Vernon Clay Simmons

Vernon Clay Simmons, age 83 of Franklin, passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

He was born at Rexrode on December 25, 1928, the son of the late Ralph (Sep. 22, 1973) and Mabel Louella Tichenor Simmons (Nov. 23, 1999).

Mr. Simmons was a 1947 graduate of Franklin High School and a member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church. He retired in 1990 from Coca Cola, having worked for 36 years as a District Manager. He was a US ARMY Veteran having served in Korea.

His wife, Ruth Bennett, whom he married Oct, 8, 1951, survives

Also surviving are two sisters, Charlene Hubbard and husband Robert of Kensington, MD, Lula Belle Morton and husband Paul of Franklin; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin Ralph and Edgar Leroy Simmons; two sisters, Mabel Arlene and Charlotte Louise Simmons.

Funeral services were held Monday, at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Bob Anderson and Rev.

Bob Hubbard officiating. Entombment was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, with military graveside services conducted by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Billy Stephens, Sr., 71

Billy Joe Stephens, Sr., 71, of Grottoes, VA passed away Friday, April 27, 2012 at his home.

He was born in Round Mountain, AR, on January 30, 1941, and was a son of the late Lee and Lilly (Sanson) Stephens.

Mr. Stephens worked as a clerk for CVS in Waynesboro and retired from the U.S. Navy.

On October 12, 1979, he was united in marriage to Sandy (Irvine) Stephens, who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Melody Stephens and partner Beth Hall of Virginia Beach, VA, Theresa

Johnson and husband Mike of Franklin, Annette Outlaw and husband William of Grandy, NC, and Lori Stephens of Ormond Beach, FL; four sons Phillip Stephens of Baskervile, VA, Billy Stephens, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, Charles Stephens and wife Monica and JD Stephens and wife Laura all of Grottoes, VA; four sisters, Lena Friddle of Susanville, CA, Hazel Friddle of Conway, AR, Marlyn Stephens, and Carolyn Hambright all of Conway, AR; two brothers, John Stephens and wife Desslie of Mayflower, AR;, and Romie Stephens and wife Margie of Conway, AR. He is also survived by 29 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Stephens; and two brothers, Robert and James Stephens.

A funeral service was held Monday, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes, with Pastor James Kite officiating.

Burial followed at St. Paul's Cemetery in Weyers Cave, with Military Grave Rites performed by Dayton American Legion Post 27.
