Charles “Fats” Landis

Charles Harman “Fats” Landis, 77, passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2010, his residence in Valley Bend.

Mr. Landis was born in Riverton on May 4, 1933, the son of the late Ralph Maurice (12-28-1975) and Mary Kerlin Sponaugle Landis (7-27-1971).

He attended Pendleton County Schools, and was a Methodist and a salesperson.

On March 27, 1953, he married Elsia Evans, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Charel D. Elyard and husband, Charles of Franklin, and Mary Lou Nelson and husband, Anthony of Harrisonburg, VA; two sons, Charles B. Landis and wife, Shonnette of Valley Bend, and Robert B. Landis and wife, Charlene of Beverly; two sisters, Kitty Simmons and husband, Blaine of Staunton, VA, and Dolly Nilsen of Franklin; five brothers, Ralph Landis, Jr. and wife, Jane of Petersburg, Robert J. Landis and wife, Wanda,  and Olin R. and wife, Elaine, all of Franklin, Jimmy J. Landis of Flint, MI, and Larry Landis and wife, Lynn of Madison, MS; 11 grandchildren, Wesley Elyard, Jenny Elyard, Brent Elyard, Jamie Bostic, Misty Nelson, Sherlon Nelson, Shane Nelson, Michelle Hammonds, Melissa Smith, Ashleigh Landis and Jordan Landis; and eight great-grandchildren, Connor Glover, Nikolas Glover, Trevor Hammonds, Devon Hammonds, Kaila Channel, Kyleigh Smith, Kortney Bostic and Aiden Bostic.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Jerry Paul Landis, John W. Landis and Buster Landis; and one sister, Mary Ann.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Pastor Wendy Richter officiating.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

The family received friends Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Homer Perry Ratliff

Homer Perry Ratliff, 78, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010.

He was born Dec. 21, 1931, in Mozer and was the son of the late Perry Ratliff and Lena Kesner Ratliff.

Mr. Ratliff retired from Westinghouse electric in 1994 after 32 years of service.

His wife of 46 years, Frances Maxine Bolen Ratliff, survives.

Also surviving are four boys, Dale W. Sizemore, Terry S. Ratliff and wife, Anne, Davis W. Sizemore and wife, Bonnie, and Rick D. Ratliff and wife, Vicki; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hazel Simmons, Genevieve May and Vada Mallow, a sister-in-law, Elva Ratliff; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Darlene Ratliff Elsberry; four brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral services were held at the Connelly Funeral Home in Essex, MD, with a military burial at Middle River Cemetery in Baltimore, MD.

Burrel Vance

Burrel Vance, 96, of Seneca Rocks passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

Mr. Vance was born March 26, 1914, at the Mouth of Seneca on Spruce Mountain, the son of the late Hoy and Delphia Sites Vance.

He was a member of “Silent Wings”, VFW (a lifetime member since 1945) and Pleasant View United Methodist Church.  He attended Smith Mountain School.  He was the owner/operator of Vance's Garage, worked as a school bus driver for Pendleton County School for 19 years and was a WWII Veteran of the United States Air Force as a glider mechanic.

On April 8, 1950, Burrel married Lera Blanche Lambert, who survives in Seneca Rocks.

Also surviving are a daughter, Laura Richmond and husband, Michael of Summit Point; a son, Tim Vance and wife, Angela of Seneca Rocks; three grandchildren, Brian Mowery and wife, Sharon, Laryssa Richmond and Lauren Cooney; five great-grandchildren, Elika Mowery, Caleb Mowery, Lila Mowery, Aiden Cooney and Claire Cooney.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Burt and French; and two sisters, Mae Shirk and Etta Weese.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg with Rev. Barbara Rexroad officiating.  Interment was in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.  Military graveside services were provided by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Safe Harbor at Grant County Nursing Home or National Kidney Foundation.

Bessie V. Kimble, 92

Bessie V. Alt Kimble, 92, of Buckhannon died Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Serenity Care in Buckhannon.

Her husband, Herman L. Kimble, preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons, Jerry L. Kimble, William M. Kimble and Wayne L. Kimble, all of Buckhannon.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time.
