Kenneth R. Lough, 75

Kenneth R. Lough, 75, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Monday, may 12, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA. 

Mr. Lough was born Feb. 19, 1928 in Grant County and was the son of the late Luther J. and Oliff Dean Lough. 

He moved to Dayton, VA, early in his life, and was a graduate of Dayton High School.  Mr. Lough went into business with his father and brother at Lough Building contractors, which later became Lough Brothers. 

He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church.  He was a 49-year member of the Dayton American Legion Post 277-27, where he served as finance officer.  He was a Mason and member of the Eureka Lodge 195 AF&AM in Bridgewater, VA, and a past member of the Elks Club.  He was a member of the ACCA Temple in Richmond, VA, and a member of the Valley Shrine Club in Harrisonburg, VA. 

On April 9, 1949, he married Gloria Jean Lough, who preceded him in death.  On June 24, 1988, he married Jane Hosaflook Cline who survives. 

Also surviving are four children, K. Wade Lough and wife Patricia, Knoxville, TN, Lisa Lough Calhoun and husband, Lindy, Madison, MS, Lynn Lough Fellowes and husband, David, Richmond, VA, and Watt Lough, Northern Virginia; three step-children, J. Daryl Cline and wife, Karen, Terri Cline Manor and husband, William, all of Harrisonburg, VA, and Debra Cline Deavers and husband, Delany, Chesterfield, VA; five grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one brother, Carroll Dean Lough and wife, Helen R., Dayton, VA; one sister, Bonnie A. Lough, Harrisonburg, VA; several nieces and nephews; and great nieces and cousins. 

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Denver Curtis Lough. 

A memorial service was held Thursday evening at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg, VA, with the Rev. Glen Langston conducting the service.  Mr. Lough was to be cremated at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA.  Honorary Attendants were the members of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, the American Legion Post 277-27 and the Valley Shrine Club.

Varley G. "Pap" Lambert, Sr.

Varley Guss "Pap" Lambert, Sr., 75, of Riverton, died Monday, may 19, 2003, at his residence. 

Mr. Lambert was born June 20, 1927, in Cherry Grove and was the son of the late Ira Lambert and Sudie Arbogast Lambert.  

He was a sawyer on a sawmill.  He worked with Habitat for Humanity and was president of Lambert Hill Top Park.  He attended the Circleville Presbyterian Church.

He was married to the former Patsy Mick Arbaugh Lambert of Riverton, who survives.  Also surviving is his former wife, Alfleda Vandevander of Cherry Grove.

Other survivors include four daughter, Sudie Harris, Riverton, Maggie Arbaugh, Cabins, Ruby Simmons, Franklin and Linda WImer, Cherry Grove; three step-daughters, Linda Arbaugh, Riverton, Rebecca Wolford, Morgantwon, and Shirley Parsons, Harrisonburg, VA; three sons, Varley G. Lambert, Jr., and Delbert Lambert both of Singers Glen, VA, and George Lambert, Stuart, VA; one sister, Erma Nuckols, Mt. Crawford, VA; two brothers, Ira Bill Lambert, Austin, TX, and Hansel Lambert, Mt. Crawford, VA; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; eight brothers and two sisters. 

The Rev. William Cox will conduct the funeral today at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial will be at the North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton. 

The family received friends from 6-8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. 

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice. 

Willard Calvin Judy, 82

Willard Calvin Judy, 82, Rough Run, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

 Mr. Judy was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Rough Run and was the son of the late Jacob E. Judy and Zillah Sites Judy. 

He was a lifelong farmer and truck driver.  He was a member of Hedrick Chapel United Methodist Church in Rough Run. 

His wife of 63 years, Sara Sue Kite Judy, survives. 

Also surviving are a son roger L. Judy of Petersburg; two daughters, Gwen J. Bland of Cabins and Jeanette Wright of Franklin; two sisters, Mayselle Kile, a resident of Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg, and Mary W. Shobe of Hagerstown, MD; seven grandchildren, Jill Judy Smith, Vincent Bland, Denise Judy Crites, Bridget Judy Vance, Mitzi Judy, Jason Redman and C.J. Redman Dolly; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The Revs. Michael E. Taylor and Steve Davis conducted the funeral 1 p.m. Sunday  at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, Burial was in the Dorcas Baptist Cemetery in Dorcas. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Dorcas Baptist Cemetery Fund.  

Ethel M. Alt

Ethel M. Alt, 85, of the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin, and formerly of Upper Tract, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at the nursing home where she had lived for several years. 

