Virginia P. Kline, 79

Loving mother, Virginia Pearl Miller Kline, 79, of Chester and formerly of Brandywine, went to be with the Lord on May 24, 2006.  

Mrs. Kline was born Aug. 10, 1927, in Sutton and was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Lewis Cutlip. 

She was a caregiver for various family members and others.  She spent her time helping other people who got burned out or needed to go to the doctor and helping her late brother, Carl Cutlip, who lived with her for over a year.

Her first husband, John W. Miller, preceded her in death in 1976.  Her second husband, John Kline, preceded her in death in 1987.

Surviving are her companion of 16 years, Sonny Morrison; five daughters, Shirley Miller Snyder of Fairmont, Freda Miller McCullough and husband, Al of Chester, Kay Miller Moore of Weirton, Sue Miller Janes of North Carolina and Sharon Miller Burkett and husband, Mike of Parkersburg; four sons, Charles G. Miller and wife, Rettha of Exchange, George Miller and Cecil Miller, both of Charleston, and Randy Miller of Martins Ferry, OH; and four brothers Bruce Cutlip and Jack Cutlip, both of Franklin, Ralph Cutlip of Virginia and Ira Cutlip of Ohio.  

She also was preceded in death by two daughters Donna and Thelma Miller; two brothers, Paul Cutlip, her twin brother who died at birth, and Carl Cutlip; nine step-children, Earl , Vernon, Clarence, Tom, Pauline, Madline and Herbert Miller, Juanita Foster and Mrs. Alma Moats; three grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. 

The funeral was conducted Saturday at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home in Flatwoods.  Burial was in Westfall Cemetery in Exchange.  

Memorial contributions may be made in care of her daughter, Freda Miller McCollough, to purchase computers for the Hancock County Opportunity Center.  

Lola M. Harper, 94

Lola Mae Vandevender Harper, 94, of Monterey, VA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 28, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Brenda Pullin. 

Mrs. Harper was born Aug. 19, 1911, at Forks of the Water, VA, and was the daughter of the late Jerry Solomon and Lizzie Lou Wagner Vandevender. 

She was a lifelong member of Forks of the Water United Brethren Church.  

Her husband, Roy Kenton Harper, preceded her in death June 23, 1967. 

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine and Albert Shultz of Monterey, VA, Ruby Gail and Gaylon Sponaugle and Elaine and Arnold Lambert , all of Franklin, and Brenda and R.C. Pullin of Monterey; a son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Sharon Harper of Monterey; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was the last survivor of her immediate family.  

She also was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Kenton Harper, on March 4, 1990. 

Pastors Chip Hill, Levin Coulbourn and Darren Massey conducted the funeral Wednesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA.  Vocals at the service were performed by Darren and Sandy Massey.  Burial followed at the Blue Grass Cemetery, Blue Grass, VA.

Kenneth B. Propst

Kenneth B. Propst, 81, of Franklin, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 23, 1924, at Moyers and was the son of the late Pinkney Lawrence Propst and Sarah Margaret "Sally" Harper Propst. 

Mr. Propst was a 1943 graduate of Franklin High School and a WWII Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.  He served in the Luzan Campaign with the 126th Field Batallion as a radio operator.  He attained the rank of Sergeant, and received the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Bronze Star and Victory Medal.  He was a lifetime member of Sugar Grove V.F.W. Post 9666, where he had served as post commander.  He was a longstanding member of the AFL-CIO and a member of the Louisa county Virginia AARP Chapter.  He was a Lutheran all his life and a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he loved serving his church as council man and giving of his time and support.  He was an active member of the Franklin Ruritan Club.

Employed by Stone & Webster Engineering Corp., he worked out of the Clarksburg local for several years.  He was given the opportunity to further his education and as rewarded by the company with a promotion of supervisor.  

After the promotion, he and his wife resided in Louisa County, VA, for 28 yeas, where he ws employed by Stone and Webster during the construction of the Atomic plant on the North Anna river until its completion.  He was later employed in northern Virginia by Ashland Oil Company, Inc., where he supervised subway and overpass work and the completion of the I-95 fort McHenry Tunnel, Baltimore, MD.  He then worked as a supervisor for Driggs Corportaion in the Alexandria area for ten years.  Retiring Jan. 1, 1993, he returned to a home in Anderson Hill in Franklin and was happy raising cattle and farming the homeplace with his brother, Leland.  

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Frieda R. Propst; her daughter, Judy M. (Ralph Steven) Moreland of Middleburg, N.Y.; his sons, Nathan R. (Linda) Propst of Brandywine, Burton B. (Linda) Propst Jr., of Harrisonburg, VA, and Gary (Janet) Propst of Harrisonburg, VA, and Bruce Propst of Frederick, MD and Ricky Propst of Richmond, VA; two brothers, Vernon R. Propst and Leland E. Propst, both of Franklin; one stepsister, Mary Alice Evick of Franklin; 11 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and many friends.

He was also preceded in death by one stepsister, Arvella Skelton of Churchville, VA..

