Paul B. Knight, 82

Paul Blane Knight, 82, of Fulks Run, VA, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Knight was born on May 30, 1927, in Rockingham County, VA, and was a son of the late Jack and Cliffie Cladwell Knight.

He lived his entire life in the Peak community and was a member of Peak Pentecostal Church.

He was married to the former Ruby Hoover, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are four children, Speedy Knight of Harrisonburg, VA, Avis Knight and Carol Knight, both of Fulks Run, VA, and Wanda Smith of Brandywine; two sisters, Thelma Brooks and Lorraine Boone of Fulks Run, VA; and one brother, Lanny Knight of Fulks Run, VA; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Rickie Knight and Ronnie Knight; one sister, Gladys Knight; and two brothers, Ted Knight and Ralph Knight.

The Rev. David Kile and J.B. Shoemaker will conduct a funeral service today at 2 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, Harrisonburg, VA.  Burial will follow at Mount Clinton Cemetery.

Edward Judy

Edward Judy, 82, of Riverton died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Nella's Nursing Home at Elkins.

He was born March 17, 1928, at Riverton and was the son of the late Oscar Judy and Verdie Bennett Judy.

He was a farmer.

He is survived by his first wife, Mary Ada Mallow of Wardensville, and by his second wife, Carol Sue Bennett Judy of Riverton.

Also surviving are six daughters, Joanne Mallow, Mary Ann Knight, Debbie Grogg and Lucy Kimble, all of Harrisonburg, VA,  Martha Sager of Baker and Joann Warner of Elkins; four sons, Jeff Kimble of Circleville, Timmy Bennett of Fishersville, VA, Jimmy Bennett of Martinsburg and Paul Edward Judy of Romney; one sister, Gladys Swisher of Romney; 34 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Riley.

Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Stanley Kile officiating.  Burial will be at the Bland-Raines Cemetery at Riverton.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service today.

Virginia Lea Ruddle

Virginia Lea (Murphy) Ruddle, 81, of Franklin, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mrs. Ruddle was born in Franklin on Nov. 8, 1928, the daughter of the late Samuel (Aug. 1, 1989) and Eva Mae Rexrode Murphy (Nov. 2, 1994).

She was a 1947 graduate of Franklin High School, a member of Ruddle Presbyterian Church, a Homemaker and seamstress.

On Dec. 25, 1948, she married Richard Reeves Ruddle, who survives in Franklin.

Also surviving are two sons, Richard Ruddle, Jr., and John Ruddle and wife, Linda, all of Franklin; one brother, Junior Sterling Murphy and wife, Mary of Franklin; one niece, Patricia Contrades of Woodbridge, VA; and one step-grandaughter, Sandy Kile Richards and husband, David of Shamong, NJ.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Ruddle Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Lee Hand officiating.  Interment was in the Ruddle Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ruddle Presbyterian Church, Pendleton Manor or the Pendleton County Historical Society.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.

Ina Gladys Whetzel

Ina Gladys Whetzel, 87, of Franklin died Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

She was born April 9, 1923, at Smoke Hole and was the daughter of the late Obed Berkley Kimble and Vergie Landes Kimble.

She was retired from the laundry department at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, and was a member of the House of Prayer Pentecostal Church in Franklin.

On May 28, 1941, she married Charles Roy Whetzel, who preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 2003.  They were married for 61 years.

Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Kile of Petersburg, Bonnie Rexrode and husband, Orville Lee of Sugar Grove, and Frances Ruddle and husband, Randy of Franklin; four sons, Charles Lee Whetzel and wife, Margaret of Franklin, Cletus Whetzel and wife, Sandra of Baltimore, MD, Paul Whetzel and wife, Midge of Petersburg, and Gary Whetzel and wife Kim of Norfolk, VA; three sisters, Rosetta Hartman of Franklin, Loretta Huffman of Arthur and Hilda Rohrbaugh of Maysville; two brothers, Roy Kimble of Upper Tract and Delmas Kimble of Arthur; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by six brothers.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Revs. Joseph Eversole, Harold Cullers and Randy Miller officiating.  Burial was at Cherry Hill Cemetery at Upper Tract.

