John Hammer, Sr 

John William Hammer, Sr., 87, of Franklin died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin. 

Mr. Hammer was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Weston and was the son of the late Zed Pierce Hammer and Gay Jewel Hammer. 

Mr. Hammer received his bachelor of science and masters degrees in agriculture from West Virginia Universtiy (WVU).  He was captain of his WVU wrestling team and was a loyal WVU Mountaineer fan for 65 years.

He was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. 

 Four-H and farmers were a big part of his life.  He retired in July, 1975, after 32 years as an Agricultural Extension Agent in Pendleton County.  Hammer was instrumental in many of the buildings at Thorn Spring Park.  He had many 4-H livestock judging teams win state and national awards.  He devoted many years to the youth and the farmers in Pendleton County.  

He was also a Christmas tree grower and loved his tree farm. 

Hammer was a member of the Franklin Lions Club for 50 years, a member of the Pendleton Lodge No. 144 AF & AM for 50 years, a life member of the VFW Post No. 2370 and a member of Franklin United Methodist Church. 

His wife of 56 years, Mary George Spangler, preceded him in death on Nov. 28, 1998. 

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Robert Durrer of Charlottesville, VA; a son, Dr. John William Hammer Jr., of Phoenix, AZ; a brother James Richard Hammer of Pineola, NC, seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Kristen, Susan, Kassandra, Caroline, Laura and Evan; and two great-grandchildren, Jade and Dawson.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Katherine, and two brothers, Brooke and Frank. 

The Rev. David Fisher conducted the funeral Monday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  burial with military gravesides services conducted by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin. 

Memorial donations may be made to the WVU 4-H Foundation or the Pendleton County Rescue Squads.   

Helene C. Propst, 47

Helene C. Propst, 47, of Moyers, W. VA., died Tuesday, May 4 ,2004, in Ohio. 

Mrs. Propst was born Sept. 9, 1956, and was the daughter of  Lionel and Suzanne Clouet of Twinsburg, OH. 

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Moyes, where she held many elected and volunteer positions. 

Also surviving are her husband, Steve; two sons, Nathan and Christopher; two sisters, Lise Zilbert and Katleen Flak, and five nieces and nephews. 

Dr. Cecil D. Bradfield conducted a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John Lutheran Church in Moyers. 

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. 

F.J. Corrigan Funeral Services in Orange Village, OH, handled arrangements. 

Melvin D. Alt

Melvin D. Alt, 89, of Catonsville, MD, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at his home following a brief illness. 

Mr. Alt was born Marcy 23, 1915, in Branch and was a son of the late George Edward Alt and Emma Shreve Alt. 

He retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1980 after 35 years of service.  He was a farmer and a member of the church of the Advent in Baltimore, MD. 

He survived by his wife of 70 years, Imogene Kimble Shreve Alt, whom he married july 4, 1934. 

Also surviving are two daughters, Polly Gardenghi of Catonsville, MD, and Judith Wiley of Severna Park, MD; two sons, Joseph Alt of Catonsville, MD, and Jerry Alt of Glen Burnie, MD; a brother, Vernon Alt of Petersburg; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandhcildren and one great-great-grandson.

he was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Alt and Forrest Alt. 

The Rev. Christopher Keene conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at Wilson Chapel Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Robyn R. Casey, 40

Robyn R. Casey, 40, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 10, 2004 at home with her family at her side. 

Born on March 21, 1964, in Petersburg, she was the daughter of David and Nancy Fulk. 

She was a graduate of Camp Hill High School and most recently was employed at Zurick- Maryland  Insurance Corporation, where she was a senior claims representive. 

Mrs. Casey enjoyed spending time traveling the world with friends and family and living life to the fullest.  She had a passion for photography, reading and gardening and just about any activity that she co8uld plan to spend time socially with friends and family.  

She was a member of the Garden Club, The Wine Society of Central Pennsylvania and was unstoppable at Poker.  She volunteered at Pinnacle Health Women's Center and was a committee member for Magic Night. 

Surviving are her husband of ten years, Ritner Casey of Harrisburg, PA, and her brother David Fulk II of Weirton.  

The memorial service was held at 6:30 p.m. on May 13 at the Camp Hill United Methodist Church, 4175 22nd Street, Camp Hill, PA, with the Rev. Dr. Dennis R. Keller officiating.
