Evelyn Painter, 85

Evelyn M. Painter, 85, of Grafton passed away May 20, 2008, at the residence of her daughter, Penny, in Clarksburg. 

Born Jan. 11, 1923, in Upper Tract, she was a daughter of the late Isaiah and Kate Simmons Murphy.

After graduating from Martinsburg Beauty Academy, she opened her first beauty salon on Franklin.  She was a member of the First Christian Church in Grafton.

Her husband, Ralph V. Painter, formerly of Franklin, preceded her in death on July 9, 2001.

Surviving are one daughter, Penny S. Hickman of Clarksburg, with whom she resided; three grandchildren, Jason E. Hickman, Joshua C. Hickman and wife, Jennifer Hickman of Flemington, and misty Lea Satterfield and husband, Brian of Waynesboro, PA; and seven great-grandchildren, Holly and Mariah Hickman, Autumn and Breyden Satterfield, Curtis Hickman and Sam and Garrett Mazzie. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by one daughter, Holly Mae Painter, who died in infancy two brothers, Dick Murphy and Richard Murphy; one sister, Radie Smith; and one son-in-law, Curtis B. Hickman. 

Funeral services were held on Saturday at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton with Pastor Billy D. Crane officiating.  Interment was at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin. 

Paul D. Wills, Jr., 31

Paul David Wills, Jr., 31, of Longs, SC, passed away suddenly on May 17, 2008.

Born Feb. 6, 1977, in Silver Spring, MD, he was the son of the Paul D. Willis, Sr., and Judy Ann Wimer Wills

He was a sports enthusiast and loved golf and the Red Skins.

Surviving, besides his parents are a sister, Crystal Dorr and husband, David of Grapevine, TX; and two nieces, Catherine and Sarah Dorr.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Omer and Viva Wimer of Forestville, MD, and his great-grandparents, Cam and Tressie Lambert of Riverton.

A memorial service was held May 21 at the Lee Funeral Home Chapel, North Myrtle Beach, SC.

K. Max Hartman

K. Max Hartman, 86, of Franklin died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Hartman was born March 22, 1922, in Circleville and was the son of the late Zell and Martha Lambert Hartman.

He grew up in the Dry Run area.  He moved to the Baltimore / Washington area as a young man and worked for a chemical company and the railroad.  After marrying, he and his wife lived in Baltimore, MD, where he worked for Bethlehem Steel until they returned to Pendleton County. 

Mr. Hartman worked for Kline Motor Sales and Pendleton Motor Sales until he opened his own business, Hartman's Service Station, on March 17, 1960.  He enjoyed his life's work as a mechanic, auto salesperson, businessman and farmer.

He was a member of Smith Creek Church of the Brethren, where he was active in the Men's fellowship and enjoyed traveling to several of the church's annual conferences.  He and his wife were the sponsors of the Smith Creek 4-H Club.  He also was a member of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1940s / early 1950s.  He was a member of the Pendleton County Farm Bureau and the Harrisonburg, VA, Auto Auction.

He enjoyed talking with people, growing large vegetable gardens.  He was generous and will be remembered for his perseverance, lovely smile, work ethic, playfulness and friendliness. 

On July 1, 1943, he married Mabel Elizabeth Moyers, who preceded him in death on Aug. 14, 1999. 

Surviving are a daughter, Myra Sue Hartman of Martinsburg; three sons, Sammy Max Hartman and Gailand Lee Hartman, both of Franklin, and Kenneth Mark Hartman and wife, Vickie of Upper Tract; two beloved granddaughters, Holly Judy Hartman and Katie Elizabeth-Gail Hartman; three sisters, Eva Propst and Avis Thompson, both of Baltimore, MD, and Doris Colaw and husband, Layman of Hinton, VA; an aunt, Lera Vance of Seneca Rocks; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Bennett; and two brothers, Gaylon and Wayland Hartman.

Pastor Daryl Ritchie conducted the funeral Wednesday at Smith Creek Church of the Brethren.  Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Franklin Rescue Squad, c/o Paul G. Mallow.

Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Hansel Hedrick

Hansel Hedrick of Riverton died Tuesday at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.

Funeral arrangements, under the directon of Basagic Funeral Home, were incomplete at press time.