Larry David Alt

Larry David Alt, 58, of Upper Tract died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at his home.

He was born June 19, 1951, at Petersburg and was the son of the late Curtis Alt and Goldie Kimble Alt.

He had worked for Lantz Construction for 12 years, had been past fire chief for the Upper Tract Volunteer Fire Dept. and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Petersburg.

He is survived by one daughter, Tonya Simon and husband, Bobby of Brandywine; two sons Jared Alt and Jessica Vance and Preston Alt, all of Upper Tract; three brothers, Glenville Alt and Denton Alt, both of Upper Tract and Norman Alt of Harrisonburg, VA; one grandson, Justin Simon; two granddaughters, Kaitlyn Todd and Madison Alt; and his former wife, Terri Kimble of Upper Tract.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Bishop J. Stephen Kimble officiating.  Burial was at the Kline Cemetery.

Shirley Yvonne Wiser

Shirley Yvonne Wiser, 72, of Riverdale, MD passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010.

Born March 4, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Edna Lambert of Franklin.

Her husband of 49 wonderful years, Elton Wiser, Jr. survives.

Also surviving are children, Jerry, Vicki (Ed), Mick (Rebecca), Candi (Allen) and Kym (Nicole); grandchildren, Shelby, Samantha, Eddie, Rachel, Taylor, Michael, Erin, Reece and Andrew; and siblings, Lorena, Mattie, Cornelia, Louise, Betty Jo, John and Dale.

Funeral services will be held at Calvary Memorial Baptist Church, Hyattsville, MD, today at 1:30 p.m.  Interment will be at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, MD.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gasch’s Funeral Home, P.A., Hyattsville, MD.

Gary Thompson

Gary Thompson, 69, of Kingwood died Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Preston Memorial Hospital with loving family by his side.

He was born Feb. 25, 1941, in Albright, a son of the late Frank and Ida Mae Arnold Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was a distinguished contractor in Kingwood, running his own business in wiring, plumbing and heating since 1976.  He and his son have done service work for many individuals in and around Kingwood.  He loved spending time at his farm and campground near Franklin.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting and always was very passionate in having a big garden and potato patch.

His loving wife of 50 years, Melba Jean Sanders Thompson, survives.

Also surviving are a son, Gary Thompson, Jr., of Kingwood; a granddaughter, Stephanie Thompson of Kingwood; two brothers, Larry Thompson of Kingwood and James Thompson of Kent, OH; a sister, Linda Hillery Barr of Kingwood; a half sister, Patty Johnson of Charleston; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Riffle of Freedom, PA.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son; a brother, Timothy Thompson; and a half brother, Robert Riffle.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Browning Funeral Home, Kingwood.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Jean Mays, 81

Jean Wheaton Mays, 81, of Palmyra, PA, died Thursday, April 29, 2010, at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 9, 1928, in Upper Tract and was the daughter of the late Earl and Lena Heavener Wheaton.

She was a faithful member of Derry Presbyterian Church and Derry Seniors.  She enjoyed cooking and loved spending time with her devoted family, most of all, her beloved grandchildren.

Her loving husband of 61 years, Ebur F. Mays, Jr., survives.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Dr. David Griffin, of Palmyra, PA; one son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Roxanne Mays of Fleetwood, PA; two grandchildren, Nikki and John Griffin; three sisters, Louise Mullenax and Emma Kate Hathaway, both of Upper Tract, and Patricia Swecker of Franklin; and one brother, Richard Wheaton of Florida.

She was also preceded in death by an infant son, David Ebur Mays.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey, PA, with The Reverend Dr. Richard L. Houtz officiating.  Interment was at Hershey Cemetery, Hershey, PA.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 335 South 8th Street, Lebanon, PA 17042.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rothermel Funeral Home in Palmyra, PA.
