George A. Mitchell, Jr. 

Twenty-one shots echoed through the Allegheny Mountains in a military salute when Army Spc. Geroge A. Mitchell, jr., age 35, of Antioch was buried apirl 28, 2003, at the Potomac Memorial Gardens in Keyser, three weeks after being killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He died in a field hospital on April 7, the day he was hit by an enemy rocket near Baghdad. 

Born May 28, 1967, in Lebanon, PA, he is survived by his wife Brenda Sue, niece of Jenny Pitsenbarger of Fort Seybert; his children, Bailee, three, and Joshua, two of Antioch, and 10 year old Christopher of Lebanon, PA; a step-son, Jeff Greco of Cumberland, MD; his parents, George A. Mitchell, Sr. of Enola PA, and Cynthia F. Kriser Mitchell of Lebanon, PA; a brother, David of Lebanon; a half-brother, Gabriel, and step-brother Joe Mitchell of Enola; a step-grandson, Cody Greco and in laws, Edward and Levonna Purinton of Danville, MD. 

He descended from the Pendleton County Mitchells through Abiathar, a brother of Andrew Jackson Mitchell, and first cousin of Charles and Santa Mitchell.  Over the past six years, his family had spent several nights in the home of Donald and Lorella Lee Mitchell.

After ten years of life as a civilian in the Army Reserves, Mitchell re-enlisted in May, 2002, as part of the 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Stewart, GA.  On September 20, 2002, he was sent to Kuwait, where he had fought in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.  He was a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

His funeral was held at the Danville Community church, Rawlings, MD, where he was a member.  "He died doing what he did best.' his father said.  He wrote to his stating: "If this does not transpire into what is a dream for me, I will defend all in body and spirit."  

Oscar L. Dame, 97

Oscar L. Dame, 97, of Eagle Pointe, Parkersburg, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Eagle Pointe. 

Mr. Dame was born Sept. 13, 1905, in Livingston and was a son of the late Robert and Sarah Ann Bennett Dame.

 He was a 1928 graduate of Virginia Tech, and was in the National Guard.  He wasw a member of the Henrietta I.O.O.F. Lodge in Montgomery and was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Brandywine.  H owned and operated Dames Grocery Store in Hansford, where he retired in 1979.  Following retirement, he moved to Pendleton County.  In 1999, he moved to Vienna, VA, to live with his daughter. 

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores (Sandy) Coleman, and her husband, James, of Vienna, VA, and Linda Williamson, and her husband, Bert of  Savannah, GA; four grandchildren, David Coleman of Parma Heights, OH.  Carroll Caldwell of St. Francisville, LA, Michael Farley of Alexandria, VA, and Kristen Williamson of Savannah, GA; seven great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Bobby Dame of Low Moor, VA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Louise Kauff Dame; and several brothers and sisters. 

Graveside services were held May 22 at Montgomery Memorial Gardens in London with Rev. Dana Holter officiating. 

Arrangements were under the direction of the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Vienna, VA. 

Russell M. Warner

Russell McKendria Warner, 85, of Cherry Grove, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. 

Mr. Warner was born Dec. 2, 1917, in North Fork Dry Run near Cherry Grove and was a son of the late  Wilbur Flick Warner and Mary Kate Nelson Warner.  

He retired Feb. 18, 1983, from the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources after 27 years of service.  He was a farmer and outdoorsman.  He was a member of North Dry Run United Methodist church, the Pendleton county Farm Bureau, the Franklin Moose Lodge NO. 769, Pendleton Lodge No. 144 and a 50-year member of A.F.& A.M.

Surviving are his wife, Gretta Mae Waybright Warner; two daughters, Frances Ellen Von-Schilling of Cherry Grove and Sherry Lee Pillow of Warrenton, VA; three sisters, Lucille Warner and Myrtle Ruth Thompson, both of Franklin, and Thelma Lambert of Cherry Grove; one grandson, Adrian Sean Pillow; and one great-granddaughter, Susan Lily Pillow. 

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Julian and Nelson; and two sisters, Leslie Warner and Mildred Colaw.  

The Rev. Stanley Kile conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton with Masonic rites by the Pendleton Lodge No. 144.  

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton County rescue squads.
