Lera Blanche Vance

Lera Blanche (Lambert) Vance, age 89, of Seneca Rocks, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2012 at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, with her husband she owned and operated Vance's Roller Rink in Seneca Rocks. She was employed by Celanese Manufacturing in Cumberland, MD, was an Avon Representative, and was a cook at Yokum's Restaurant and Valley View Grill. She retired from the Seneca Rocks Visitor Center where she worked for the United States Forest Service.

Surviving are one daughter, Laura Richmond and husband Michael of Summit Point; one son, Tim Vance and wife Angela of Seneca Rocks; three grandchildren, Brian Mowery, Laryssa Richmond and Lauren Cooney; five great-grandchildren, Elika, Caleb and Lyla Mowery and Aiden and Claire Cooney.

She was preceded in death by; four brothers, Varlie Lambert, Harold Lambert, Amis Lambert and an infant brother and five sisters, Rea Warner, Fannie Hinkle, Bessie Bennett Martha Hartman and an infant sister.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg with Pasto Barbara Rexroad and Pastor Robert Baer officiating. Interment followed at the North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.

Gordon A. Gaskill, 87, of Harrisonburg, VA, and formerly of Sugar Grove and Braintree and Freetown, NH died on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

He graduated from Braintree High School in 1942 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University and his Master’s degree from Brown University.

Mr. Gaskill was employed as the Head Librarian at the Waltham Public Library for 25 years prior to retiring and moving to West Virginia where he treasured the last 20 years farming and living the life of a farmer.

His favorite pastimes included the time spent with his treasured partner of 40 years, Douglas Stetson and with his family. Both Mr. Gaskill and Mr. Stetson enjoyed owning and operating a full running farm in both West Virginia and previously in Freetown, NH. The owners of numerous farm animals, they enjoyed horses and breeding miniature dashers.

In addition to his loving partner, he is survived by one sister-in-law: Dorothy M. (Grant) Gaskill of West Wareham, MA; a niece: Susan J. (Gaskill) Farquharson of Norton, MA; two nephews: Paul R. Gaskill of Bourne, MA and David P. Gaskill of Easton, MA and three great nieces: Lindsay N. Gaskill and Danielle L. Gaskill of Bourne, MA and Marissa L. McCabe of Norton, MA.

Graveside services were held Friday, June 1, 2012 at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree, MA with Rev. Carol L. Baker Officiating. Burial followed next to his beloved parents.

Friday, May 25, 2012. She died at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, surrounded by her loved ones, after a long illness with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, congestive heart failure and a cerebellar stroke.

Ms. Ownbey was born in Franklin, on October 28, 1928, and was a daughter of the late William Glenn Wimer and Eva Jane Warner Wimer.

She was a telephone repair technician having worked 21 years at Lucent Technology, eight years for the Defense Intelligence Agency and at various jobs after retiring at the age of 78. She left Franklin when she was 15, put herself through high school in Pennsylvania, married and remarried.

She was a loving mother to her children and a caring person to all. She always loved talking to her niece, Margaret Whetzel, about the Bible. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spotsylvania Ward. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are one daughter, Shelva Lee Lear of Spotsylvania, VA ; one son Glenn Wayne Lear of Amissville, VA; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Marvin Russell Simmons, 78, of Parsonsburg, MD passed away on Thursday, June 7, 2012, at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD.

Mr. Simmons served as an aircraft mechanic for the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired welder, having worked in maintenance for Labe Sheet Metal and BFI. He enjoyed hunting and gardening, and he loved being outdoors with his goats and cherry trees.

Also surviving are four daughters, Diane Lynn Baione and her husband, Thomas, of Pittsville, MD, Joy Lea Adkins and her husband, Carlton, of Willards, MD, Jennie Lou Baione of McAdoo, PA., and Marsha Lynn Morris and her husband, Matthew, of Delmar, MD; seven grandchildren, Kandy, Nina, Amanda, Cara, Linsey, Hunter and Kyle; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brittany, Kaleigh, Christian, Cadence, Trinity and Natalie; two brothers, O. Richard Simmons of Kansas City, MO., and A. Raymond Simmons of Quicksburg, VA.; sister-in-law, Helen Cook of Pittsville, MD; special nieces and nephews, including Bonnie Webster, Rita Dayton and Dallis Lambert; and valued friends, Carol Parsons and Tom Anderson.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, E. Guy Simmons; two sisters, Hazel Simmons and Mary Genevia Maupin; a grandson, Kevin Earl Austin; and a son-in-law, William Griffin.

A funeral service was held June 12 at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, MD, with Rev. Thomas C. Bunting officiating. Interment with military honors followed in Pittsville Cemetery.

Richard Dyke Mallow, age 90, of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2012, at his home with his family and his long faithful companion cat, Prissy, by his side.

Mr. Mallow retired in 1996 after more than 36 years as a Grade-A dairy farmer in Rockingham County. Mr. Mallow graduated from Franklin High School. He was a veteran, having served in the Army during World War II.

Surviving are two daughters, Ruda Kay Smith and Sue M. Parker and her husband, Samuel T. Parker, Jr., and four grandchildren, Heather Smith, Joshua, Jason and Jonathan Parker all of Manassas, VA; a sister-in-law and close friend, Clara Mallow, of Upper Tract; a first cousin, Ann Harman Ferrucci of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, William M. Smith; two brothers, Gerald R. and Ralph H. Mallow; and two sisters, Helen Sherwood and Ella Kathryn Mallow.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with the Minister Bob Horn officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 until 2:00 Sunday prior to the funeral services with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #27, Dayton, VA.

Ellen “Sue” White Morrison, 75, of Frank passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Born July 4, 1936 at Bartow, she was a daughter of the late Lester A. And Mervin Arbogast Bennett, formerly of Elk Mountain.

Surviving are a daughter, Ruth E. Ferrell and husband, Bill of Roanoke, VA; two sons, David A. White and Mike C. White, both of Frank; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter Treasa Diana White in 1975; three sisters, Hazel Wincek, Virginia Gragg and Carolina Davis; and four brothers, Leo Bennett, Kenny Evert Bennett, Allen Bennett and Carl Bennett.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale with David Rittenhouse officiating. Burial was in Arbovale Cemetery.
