Mary Elizabeth Blair, 81

Mary Elizabeth Blair, 81, a resident of Clearview Nursing Home Hagerstown, MD, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003. at the nursing home. 

Mrs. Blair was born May 16, 1921, in Franklin, to the late Cecil and Annie Katherine Kuykendall Shaw.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Henry Blair, Sr., in 1959.  

She was employed by Fairchild Aircraft Hagerstown, MD, and Lincolnshire Elementary cafeteria and most recently Jeanne's Confectionary in Williamsport, MD.  She was a 1939 graduate of Franklin High School.  She was a member of Grace United Methodist church and was a member of the Grace Sunday School class.  She was a past member of the Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway Ladies Auxiliary.  She was a member of the WV Society of Hagerstown / Washington County Area.

Survivors include a son, Williams C. Blair, Downsville, MD; a brother, Norman C. Shaw, Columbus, OH; two granddaughters, Jenny L. Carty and Lisa D. Grastokes, both of Hagerstown, MD; two grandsons, David L. Blair of Hagerstown, MD, and William C. Blair, Downsville, MD; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  

She was predeceased by one son, Paul Henry Blair, Jr.; one sister, Pauline Shank; and one brothers, Edwin Shaw.

Funeral services were held Friday at Osborne Funeral Home in St. Williamsport, MD, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Robert S. Barton officiating.  Interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery, Clear Spring, MD.

David M. Malavase, 66 

Retired Master Chief Petty Officer David M. Malavase, 66, of Virginia Beach, VA, died April 17, 2003, at his home of multiple myeloma. 

Master Chief Malavase was born in Hamden, CT, and was the son of the late Galileo Malavase.  He retired after 28 years with the U.S. Navy as a sonar technician. Dave was an avid hunter and fisherman with strong interests in astronomy and science. He attended worship services at the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. 

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, the former Frances L. Teets. 

Also surviving are his mother, Mabel Malavase of Hamden, CT; sister, Gail Murdough of Florida; Aunt Hazel Carofano of California; many devoted cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews, friends and his faithful friend and pet, Honig. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Beach S.P.C.A. or to one's favorite charity. 

A memorial service with military honors was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, Virginia Beach, VA, with Chaplain Edward L. Richardson, officiating.  Burial will be private. 

SPC George Mitchell, Jr.   

SPC George Arthur Mitchell, Jr., of Antioch, and formerly of Danville Hill, died while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom on Monday, April 7, 2003.

 Born May 20, 1967, in Lebanon, PA, he was the son of George A. Mitchell, Sr., of Enola, PA, and Cynthia F. (Kriser) Mitchell of Lebanon, PA. 

SPC Mitchell was a graduate of Lebanon High School Class of 1985.  After 10 years of life as a civilian in the Army Reserves, Mitchell re-enlisted in may, 2002, as part of 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Stewart, GA.  On September 20, 2003, Mitchell was sent to Kuwait.  It was not his first time there, he had fought in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. 

While serving in the military, George has received numerous awards and certificates including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

George was a member of the Danville Community Church and the Western Maryland Gundog Association.

Surviving in addition to his parents, are his wife, Brenda Sue (Purinton) Mitchell; his children, Bailee and Josh at home, Christopher Mitchell of Lebanon, PA, and stepson, Jeff Greco of Cumberland, MD; a brother, David Mitchell of Lebanon, PA; a half brother, Gabriel Mitchell of Enola, PA; a step-brother, Joe Mitchell; father and mother-in-law Edward and Levonna Purinton of Danville, MD.  

Funeral services were held at the Danville Community Church, Rawlings, MD, Monday, April 28, at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend C. Waco Biser officiating. 

Interment followed in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser, with full military honors accorded by the US Army Honor Guard.

Clarence Baker, Jr. 66

Clarence W. Baker, Jr., age 66, of Mount Vernon, OH, died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, OH.

Mr. Baker was born Sept. 4, 1936, in Mount Vernon, OH, the son of Clarence W. and Gladys (Doup) Baker.  He had been a lifetime resident of Knox County. 

He was a retired farmer and employee of the American National Can Corp. in Mount Vernon, OH, and had been employed there for 35 years.  He was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church.  

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Betty (Day) Baker, formerly of Riverton; his daughter, Elizabeth Baker of Mount Vernon, OH; four sisters, Kathleen (Lawrence) Layman of Fredericktown, OH, Donna Nichols, Janet Nichols and Opal Carter, all of Mount Vernon, OH: and two brothers, Paul (Debbie) Baker and Gene Baker, all of Mount Vernon, OH. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald Baker. 

Funeral services was conducted at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Sanford officiating.  A private burial was held at the Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