Mrs. Alt was born Dec, 19, 1917, in Mozer and was a daughter of the late Perry M. Ratliff and Lena S. Kesner Ratliff.

 She was a homemaker and had been employed at the Franklin Garment Company.  She was a member of Christ Central Community Church in Upper Tract. 

On Oct. 21, 1958, she married Joseph C. Alt, who preceded her in death Jan. 17, 1961. 

She is survived by five sisters, Ersley Whetzel and Hazel Simmons, both of Franklin, Vada Mallow of Kline, Genevieve May of Maysville, and Nancy Mongold of Rough Run; two brothers, Arthur Ratliff of Harrisonburg, VA, and Homer Ratliff of Baltimore, MD; a number of nieces and nephews. 

She was also preceded in death by three brothers. 

The Rev. Ed Null conducted the funeral 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Central Community Church in Upper Tract.  Burial was at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Kenneth H. Smith, 22

Kenneth Heiskell Smith, 22, of Maysville, died Wednesday, may 14, 2003, at the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, FL. 

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 18, 1980, in Manassas, VA, and was the son of Isaac H. Smith of Maysville and the late Kay Herron Smith Yokum. 

SUrviving in addition to his father is a stepfather, Robert Yokum of Elkins; four sisters, Debbie Vizcaya of Augusta, Donna Bucklew of Moorefield, Phyllis Sweeney of Stafford, VA, and Eleanor Miller of Riverton; three brothers, Danny Hubbard of Clanton, AL, Isaac R. Smith and Charles W. Smith, both of Maysville; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Floda Smith; and maternal grandparents, Ezra and Mildred Herron. 

Dr. Ken Smith and the Rev. Charles Snyder conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was in the Lahmansville Cemetery in Lahmansville. 

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. 

Donald Ray Mitchell

On Monday, May 12, 2003, at 10:15 p.m., while a patient at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown, heaven's door was opened for Donald Ray Mitchell to enter after a courageous year-long battle with acute myelogenous leukemia. 

Mr. Mitchell was born in Harrisonburg, VA, May 23, 1941, weighing just two and one-half pounds, the youngest child of Santa Anna and Gertrude Etta Harman Mitchell.  He called Upper Tract home his entire life.

He descended from several of the early families of Pendleton County: Borror, Fitzwater, Harman, Henckel, Judy, Lough, Mischler, and Sites.

Mr. Mitchell's life revolved around farming.  His love of the land and the miracle of life that he experienced daily was evident in his pride in and devotion to his occupation.  His labors provided well for the deer, wild turkeys, rabbits, blue birds and bald eagles that call the farm home. He enjoyed his membership and fellowship with the Spruce Knob Ruritan Club until farm responsibilities curtailed his involvement. 

He was also devoted to the Lord of his life; his involvement in the Church of the Brethren, Christ Central Church, and the Circleville United Methodist Church was very important to him.

On September 29, 1990, he was united in marriage with Lorella Lee Nelson at the Circleville United Methodist Church where they were both members.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sisters, Charlotte Wratchford of Martinsburg, Ethel and husband Oscar Chapman of Martinsburg, and Arletta and husband Mike Molinari of Burke, VA; one brother, William, and wife Kathy of Pigeon Forge, TN; four sisters-in-law, Pauline of Falls Church, VA, Anna Lee and Velma Lantz, both of Franklin and margery of Norman, OK; a brother-in-law, James Frank of Topeka, KS; his mother-in-law, Iris Nelson of Circleville, to whom he was like a son; 12 nieces, 13 nephews, and a number of great-nieces and nephews. 

Mr. Mitchell was totally devoted to his family - his wife, mother-in-law, sisters and brothers and their families. 

He was especially proud to be called uncle by five young people, Maria Pomales, Rebecca, Brittany, and Amanda Ruckman, and Derek Bailey, who loved to frequently spend time with him on the farm; Stanley Simmons, with the support of his wife, Kay, became an on-sight brother to him as they shared almost every day on the farm together during the past year. 

He was preceded in death by a sister, Violet Frank, brothers, Allen Lee, Melvin Lonza, Arthur Guy, Harlan "Bud", and Ronald, an infant sister, a sister-in-law, Joan, a brother-in-law Eugene Wratchford, a niece, and two nephews. 

The celebration of Mr. Mitchell's life was held Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at the Circleville United Methodist Church; interment followed at the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.  

Memorials may be made to the Gideon Memorial Bible program, with each Bible projected to touch 2300 lives.