Funeral services were held Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Franklin with the Revs. Craig and Wendy Richter officiating.  Interment was at Cedar Hill Cemetery with military graveside services conducted  by members of the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Julia M. Vance, 97

Julia Mae Vance, 97, of Cabins, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg.

Mrs. Vance was born Sept. 4, 1908, in Onego and  was the daughter of the late Kenny Mallow and Zernie Phares Mallow. 

She was preceded in death by three husbands, Henry McAvoy, Frank Hedrick and Adam Vance.

Surviving are a son, Jurl D. McAvoy of Purgitsville; two sisters, Margie Long a resident of the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg, and Grace Anderson of Seneca Rocks; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Betty McAvoy; four grandchildren; three brothers, Dayton Mallow and Omar Mallow and an infant Ace Mallow; and three sisters, Mary Vance, Kate Mallow and Zula Long.

The Rev. Joseph  Eversole conducted the funeralSaturday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home Chapel in  Petersburg. Burial was in the Mallow Cemetery in Riverton.

Nina V. Helmick, 94

Nina Violet Alt Helmick, 94, of Petersburg, died Saturday, May 27, 2006, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. Helmick was born Feb. 19, 1912, in Smoke Hole and was the daughter of the late Henry H. Alt and Levina Bell Kimble Alt. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hughie A. Helmick on Sept. 7, 1996. 

Survivors include a son, Jim Helmick of Petersburg; four daughters, Dorothy VanMeter, a resident of Grant county Nursing Home in Petersburg, Kathleen VanMeter of Burlington and Wanda Brill and Rose Hines, both of Petersburg; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. 

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Ellen Moyers; three sons, Berkley "Buck" Helmick and infants Stanley and Lloyd Helmick; three grandchildren, Denny Moyers, Otho "Scoop" Moyers and Trent Helmick; and three great-grandchildren, Michael VanMeter, Stephanie Moyers and infant great-grandson Dolly; six sisters, Texie Alt and Lilly Kimble, Janie Whetzel, Lottie Reel, Rhoda VanMeter and Margie Davis and two brothers, Frank Alt and Curtis Alt.

The Rev. Joseph Eversole condcuted the funeral Tuesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in petersburg.  Burial was at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Darwin Michael, 77

Merl Darwin Michael, 77, of Petersburg, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Michael was born March 26, 1929, in Petersburg and was the son of the late Merl Henry Michael and Flossie Virginia Wolfe Michael. 

He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1948.  He was an auto mechanic instructor for south Branch Vocational School and was an assistant manager for Greer Limestone in Riverton for 19 years.  he was a member of Main Street United Methodist church and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. 

On May 31, 1951, he married Phyllis V. Keller Michael, who survives.  

He is also survived by a son, Michael D. Michael and wife, Theresa of Gambrills, MD; three daughters, Lisa Pratt and husband, Frank of Moorefield, Lori Helmick and husband, Timothy and Laura Roth and husband, Mark, all of Morgantown; a sister, Gail Rohrbaugh of Moorefield; three brothers, Carroll N. Michael and Gene G. Michael, both of Petersburg, and Harold K. Michael of Moorefield; eight grandchildren, Brenda Michael, William, Ashton and Briana Pratt, Erika and Allison Helmick and Shannon and Skyler Roth; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Neil Michael, Ray Michael and Tracy Michael.

The Revs. William Haynes, Jr., and Catherine Jackson conducted the funeral Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at the Shobe Family Cemetery in Petersburg with military graveside honors by the combined veteran organizations of Grant County and the JROTC.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or charity of choice. 

Gladys Lambert, 87

Gladys Waggy Lambert, 87, of Bridgewater, VA, died Saturday, May 27, 2006, at Oak Lea Nursing Home in Harrisonburg, VA. 

Mrs. Lambert was born Oct. 14, 1918 in Sugar Grove and was a daughter of the late Perry and Carrie Louella "Lula" Pitsenbarger Waggy.

She was employed at WLR Foods in Hinton and Marvel Poultry in Dayton, VA. 

In 1936, she married Kermit Jesse Lambert, who preceded her in death May 22, 1986.  

she is survived by three daughters, Orva L. Showalter of Bridgewater, VA, and Carolyn Wenger and Zandra Miller, both of Dayton, VA; a son , Adrian Lambert of Dayton, VA; a son, Adrian Lambert of Dayton, VA; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  

Buddy Showalter and David Showalter conducted a private entombment service Wednesday at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens and mausoleum in Harrisonburg, VA.

Andrew H. Champ, 75

Andrew Harlan Champ, 75, of Baltimore, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, in Baltimore, after an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 22, 1930, in Seneca Rocks, he was the son of the late Andrew J. and Ethel (Alt) Champ.

He retired from General Motors Corporation, Baltimore, MD. 

Surviving are his wife, Geneva (Cooper) Champ; two sons, Douglas Champ and Stephen Champ, both of Baltimore, MD; one daughter, Sandy Brisson of Baltimore, MD; three sisters: Thelma Rohrbaugh of Petersburg and Virginia Vance a resident of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, and Ruby Dolly of Medley; two brothers, Darrell Champ of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg and Dayton Champ of Lahmansville.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at New Life Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Bruzdzinski Funeral Home in Baltimore, MD.
