Reed O. Hammer

Reed O. Hammer, 71, of Franklin, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at his home. 

Mr. Hammer was born May 15, 1933, at Franklin and was the son of the late Olin R. Hammer and Myrtle Lynn Dickenson Hammer.

He was a graduate of the Franklin High School Class of 1951.  He was a wildlife manager for the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources for 36 years, and had also worked for Hartman Cable.  He was a veteran, having served in the US Army for two years during the Korean Conflict.  He was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an elder and Sunday school superintendent.  He was a charter member of and held all offices in the Franklin Ruritan Club, and served as governor for Upper Tract WV Ruritan District #19.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 30 for 27 years and a member of Franklin Moose Lodge 769 for 28 years. 

On December 19, 1976, he married Carolyn M. Calhoun Hammer, who survives. 

Also surviving are two daughters, Connie Delamater of Valrico, FL, and Karen Altizer of Weyers Cave, VA; two sons, Mike Hammer and Dewayne Borror, both of Franklin; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one step-great-granddaughter. 

He was preceded in death by two daughters and one sister. 

Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Franklin Presbyterian Church with Dr. Richard Young officiating. 

Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin with military graveside services accorded by members of the Pendleton County Honor Guard. 

Memorials may be made to the Franklin Presbyterian Church or the Franklin Rescue Squad.  

The Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin was in charge of the arrangements. 

Joyce A. Wimer Selmon

Joyce A. Wimer Selmon, 61, of Staunton, VA, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA. 

Mrs. Selmon was born Feb. 14, 1953, at Moyers.  She was the daughter of Charles A. Burns of Riverton and Ella Mae Wimer Rexrode of Moyers. 

Also surviving are her husband, Charles Al. Selmon; son, Nathaniel Selmon of Staunton, VA; a half sister and fiancee' Nancy L. Rexrode and David L. Pultz of Moyers; three half brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Donna Burns of McDowell, VA, Charles E. and Debbie Burns and Steven and Donna Burns all of Riverton; and two nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan Selmon; and step-father, Berlie Rexrode. 

Reverend Calvin Bailey performed a beautiful memorial service Saturday, in the Wimer cemetery in Moyers, which was held and attended by her loving and caring family and friends.  

The body was cremated and arrangements were handled by Reynolds Funeral Home in Waynesboro, VA. 

Kenneth Jordan, 79

Kenneth Lee Jordan, 79, of Petersburg died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. 

Mr. Jordan was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Lawrence county, KY, and was the son of the late Hiram A. Jordan and Dolly Atkins Jordan Shortridge.  

He was a contracts administrator for Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, Hercules inc., and retired in 1978.  He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.  He was a member of the Potomac Highlands VFW Post No. 6454, a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, a member of the Independent Odd Fellows Petersburg Lodge No. 408 and a member of the Lndes Ruritan Club. 

His wife of 51 years, Lois Jean Bowers Jordan, survives. 

Also surviving are two sons, Dr. David Jordan of McLean, VA, and Kenneth Jordan of Oakland, MD; three daughters, Marsha Jordan Hribar of Morgantown, Kim Jordan deAndrade of Columbus, OH, and Sheree Jordan Smith of Richmond, VA; a sister, Mildred Carey of Hilliard, OH; and eight grandchildren.  

The Rev. William M. Haynes Jr. conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial with a military graveside service by the combined Veteran Organizations of Grant County and the JROTC was in the Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.

John H. Kipp, Sr., 64

John Herbert Kipp Sr., 64, of Broadway, VA, passed away at his residence May 23, 2004. 

He was born Oct. 10, 1939, inWilmington, DE, and was a son of the late Hugh and Gladys Rose Goodey Kipp. 

He was a farmer, and a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran.  He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the VFW. 

His wife, Nancy Hartman Kipp, survives him.  

Also surviving are two sons, John Kipp Jr. of Broadway, VA, Kelly Kipp and wife, Leslie of Lost city; three step-sons, Michael Barnett and wife, Lisa of Wasilla, AK. Bruce Barnett and wife, Carol of Fairbanks, AK, Garry Barnett of Brooklyn Park, MN; one step-daughter, Janice Tendler and husband, David of Vancouver, WA; one brother, William A. Kipp and wife, Jean of Quarryville, PA; one sister, Regina Druck and husband, Gordon of Kirkwood, PA; a loving daughter-in-law, Jana; seven grandchildren; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Rev. Dr. Patricia M. Meadows conducted a private graveside service with military rites Wednesday at Culpeper National Cemetery.

Michael Simmons, 34

Michael Wayne Simmons, 35, of McGaheysville, VA, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at his home as a result of a house fire. 

Mr. Simmons was born May 24, 1969, at Harrisonburg, VA, a son of Harold D. Simmons, Sr., and the late Othelia Odell (Hamrick) Simmons. 

He attended the former Harper Chapel United Methodist Church.  He had worked on a poultry farm.  

He was preceded in death by his mother, Odell Simmons, on June 30, 1990; and an infant son, Skyler Michael Reedy, on May 21, 2004. 

In addition to his father, Harold Simmons, Sr., of Dayton, VA, he is survived by a daughter, Brittany Simmons of Franklin; a son, Wesley M. Simmons, of Franklin; six sisters, Wanda Warner and husband, Steve, Debra Nelson and Patty Tidd Seabolt and husband, John, all of Franklin, Sharon Mullenax and husband, Richard of Blue Grass, VA, Betty Simmons of Petersburg and Kimberly Smith of Harrisonburg, VA; a brother Harold "Lucky" Simmons, Jr., and his wife Brenda L. of Dayton, VA; a former wife , Patricia A. Simmons of Franklin; a former father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Susie White of Sugar Grove; and a former brother-in-law and his wife, Patrick and Connie White of Franklin.

A memorial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, with the Rev. Dan Ludwig officiating. 

Burial will be private. 

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
