Christine Armentrout, 71

Christine Helene Armentrout, 71, of Petersburg died Sunday, may 7, 2006, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. 

Mrs. Armentrout was born Oct 14, 1934, in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, and was a daughter of the late Martin Seitz and Katherine Enders Seitz. 

She and her husband were owners and managers of Armentrout's Store in Petersburg for 38 years.

she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond G. Armentrout, on Sept. 9, 1992. 

Survivors include three sons, David G. Armentrout and Kevin E. Armentrout, both of Petersburg and John A. Armentrout of Kathleen, GA; three sisters, Anna Holman of Baltimore , MD, Marianna Andreschefski of Kassel, Germany, and Sophie Seitz of Germany; and two grandchildren, Jason T. Armentrout and Christine M. Armentrout. 

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Frederick Seitz and Wilhelm Seitz. 

The Rev. Gary Phillips will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. today at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, Burial will be at Kline Cemetery, Kline. 

Memorial donations  may be made to the American Heart Fund. 

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  

Ruth Cowger 

Ruth Cowger, 83, of Fort Seybert died Thursday, May 4, 2006, at her home. 

Ms. Cowger was born March 31, 1923, in Fort Seybert and was a daughter of the late John Preston Cowger and Nora Mae Dyer Cowger.

She graduated from Franklin High School, attended Ohio Wesleyan university, University of Rhode Island and Strayer Business college.  She retired in 1985 as a administrative secretary at the Naval War College in Newport, RI.  She was a member of Fairview Bethel United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include two daughters Anne Dyer Fischer and Elizabeth Ruddle, both of Fort Seybert; a sister, Janet Cowger of Harrisonburg, VA; a brother, John Cowger and wife, Phyllis of Singers Glen, VA, and five grandchildren, Damian Christy, Laura Fischer, Sara Redman, Jessie Ruddle and Kate Ruddle.  

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Roland Cowger. 

The Rev. Mark James conducted a graveside service Monday at Fairview Cemetery in Fort Seybert. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton Rescue Squads. 

Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, was in charge of funeral arrangements.  

Richard E. Short

Richard E. Short, 69, of Brandywine walked into the loving arms of his Lord on Monday, May 1, 2006, as the result of a vehicle accident. 

Born in Brandywine, on June 2, 1936, he was the son of the late Charlena Nelson short Scott. 

He was a graduate of Franklin High School, class of 1955, Dunsmore Business College, B.S. Industrial Arts, Fairmont State College, B.S. Education, and Virginia State College, Masters Education.  he was an Army veteran, 1955-1958, serving 13 months in combat during the Korean Conflict.  He was a member of the Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren, Brandywine.

He was an industrial arts teacher in Henrico County, Richmond, VA, served on the Pendleton County Board of Education and was director of transportation, child nutrition, assistant superintendent and superintendent.  

He was the owner of Brandywine Cablevision, which serves the Brandywine and Sugar Grove.  He began construction of the system in 1983 and was the sole operator until two years ago when his health forced him to administer the operation.

Mr. Short will be deeply missed by those that truly loved him.  He was so kind, patient and understanding with those around him. 

He is survived by a fiancee; three half brothers, nieces, nephews, other family and friends. 

Mr. Short was also preceded in death by three sisters. 

In honoring his wishes, services and burial was private with interment at Pine Hill Cemetery, Brandywine.

Patsy D. Casto 

Patsy D. Harman Casto, 62, of Mozer died Sunday, May 7, 2006, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg. 

Mrs. Casto was born Sept. 11, 1943, in Mozer and was a daughter of Blanche Kesner Harman of Mozer and the late Stanley Harman. 

She graduated from Franklin High School in 1961.  She worked in Washington DC, for Insurance Company of North America and the Central Intelligence Agency for several years.  She and her husband returned to West Virginia in 1983.  She managed Flinn's Family Store in Petersburg and later worked for the IGA Store in Franklin. She was a member of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church. 

In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Marlin L. Casto; a daughter, Donna Mallow and husband, Leonard of Kline; a son John W. Casto and a friend, Brenda Rohrbaugh, and her daughter, Shaleena of Scherr; a brother, Gary Harman and wife, Ramona of Mozer; a sister, Judy Patch and husband, Tom of Mozer; three grandchildren, Tara, Seara and Trina Mallow; and a special aunt, Arletta Sears of Petersburg.  

The Revs. Gary Phillips and Glen Hamric conducted the funeral Wednesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.  Burial was at Kline Cemetery, Kline. 

Memorial donations may be to Mount Horeb United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Janice M. Dow, 69

Janice M. Dow, 69, of Gorham, ME, went to be with her Lord, Saturday, April 29, 2006, at a Portland, ME, hospital after a courageous battle with medical problems. 

Born in Gorham, ME, on Sept. 9, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Maurice W. and Annette T. Winship Bragdon and was a 1954 graduate of Gorham High School. 

Mrs. Dow had worked in the Gorham School Lunch Program and was a lifelong homemaker.  She had traveled extensively during her husband's military career.  she was a member of south Limington Baptist church and active in its choir.  For many years, she was active in the West Gorham Union Church and its choir, as well as the North Pole Baptist church in Alaska.   

On July 9, 1955, she married Frederick A. Dow in Zapata, TX. 

Surviving her are her husband of 50 years, Frederick A. Dow of Gorham. 

Also surviving are two sons, Fred (Scott) A. Dow and his wife, Tamara of Buxton, ME, and Steven Dow of Gorham, ME; two daughters, Debora Bergeron of Franklin, and Pamela Martens and her husband, David of Orlando, FL; two brothers Fred W. Bragdon of New Gloucester, ME, and Erlon E. Bragdon of Gorham, ME; one sister, Margaret Childers of Beaufort, NC; eight grandchildren, Charles Dow, Jessica Moyers, Sarah and RJ Bergeron, Michael, Peter, , Matthew and Shawn Dow; nine great-grandchildren, Coleman and Jada Dow, Michael, Jacob, Kayla and Carter Moyers and Heidi, Megan and Brooke Dow; and many nieces and nephews. 

 She was also preceded in death by a brother, Warren M. Bragdon. 

A graveside service at Dow's Corner Cemetery in Standish, ME, will be announced this summer.
