Melvin John Hartman

Melvin John Hartman, 86, passed away at his home in Springville, UT on Saturday, May 12, 2012, of natural causes. His devoted and beloved wife of 65 years was with him.

Mr. Hartman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and survived the sinking of his ship, the Colin. Lured by the purple sunsets of the west that he'd read about, he took his young family across the country to Arizona, where he earned a master's degree in education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. After graduating, he took a teaching job in Lincoln, California, where he and Charlotte lived for 27 years and raised their four daughters. He also worked 33 seasons for the National Park Service, serving in the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Zion. John enjoyed chopping wood, grafting apple trees, making apple juice, Scrabble, hiking, bike riding, hunting, fishing, and simply enjoying the outdoors. He had a special gift with animals.

Mr. Hartman was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a faithful home teacher, counselor in the bishopric, and bishop.

He married his sweetheart, Charlotte Louise Eye, on May 10, 1947. Their marriage was sealed in the Oakland LDS Temple on March 16, 1974.

Also surviving are four daughters, Gloria (Roy) Smilanick of Fresno, California; Vicky Hartman of Springville, Utah; Cindy (Howard) Bodily of Tempe, Arizona, and Karri Hartman of Springville, Utah; one brother, Loy (Bobby) Hartman, Harrisonburg, VA; and four sisters, Lucy (Sam) Propst, Mary Kathleen (Roy) Mitchell and Cornelia (Jake) Teter, all of Franklin, and Nancy (John) Kipp, Broadway, VA; 16 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild. 

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Weldon (Marthenna) Hartman of Franklin and Otis (Shirley)Hartman of Hightown, VA.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Springville 18th Ward Chapel, Springville, UT. Friends and family may call at the church one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Historic Springville City Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion.

Shirley Arleen (Wable) Vance, age 75, of Seneca Rocks, went home with her Lord on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 with her loving family by her side at Hospice Care in Elkins.

Born Sunday, February 14, 1937 in Fort Hill, PA, she was the daughter of the late Analda (Jack) Wable of Markleysburg, PA and the late Ethel (Firestone) Wable of Meyersdale, PA.

Mrs. Vance was retired after 26 years of service at Deer Creek Clinic, Green Bank, as a receptionist/medical coder.

Her love for flowers has always been known by the gardens around her home(s) where neighbors knew her passion for plum colored impatiens. Many hours were spent poring over flower and bulb catalogs to see what "new" plants were available. Her love for reading was also known, sharing/swapping books with her close friends. She loved crocheting and had welcomed many new babies into the world with their very own afghan. She loved canning and "putting up peaches" for the freezer every winter. She kept in touch with family via computer e-mails and facebook activity. Memories re-visited were Caribbean cruises, trips to Branson, MO and those special vacations to Florida. Many reunions with loving family members were at the top of her fond memories where she will be remembered for her wonderful macaroni salad, homemade bread and golden pound cake.

She was blessed with 41 years of dedicated marriage to her loving husband, Richard (Dick) H. Vance of Seneca Rocks, survives.

Mrs. Vance is also survived by two sisters, Margaret M. (Wable) Crawford-Carr of Dunbar, PA and Sarah J. (Wable) Artice of Meyersdale, PA.

She always had such a tender heart for children. While having no children of her own, she helped raise and care for her niece/daughter, Robin (Crawford) Hair of Dunbar, PA. Robin was at her side throughout her lifetime, gladly sharing her family with her "Aunt Shirl". Aunt Shirl was considered "Grandma" to Robin and her husband, Daniel's three children, Dale and wife, Janice Hair of Fort Hill, PA, Brian and wife, Monica Hair of Clarksburg, TN and Dayna and husband, Jack Maloy of Dunbar, PA; and "great-grandma" to eight great-grandchildren, David Allen, Jacob, Abbigail, Evan, Ava and Aiden Hair, Riley and Jack Maloy.

"Aunt Shirl" had many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Close nieces were Carol (Fike) Umbel of Friendsville, MD and Shirley (Durst) Brinson of Havelock, NC. Very close family were Nancy and Merle Webley of Seneca Rocks; Karen and Nathan Cooper of Kingwood; Bryan and Deborah Webley and children, Spencer and Colleen; Brennon and Crissy Webley and children, Scotty and Morgan; Shawn and Maggie Cooper and children, Malia and Sydney of Elkins, and Melissa Cooper of Morgantown.

Mrs. Vance leaves behind many, many dear loving friends. Special lifetime friends are Rosie and Thurman Gerber of Coshocton, Ohio; Angel and Kevin Roy of Seneca Rocks; Michele and Travis Eye and children, Donna and Frank Eye of Harman; Joyce Williams of Orrville, OH and close friend, Patsy Hedrick of Seneca Rocks.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice (Wable) Durst, Berdella (Wable) Fike and Virginia Wable; a close nephew, Michael Durst and a dear friend, Becky Buzzerd.

Hubert Dwight Raines, 89, of Moran Manor Health Care Center in Westernport, MD and formerly of Riverton, passed away May 18, 2012 at the Moran Manor.

Born and raised in Riverton, Hubert graduated from Circleville High School, Circlevillle, in 1942. He then went on to West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State College where he received a Masters Degree in Music Education. Using his degree, he taught music and band at schools in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He served as the band director at Petersburg High School for many years. He returned to school at West Virginia University where he received another masters degree in reading education. He taught and retired from Pendleton County Schools as a reading teacher after a 40 year career in education.

Mr. Raines was a lover of music and an accomplished pianist. He was a member of the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church in Riverton, as well as a member of the West Virginia and Pendleton County Association of Retired School Employees.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Pastor Barbara Rexroad officiating. Internment followed at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.
