Nellie Frances VanMeter

Nellie Frances Full VanMeter, 90, of Maysville and formerly of Upper Tract died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. VanMeter was a homemaker. She was a member and attended the Brushy Run Church of God in Upper Tract.

Surviving are three daughters, Katheryn Armentrout and husband, Sam of New Market, VA, Amanda Franco of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Connie Alt and husband, Dannie of Maysville; one step-daughter, Edna Grimm and husband, Ernest of Timberville, VA; one son, Ivan Full of Maysville; five grandchildren; and 19 stepgrandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one step-son, William H. VanMeter; two step-daughters, Rhoda Reel and Dora Reel; and three step-grandsons.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg with Rev. Bruce Cosner officiating. Interment was at the Wilson Chapel Cemetery, Upper Tract.

Ralph Harlan Mallow, 87, of Franklin passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center, Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Mallow retired after working 18 years for the WV Department of Highways. He graduated from Franklin High School and was a farmer.

He was married to Ara Nelson Mallow, who preceded him in death May, 1990, and to Mary Mae Botkin Mallow, who preceded him in death Feb. 23, 2005.

Surviving are a daughter, Ella Calhoun and husband, Jeff of Urbana, OH; two sons, Jeff Mallow and wife, Paula of Harrisonburg, VA, and Kevin Mallow of Franklin; a brother Richard Mallow of Harrisonburg, VA; three grandchildren, Kristie, Danielle and Kevin Mallow, Jr.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Mallow; two sisters, Helen Sherwood and Ella Katheryn Mallow.

Delsie Strawderman Whetzel, 87, of Singers Glenn, VA, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in Harrisonburg, VA.

After 87 years of loving her family and friends, she is now in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior. Her love has surrounded, enfolded and embraced everyone she knew.

She was born Aug. 6, 1923, in Needmore and was a daughter of the late Charlie Strawderman and Nannie Miller Strawderman Albright.

She worked at the Virginia Mennonite Home, before retiring in 1985. She was a member of Morning View Mennonite Church in Singers Glen. VA.

Mrs. Whetzel was good at many things, sewing, canning and cooking, but she was especially good at loving and caring for others, especially her six children who survive.

Surviving are five daughters, Peggy Nicholson of Concord, NC, Betty Lawson and husband, Tommy of Madison VA, Marcia Warner and husband, Harry of Franklin, Donna Miller and husband, Harold of Tasboro, NC, and Judy Coffman of Stuarts Draft, VA; and a son Gary Whetzel and wife, Stella of Penn Laird, VA; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, whom she adored.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday at Morning View Mennonite Church with Pastors Richard Gullman and Rawley Rhodes officiating. Burial was at Martin Luther Lutheran Church cemetery in Bergton, VA.

Mrs. Vandevander attended Dahmer Schools and was a homemaker and a mother. She was a member of the Smith Creek Church of the Brethren, where she was a lifetime deacon for over 50 years, was a Sunday School teacher for 40 years, taught Bible School, was a member of the choir and a member of the ladies aid. She was a member of Pendleton County Farm Bureau for 40 years. She enjoyed wild flowers and birds and collected fourleaf clovers.

Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Vandevander of Franklin; a son, Lynn Vandevander and wife, Carol of Franklin; a sister, Elvira Crummett of Pendleton Manor; two granddaughters, Amy Vandevander Taylor and husband, Devon of Berkeley Springs, and Holly Vandevander of Fairmont.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Arvin Dahmer; and four sisters, Rose Dahmer, Arla Sponaugle, Verona Pitsenbarger and Ella Mullenax.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Smith Creek Church of the Brethren with Rev. Max Fisher and Rev. Mario R. Claro. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin.

Guy Miley, 89, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehab with his family by his side.

He managed the family poultry farm for many years following the death of his father in 1945. He was a member of the Dale Enterprise Fast Pitch Softball team and a member of Harrisonburg Mennonite Church.

Also surviving are two step-sons, Wayne Eugene Heatwole and wife, Carole of Harrisonburg, VA, and Gary Wilson Heatwole of Ormond Beach, FL; one sister, Ethel Bentch of Harrisonburg, VA; three brothers, Dale Mile and wife, Nan of Edgewater, MD, Gar Miley and wife, Peggy of Harrisonburg, VA, and Richard Miley of Roanoke, VA; five step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Harrisonburg, VA, with Pastors Mark Keller and Jim Grogan officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens.

She was born Feb. 19, 1923, at Smith Creek and was the daughter of the late Albert Ross Simmons and Levie Susan Lambert Simmons.

Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie G. Mitchell and husband, Roger of Upper Tract and Judy A. Ralston and husband, David of Monterey, VA; one son, Danny C. And wife, Margaret of Franklin; two sisters, Ruby Propst and husband, Ira of Franklin, and Reba Wiseman of Winter Haven, FL; one grandson, Stacy Waggy of Franklin; a number of nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Ramona Luckel and Anna Tesi and husband, Brian; and a number of great nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Stanley Kile officiating. Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin.

He attended Berea College in Kentucky and had a master’s degree in forest pathology from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in pharmacology from the Medical College of Virginia.

Prior to retirement, he was employed as a U.S. forester and later as a pharmacist for 30 years and was co-owner of Peoples Pharmacy in Stuarts Draft, VA.

He was a member of Greenville United Methodist Church, Stuarts Draft VFW, the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association, the American Pharmaceutical Association and the Lions Club and was active in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Organization, where he mentored Patrick Guffey and Steven Carter.

Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. David James and Elizabeth Greenawalt of Prattville, AL; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah (Greenawalt) and Gene Straley of Harrisonburg, VA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Ruth Greenawalt of Harrisonburg, VA, and Forest and Rachel Greenawalt of Burbonnais, IL; a sister, Twila Greenawalt Muterspaugh of Harrisonburg, VA; a sister-in-law, Arvella Greenawalt of Upper Tract; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Jonathan, Rosemarie, Kaitlyn and Nathan Greenawalt and Rebecca and Andrew Straley and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Willie, Carl, Fred and Hugh; a sister, Geneva and two grandchildren, Allison and Thomas Straley.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday in Greenville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Harris. Burial followed in Augusta Memorial Park.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held Saturday, May 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Harold Cullers officiating. Inurnment will be at the Kline Cemetery.
