Virginia L. Bargar

The funeral for Virginia M. lLmbert Bargar was held at Stallings Funeral Home, Pasadena, MD, on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. Burial followed immediately at Meadow Ridge Cemetery, Elkridge, MD. 

Mrs. Bargar died March 28, 2004, at the Future Care Nursing Home, Arnold, MD, where she had been a resident for the last two years. 

She was born Oct. 4, 1921, at Bartow, and as a small child moved to Cherry Grove with her parents, Troy L. and Elsie B. Lambert.

She grew up in Pendleton County where she graduated from Circleville High School.  she attended Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Va, and Shepherdstown Teachers College, Shepherdstown. 

She was a certified school teacher and taught briefly at cherry Grove School.  In 1941, she moved to Baltimore, MD, area where she worked in a defense plant until her marriage to William L. (Jim) Bargar in 1943.  She then became a homemaker. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Bargar, Sr., on December 10, 2003; two sisters, Clara Marie Lambert and Geraldine Ruth Lambert (infant); and one brother, Jennings Dice Lambert.  

Surviving are three sons, William L. Bargar, Jr., Woodbridge, VA, Mitchell Bargar, Blorida, and Dale Bargar of Glen Burnie, MD; two daughters, Gail R. Schempf, Pasadena, MD, and Carol Dempsey, Colombia, MD; four sisters, Etta K. Shiflett, Millersville, MD, Wilda Grace Bennett, Seneca Rocks, Christina L. Kisamore, Mt. Crawford, VA, and Evelyn Allen of Severna Park, MD; one brother, Forrest Ray Lambert, Baker; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Mrs. Bargar was a faithful member of the Living Church of God.

Paul W. Eye

Paul W. Eye, 87, of Moyers, died Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.  

Mr. Eye was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Moyers and was the son of the late Charles Arthur Eye and Carrie L. Wimer Eye. 

  He was employed at the Sugar Grove Naval Station and worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways.  He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and attended St. Paul's Independent Lutheran Church in Moyers. 

His wife, Mary Glenna Propst Eye, preceded him in death on March 31, 1994.  They were married May 15, 1939. 

He is survived by a daughter, mary Louise Waldschlager of McGaheysville, VA; a son, Harry A. Eye of Moyers; a sister Margie Denhartigh of Racine, WI; a brother, Charles "Jim" Eye of Franklin; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 

The Rev. Jerry Smith conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Moyers.

Martha B. Painter

Martha Belle Painter, 98, of Elkins, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at the home of Kay Richards in Elkins, where she had lived for the past four years. 

Mrs. Painter was born Dec. 25, 1905, in Clay County and was a daughter of the late William Clark Summers and Anna Bell Moore Summers.

She graduated from Glenville College, and attended Bridgewater College and Ohio University.  She was a schoolteacher in Clay County from 1928 to 1934 and in Pendleton County in the 1940s. 

She and her husband, Bill, owned and operated Bill's Place at Seneca Rocks for 24 years.  They moved to Athens, OH, and ran a dairy farm for a few years, moved to Pennsylvania for a few years and eventually moved back to Riverton and built the Gateway Restaurant in 1966.  

Her husband of 64 years, William McKinley Painter, preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1998. 

She is survived by a daughter, Nita Kay Richards of Elkins with whom she lived for the past four years; an adopted daughter, Mary Thompson of Elkins who had taken care of Martha during the day for the last three years; two sons, Mark Painter of Harrisonburg, VA, and Jon Painter and wife Judy of Zelienople, PA; two sisters, Elaine Stahl of Las Vegas, NV, and Althea Bartlett of Green River, WY; 10 grandchildren, Linda Briner and husband, Bowen of Ventura, CA, Craig Allen of Newark ,OH, Nadine DeStefano of Lima, OH, Danielle Light of Petersburg, Eric Painter and wife, Melissa of Zelienople, PA, Elissa Chrismer and husband, Scott, of Pittsburgh, PA, Jill Randall and husband Randy of Wasilla, AK, Aaron Richards and wife Patricia of Riverton, Rebekah Harden of Apex, NC, and Marti Homer and husband, Jason of Elkins; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four step Grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by one son, Waldo "Buck" Allen, seven brothers and two sisters. 

The Revs. Paul O'Gorek and Lynn Ryder conducted the funeral at 1 p.m. Monday at the Seneca Rocks Presbyterian Church.  Burial was at  the North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, by Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.

Edith S. Harper

Edith S. Harper, 93, of Moyers, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin. 

Mrs. Harper was born July 23, 1910, in Moyers and was the daughter of the late Henry Simmons and Minnie Bodkins Simmons.  

She was employed at the Franklin Garment Company and the Virginia Trout Hatchery.  She and her husband had served as mail carriers for the Franklin to Doe Hill, VA, route for 14 years.  She was a member of the Sandy Ridge Church of the Brethren.

On July 1, 1935, she married Alva Lester Harper, who preceded her in death  Nov. 28, 1995. 

She is survived by two sons, H. Paul Harper of Fishersville, VA, and Dover R. Harper of Harrisonburg, VA; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

She was also preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. 

The Rev. Jerry Smith conducted the funeral 1 p.m. Monday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin.  Burial was at Sugar Grove Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

Mary B. Wanless, 89

Mary B. Wanless, 89, of Cumberland, MD died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at the Allegany County Nursing Home. 

Born on April 2, 1915, at Brood (Onego), she was the daughter of the late Preston Bennett and Zettie (Kisamore) Bennett. 

Mrs. Wanless was a retire Field Enterprises sales manager.  She was an active member of Centre Street United Methodist Church and Sarah Circle of the United Methodist Women, receiving the special lifetime membership of the United Methodist Women Award in 2002. 

She especially enjoyed making hundreds of pounds of candy for the annual church bazaar and setting up and working at the rummage sales.  She also enjoyed making quilts, braided and hooked rugs, which she demonstrated at Heritage Days for many years. 

She is survived by one son, William B. Wanless and wife, Sandra, Leesburg, VA; three daughters, Lucille E. Koontz, Iowa City, IA, Helen L. Conroy, Glen Ellyn, IL, and Karen L. Walizer and husband Royce, Cumberland, MD; three brothers, Byron Lambert, Bridgewater, VA, Quentin Bennett, Riverton, and Dice Bennett, Hambleton, one sister, Emma Ray, Miami, FL; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.  She held a special place in her heart for Jay Miller. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Cloverly Bryan Wanless; three sisters, Virgie Lehman, Grace Price and Nancy Golden; two brothers, Marshall Bennett and Joseph Bennett; and two sons-in-law, Franklin Koontz and Joseph Conroy. 

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Kight Funeral Home, Cumberland, MD, with the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna officiating.  

Interment and graveside services were in the North Fork Cemetery, Riverton. 

The family has requested that contributions take the form of donations to Centre Street United Methodist Church, 217 N. Centre St., Cumberland, MD  21502.
