William D. Hottinger, 70 of Fort Seybert, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Hottinger was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Fort Seybert and was a son of the late Isaac and Lena Viola Dove Hottinger.

He retired after being a poultry grower for over 30 years. He was a veteran and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Bethlehem Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Nesselrodt Hottinger, whom he married Jun 29, 1967; five sisters, Mae Harold of Harrisonburg, VA, Gay Marvin, Buena Vista, VA, Faye Calhoun and Mary Dasher, both of Fort Seybert, and Kay Hamman of Stephens City, VA; three brothers, Albert Hottinger of Harrisonburg, VA, and Fred and Dee Hottinger, both of Fort Seybert; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters.

The Rev. B. Eugene Shaver conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandywine with military rites by the Veteran's Honor Guard of Grant county and the JROTC.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rockingham Memorial Regional Cancer Center, Harrisonburg, VA.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Arlie C. Lough, 81, of Cumberland, MD, and formerly of Hagerstown, MD, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Memorial Hospital.

Born June 3, 1920, in Franklin, he was the son of the late Howard Lough and Hattie (Glover) Lough. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth P. (Starliper) Lough; two brothers, Walter W. Lough and Raymond K. Lough; and two sisters, Myrtle E. Hartman and Marie H. Swanson.

Mr. Lough was retired from Hoffman Clothing, Inc., in Hagerstown, MD, with 35 years of service. He was a member of Central Assembly of God Church, the American Legion in Ridgeley, and the VFW Post No. 1541. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 5th Army Artillery seeing battle in New Guinea and Philippines. He will be sadly missed by his many friends at the Cumberland Arms, where he so generously cared and assisted them with his artistic ability for seasonal decor.

He is survived by three brothers, J. "Jim" Russell Lough, Robert C. Lough, both of Cumberland, MD, and H. Leon Lough, Washington, D.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., in Cumberland, MD, with Pastor Douglas Seaman officiating.

Interment was in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, MD.

Military Honors were accorded at the ceremony by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

Hilda Marie Crigler Leichsenring, 77, of Amana, IO, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IO.

Mrs. Leichsenring was born Friday, May 15, 1925, in Franklin and was the fifth daughter of the late Albert Boyd and Eva Lambert Crigler.

She received her education in the Franklin schools and graduated from Franklin High School Class of 1944. After graduation she was employed at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, MD.

On Nov. 17, 1945, she married Alfred Jack Leichsenring at Hagerstown, MD. After her husband's discharge from the U.S. Army in 1947, the couple returned to his home in Amana, IO.

She was employed at Amana Refrigeration and was a waitress at Ronneberg Restaurant in Amana , IO. She and her husband operated the South Amana Sandwich Shop.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Monte, and wife, Christine of Clarion; a daughter, Cody, and her husband, Robert of Marengo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a sister , Frances Glover of Franklin; and a brother, Alfred, also of Franklin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Alma Hinkle, Thelma Ruddle and Irene Stickley.

Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Middle Amana Community Church, Middle, IO.

Mrs. Leichsenring's home church was the Franklin Presbyterian, Franklin. The Holy Spirit is divine calling my baby sister into Heaven, the perfect place with the perfect Master, forever and perfect peace for the sister remaining on earth.

Roger J. Corn of Baltimore, MD, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002.

Mr. Corn was the beloved husband of Reta M. (nee Harper), formerly of Franklin; devoted father of Debbie Ruley and her husband, Steve, David Corn and his wife, Donna, Rhonda Seigley and her husband, Joseph, and Sheila and her late husband, Roger J. Corn, Jr.; dear brother of Fawn Stokes; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Corn was the son-in-law of Roscoe T. and the late Bessie Harper of Franklin. He had many friends in the Franklin area.

Funeral services were conducted at the Connelly Funeral Home of Essex, MD, with interment in Moreland Memorial Cemetery.

