Percy Hugh Poore

Percy Hugh Poore, 89, of Ft. Washington, MD, died May 12, 2008, at his residence. 

Born Nov. 2, 1918, at Brighton, AL, he was the son of the late Felix and Emma Crockett Poore.

He was a retired master plumber and steam fitter.  He attended schools in Brighton, AL, and was a member of Providence Untied Methodist Church.  

His wife, Mary Christabelle Lambert, Formerly of Riverton, preceded him in death on Aug. 28, 2002. 

Surviving ar eone daughter, Julia Ann Hilgenberg and husband, Ricahrd of Huntingtown, Md; one son, Tom Poore of Ft. Washington, MD; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Callie and Ashlyn Hilgenberg of Huntingtown, MD: one niece Gloria Lindquist of Easton, MD: and a caregiver, Singh Praim of Fort Washington, MD.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Riverton United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Victor L. Simpson officiating.  Burial will be in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton. 

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Chappell and Mae Smith. 

Memorials may be made to any hospice organization.  

The family will receive friends today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.  

Roy E. Alt, 79

Roy Edward Alt, 79, of Cabins, died Friday, May 9, 2008, at the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg.

Mr. Alt was born May 30, 1928, in Smoke Hole and was the son of the late Enoch Alt and Sarah Ratcliff Alt. 

He was a member of the West Virginia Laborer's Local 984 in Clarksburg. 

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

First wife, Irene Mae VanMeter Alt, preceded him in death.  

His second wife, Lucy Joy Ours Engle Alt, survives. 

Also surviving are a step-son, Matthew O. Engle and wife, Joyce of Cabins; one step-daughter, Teresa A. Barr and husband, Donnie Barr Sr. of Petersburg; three step-grandchldren, Donnie Barr Jr. and wife, Suenette of Petersburg, Brent Barr and wife Amanda, of Rivesville and Brian Engle and wife, Angie of Maysville; nine step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, William Vinton Alt; and four sisters, infant Arvella Alt, Mildred Rohrbaugh, Velma Stump and Catherine Alt. 

The Rev. Joseph Eversole and Pastor Calvin Redman, Sr. conducted the funeral  Monday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.  Burial was in Maysville Cemetery, Maysville.

Damien Phares, Infant

Damien Richard Phares, infant son son of Richard P. and Jamie O. Sions Phares of Petersburg died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown where he was born May 5.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by four brothers, Eric Phares, Christian Phares, Dakota Kline and Montana Kline; four sisters, Ashley Armstrong, Miranda Kline, Jadelyn Phares and Morgan Phares; maternal grandparents, Randy and Brandi Sions of Moorefield and Peggy Sions of Cabins and Richard P. Phares Sr. of Riverton; great-grandmothers, Nellie Sions of Purgitsville and Roxie Shirk of Petersburg.

Pastor Ken Burkhart conducted the funeral Tuesday at Mountain View Community Church in Old Fields.  Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery.

Audrey Beverage, 90

Audrey Lou Harper Beverage, 90, of Blue Grass, VA, died Friday, May 9, 2008, at her residence. 

She was born Feb. 8, 1918, at Blue Grass, VA, a daughter of the late Orion Olen and Abbie Lou (Chew) Harper.

On Aug. 7, 1936, she married Henry Martin Beverage, who preceded her in death Sept. 13, 1992. She also was predeceased by a son, Dale Beverage, and a brother, Max Harper.

Mrs. Beverage was a member of Blue Grass United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Jean and Carl Lee Simmons of Blue Grass, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Thelma Beverage of Monterey, VA; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Beverage of McDowell, VA; eight grandchildren, Dean Beverage and wife, Kathy, Stuart Simmons, Wilton Simmons and wife, Tammy, Elizabeth Varner and husband, Eddie, Cindy Wood and husband, Jeff, Steven Beverage, Stephanie Bradley and husband, Dennis Jr., and Stacie Truslow and husband, Allen; six great-grandchildren, Wendy Harmon, Lori Beverage, Bethany and Rachel Truslow, Kirsten Wood and Russell Varner; a step-great-grandson, Tyler Arbaugh; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Iva Harper of Cave

She was also preceded in death by a son, Dale Beverage, and a brother, Max Harper.

A funeral service was conducted Monday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, by the Revs. Andre Crummett and Richard Gibson. Burial was in Beverage Memorial Cemetery on Strait Creek,VA.

Lewis "Shawn" Rexrode

Lewis "Shawn" Rexrode, 34, of Bridgewater, VA, died Saturday May 10, 2008.  He was born August 8, 1973, in Harrisonburg, VA. 

Rexrode attended St. Paul Independent Lutheran Church.  He graduated from Franklin High School and worked for C.W. Hurt as an equipment operator.  He loved the mountains and enjoyed tractor pulling.

Surviving is his wife, Dorothy Marie Rexrode of Bridgewater, VA, whom he married August 16, 1997.  

Also surviving are his father and step-mother, Orville Lee and Bonnie Rexrode of Sugar Grove; two step-daughters, Deanna Whitsel of Harrisonburg, VA, and Jessica Smith of Briery Branch VA; three step-grandsons, who lived with him; a brother, Gary Rexrode of Sugar Grove; a niece, Mindy Rexrode; and a nephew, Bryan Lee Rexrode. 

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Emmett and Clona Rexrode. 

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA, by the REv. Jerry Smith nd Rev. Rob Borror.  Burial will be in the family cemetery in Moyers.  

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. 

Bernice P. Arey, 80

Bernice Pope Arey, 80, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Sunday May 11, 2008, at Oak Lea Nursing Home after a short illness. 

Mrs. Arey was born in Brandywine on Dec. 19, 1927, and was the daughter of the late Roy P. and Naomi M. (Swauger) Pope.  

She graduated from Franklin High School and attended Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA. In her earlier years, she had worked at Kawneer, Walker Manufacturing and Wampler Foods, in addition to helping on the family farm.  She lived most of her life on the farm, located on the east side of Little North Mountain.  She had made her home with her daughter, Sharon on a portion of the farm since 1995.

One of her greatest loves was her home state of West Virginia and all her friends and acquaintances there.  She also was known for her cooking ability, preparing big meals for farm hands, friends and family in her large kitchen on the family farm. 

Mrs. Arey was a lifelong and faithful member of Mt. Bethel Church of the Brethren in Lilly, VA, and was a member of the Homebuilders Sunday School Class.  She was also a member of Carl D. Lee VFW Post 9872 Ladies Auxiliary.  She loved  her friends permitted, she enjoyed traveling and had visited Australia, New Zealand, Erope, Alaska, Hawaii and numerous other places in the continental United States. 

In 1948, she married Stanford Eagle Arey, who preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 1990. 

Surviving are family members include two daughters, Sharon Showalter, and husband, Richard of Harrisonburg, VA, Yvonne Michael and husband, James of Elkton, VA; two sons, Greg Arey and wife, Connie of Harrisonburg, VA, and Tony Arey and wife, Linda of Harrisonburg, VA; one brother, Roy Pope Jr. of Timberville, VA; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Bob Pope.

A graveside service was held Wednesday at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.  The Rev. John Jantzi conducted a memorial service at Mt. Bethel Church of the Brethren.

In lieu fo flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Mt. Bethel Church of the Brethren, 8550 Robinson Road, Dayton, VA  22821. 

McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, VA, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
