Irene V. Smith, 79

Irene V. Smith, 79, of  Petersburg, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins. 

Mrs. Smith was born July 31, 1923, in Little Hocking, OH, and was the daughter of the late Curtis F. and Hazel Gittings Hill. 

She graduated from Parkersburg Business college and was in the real estate business with her husband for over 50 years.  They were also the onwers of the New Fronteir Restaurant and Motel in Franklin for many years.  

Mrs. Smith was a 50 year member of the Petersburg chapter No. 146 Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the American LEgion Auxiliary.  She was a former Grant County 4-H leader and the first president of the Grant Memorial Hopsital Auxiliary. 

Her husband, Wilson H. Smith preceded her in death in June 1990.

She is survived by three daughters, Ruby Marie Still and husband, David, of Parkersburg, Janet S. Frye of Petersburg, and Sylvia I. Smith of Morgantown; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg.  Burial was at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church.  

Wilbur Clifton Moats, 73

Wilbur Clifton Moats, 74, of Franklin, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at his home. 

Mr. Moats was born May 3, 1930, in Moyers and was a son of the late Jarrett Moats and Dane Redman Moats.  

He retired in 1971 as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer with 23 years of service.  He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and also served shore duty in Bermuda.  He was a member of the Moats Chapel A.M.E. Church. 

Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Diane Moats of Los Angeles, CA, and Stephanie Young of Oakville, MD; two sons, Raymond Moats, Hampton, VA, and Wilbur Moats, Jr. of Lexington Park, MD; five sisters, mabel Jones, Irene Moats, Patty Moats, and Minnie Moats, all of Staunton, VA, and Dolly Johnson of Stuarts Draft, VA; three brothers, Arthur Moats of Norfolk, VA, Walter Moats of Harrisonburg, VA, and LeRoy Moats of Staunton, VA; three grandchildren, Tony Moats, Tiara and Melissa Young; and one great-granddaughter, Nyla. 

In addtion to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sons, Shawn Moats and Ronald Moats; two brothers, Daniel Moats and virgil Moats; and two sisters, Elizabeth (Cookie Moore and Delia Louisa Kennah. 

Elder Thomas Johnson and the Rev. Jackie Doresey conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Jarrett Moats cemetery in Moyers. 

Roy C. Roberson

Roy Curtis Roberson, 82, of Franklin, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at his home. 

Mr. Roberson was born April 16, 1921, in Ruddle and was a son of the late Mack C. Roberson and Eva Hedrick Roberson. 

He retired in 1989 as owner and operator of Roy's Atlantic Service Station for 29 years.  He was employed by Pendleton Motor Sales for 15 years and by Sites Chevrolet in Franklin.  He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

On December 22, 1941, he married the former Mabel Marie Simmons, who survives. 

He is also survived by a daughter, Wendy Huffman and a son, Stephen Roberson, both of Franklin; three sisters, Retha George, Eula Black and Elma Roberson, all of Ruddle; two brothers, Edwin Roberson and Alden Roberson, both of Ruddle, five grandchildren, Stephen Lee Roberson of Moyers, Amy Roberson of Franklin, Daniel Roberson of Eileson AFB, Alaska, and Torrey and Stephanie Huffman of Franklin; and two great-grandchildren, Katrina and Monica Roberson.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Roberson and Arlin Hedrick. 

Dr. Richard Young conducted the funeral 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department.

Donald R. Mitchell, 61

Donald R. Mitchell, 61, of Upper Tract, died Monday, May 12, at Monongalia County General Hospital in Morgantown. 

Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home, Franklin, were incomplete at press time. 

 Ethel M. Alt, 85

Ethel M. Alt, 85, formerly of Upper Tract, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin, where she had been a resident for several years.