Mona Helen Harman Cooper , 91, of Grafton, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at the residence of her daughter in Silver Springs, MD.

Mrs. Cooper was born in West Virginia, July 17, 1910, a daughter of the late Omar and Zora Harman.

Her husband, Herman Cooper, preceded her in death in 1965.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charles "Donna" McEldowney of Silver Springs, MD; a brother Elseworth Harman of Seneca Rocks; two granddaughters, Mrs. Brian "Jena" Meredith and Mrs. Tom "Christy" Erwin, both of Columbia, MD; 2 great-granddaughters and one great-grandson; one sister, and three brothers.

Mrs. Cooper was a former member of the Trinity UMC, and now a member of the Blueville UMC and was an active member of the Woman's Club of Grafton.

Mr. and Mrs. Cooper opened the Cooper's Lunch in 1934 at Grafton. Then in 1952, Mr. Cooper opened the Taylor County Farm Supply of Grafton. After his death in 1965, Mrs. Cooper continued to own and operate the business until she retired in 1975.

The family received friends at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, Clarksburg, with a funeral service held at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Amy Shanholtzer officiated and interment was in the Bridgeport Cemetery.

Sherman Roscoe Thompson, 76, of Hinton, VA, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Thompson was born Nov. 24, 1925, in Ruddle and was a son of the late Samuel Roscoe and Bessie A. Thompson.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He had been employed by Shen-Gas, Johnny Whetzel, Shenandoah's Pride, Denton's Furniture, and Harrisonburg Auto Auction until his retirement.

Mr. Thompson was a member of the E.U.B. Church in Ruddle and Rion-Bowman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 632 in Harrisonburg, VA.

On Oct. 14, 1946, he married Eva Lee Bland, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Larry Sherman Thompson and Terry Allen Thompson, Sr., both of Hinton, VA; three brothers, Alston Thompson of Franklin, Donald Thompson of Linville, VA, and Jerry Thompson of Hinton, VA; and two grandsons.

Mr. Paul Crumley conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA. Burial followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg, VA, with military rites by Rion-Bowman VFW Post 632.

Iris Gertrude Ansel, 81, of Springfield, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Ansel was born Feb. 13, 1921, at Deer Run and was a daughter of the late Ora and Elizabeth Black Hamilton.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Springfield United Methodist Church. She was an active volunteer for the Springfield CEOS for nearly 50 years, an active volunteer for the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department Fire Auxiliary and was an honorary member. She was a faithful patron of the Hampshire County Library.

Her husband, Wilson Monroe Ansel, preceded her in death Sept 19, 1985.

Surviving are one son, Fred O. Ansel, Springfield; four daughters, Rebecca W. Poland and Elizabeth A. Morgan, both of Romney, and Linda Sue Mongold and Nannie L. Ansel, both of Springfield, two brothers, Frederick Hamilton, Cross Junction, VA, and Charles Hamilton, Harrisonburg, VA; one sister, Norma Suter, Harrisonburg, VA; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney with Pastor Deborah Shreve officiating.

Interment followed in the Springfield Hill Cemetery, Springfield.

Benjamin Franklin Berg, 59, Maysville, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Cahrlottesville, VA.

Mr. Berg was born May 23, 1942, in Maysville and was a son of the late Hershel B. Berg and Myrtle Ann Alt Berg.

He was a member of the Petersburg Church of God, a charter member of the North Fork Ruritan Club and served in the U.S. Navy.

On Feb. 5, 1972, he married Karen Sue Parsons, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Kimberly S. Goldizen of Maysville; a sister, Mary Ann Ratcliff, Maysville; a brother, Marvin E. Berg, Maysville; and three grandchildren.

The Revs. R. Dale Sharp and Ernest C. Pennington conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Friday at the Petersburg Church of God. Burial was at the Kline Cemetery in Kline with military by the combined veterans organizations of Grant County and the Petersburg High School JROTC.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaeffer Funeral Home.
