, 78, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away June 20, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Hill was born July 9, 1924, in Harper, IA, and was the son of the late Wade E. and Violet Hulvey Hill. He was raised by the late Claude and Ruth Hawse of Linville, VA.

He graduated from Linville-Edom High School in 1942. At 18, he was drafted into the Army, where he served with the 78th Lightning Division-310 Infantry. He saw duty in the Adrennes Sector in Rhineland and Central Germany during World War II. Afterwards, he was awarded many medals, including the Bronze Star.

He is survived by special military service brothers and close family friends, Roger Swan and his wife, Jo, of Princeton, IL.  He was a member of the Carl D. Lee Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9872 at Mount Clinton, VA.  

He was a mechanic for Pierce Acker and Westside Garage and later was a heavy equipment operator for David A. Reed Construction.  He drove for Dayton Transport hauling many bridge beams used for the construction of Interstate 81.  He also drove for ShenMar.

On June 22, 1947, he married the former Helen Wagoner of Deer Run, who survives. 

Also surviving are four children, Lana Hartman and her husband, Jacob "Bill" of Penn Laird, VA; son roger Hill and wife, Pat , of Linville, VA; daughter, Mary Helen (Clooney) Rodeffer and husband, Kenny of Bridgewater, VA; son Harry "Chop" Nelson Hill, Jr., and wife, Kerry of Mount Crawford, VA;  10 grandchildren, Leanne and Henry Karnes, III, of Shenandoah, VA, Mark Hill of Linville VA, Nathan Rodeffer of Bridgewater, VA, Natalie and Chris Campbell of Staunton, VA, Adam Hill and Alex Hill of Mount Crawford, VA, and Mollie and Andrea Hess of Salem, VA; and two great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are a stepsister, Carlene Lohr of Tenth Legion and half sister, Gail Emswiler of New Market, VA.  

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Chandler and Doris Click; two brothers, Emmett and Oakley Hill; and half brother, Dewey Hill. 

The Revs. Elaine McGann and Roy Hedrick conducted a funeral service Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the McMullen  Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by Rion Bowman VFW Post 632.
