Joseph Richard Steffl, 30, a resident of the Faulkner Road, near Bowden, departed this life Sunday afternoon April 28, 2002 as a result of a kayaking accident near Bemis.

He was born Oct. 20, 1971, at Wooster, OH, a son of Richard Steffl and Shirley Flick Steffl, who survive at Point Pleasant, OH. On Dec. 20, 1999, at Elkins, he was married to the former Robin Dadisman, who survives at Elkins.

Also surviving are two sisters, Julie Steffl, Chapel Hill, NC, Melissa Walther, Stefene, Bermuda,; paternal grandmother, Wilma Steffl, Point Pleasant, OH; two stepsons, Cody and Sam Wagner, Moatsville, and his mother-in-law, Kenneth Dadisman, Philippi.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Walter Steffl and Victor and Martha Flick Bunyon and his father-in-law, Kenneth Dadisman.

Mr. Steffl was an outstanding football and baseball player during his middle schoow years, was a graduate of Bellaire Saint John High School at Bellaire, OH, with the class of 1990, attended West Liberty State College and was a 1998 graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College, receiving his bachelor of scinece degree in medical science. He was a physician's assistant for Mason Todd Corder, DO, from May of 1998 until April of 2000. He was a former employee of the Broaddus Hospital at Philippi, served as physician's assistant and acting administrator of the Northern Pocahontas County Health Clinic at Durbin at the time of his death. He also worked at the Tri County Health Center at Rock Cave, was an emergency medical technician, affiliated with the Bartow-Franklin-Durbin Rescue Squad at Durbin, was a member of the Pocahontas County Search and Rescue Team. He was a member of the American Academy of Physician' Assistants; the National Academy of Physicians' Assistants and the West Virginia Primary Care Association. He was an avid outdoorsman and was adored by his child patients. He was a Catholic.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Elkins with Pastor R.D. Ice officiating. Mr. Steffl will then be moved to the Borkoski Funeral Home at Adena, Ohio, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday.

Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Friday, May 3, at 11 a.m.

Monsignor John C. Kolesar will officiate and interment will follow at the Holly Memorial Gardens at Colerain, OH.

Anna Belle Bennett Nicholas, 73, of Cherry Grove, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

Mrs. Nicholas was born July 10, 1928, in Cherry Grove and was the daughter of the late Alva and Ida Richmond Bennett.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Big Run Presbyterian Chapel.

On Nov. 3, 1945, she married Vervie Nicholas, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Eugene Nicholas and Jackie Lee Nicholas, both of Cherry Grove; three sisters, Bessie Garsen of Phoenix, AZ, Mable Bennett of Mogadore, OH, and Ruth Mullenax of Cherry Grove; a brother, Allen Bennett of Cherry Grove; and three grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, two brothers, and three sisters.

Pastor William Vandevander and Rev. William Cox conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Big Run Presbyterian Chapel. Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.

Arrangements were by the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

Margie Johnson Simpson Clower, 80, of Franklin, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin.

Mrs. Clower was born July 16, 1921, in Riverton and was a daughter of the late William Claude Johnson and Alpha Hartman Johnson.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church and attended Franklin Assembly of God.

Her first husband, Edward Clyde Simpson, Jr., preceded her in death in 1965.

She is survived by her husband, William Blair Clower, three daughters, Debbie Clower of Harrisonburg, VA, and Donna Warner and Dinah Mitchell, both of Franklin ; two sons, Eddie Simpson and Lanny Marshall, both of Franklin; a sister, Myrtle Johnson of Franklin; two brothers, Roscoe Johnson of Franklin and Leo Johnson, Huttonsville; five grandchildren, Carlton B. Warner, Laura S. Evick, Donetta S. Harman, Jordon R. Marshall and Blair D. Mitchell; and one great-granddaughter, Madison Faith Evick.

She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Roy, Rob, Maurice, Brozie and Arvel Johnson.

The Revs. Calvin Bailey and Steven Landis will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. today at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pendleton county Rescue Squad or the Pendleton Nursing Home.

Helen S. Lam, 85, of Harrisonburg, VA, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had lived since January.

Miss lam was born Sept. 22, 1916, in Brandywine and was the daughter of the late Edwin and Etta Bodkin Swadley.

She had lived in Harrisonburg, VA, since 1937. She was employed at Sancar and later owned and operated Helen's Beauty Shop in Harrisonburg, VA. She was a member of the Valley Church of Christ.

She is survived by a number of cousins and extended family members, James R. Helmick, Blanche Harold, Mary Rexrode, Wesley E. Vellines, III, Joan V. Ashley, John Bowers Vellines, Johnny O. Propst, Joanne Raines, Joe Bodkin, Jr., Garth Bodkin, Norlyn Lee Bodkin, John Bodkin Judy, Charlotte Judy Hammer, Beth Kay Simmons, Evelyn Johnson, Linda Harper, Pam S. Waggy, Virgil Swadley, Terry Lee Swadley and Ruth Swadley Spates.

The Revs. Thomas Tybeck and James Joyner conducted the funeral at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Valley Church of Christ in Harrisonburg, VA. Burial followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

Eston N. Smith, 84, of Upper Tract, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mr. Smith was born April 20, 1918, and was the son of the late Jared B. and Ida Virginia Waggy Smith.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.

David Peerce Van Meter III, 83, Petersburg, passed away at his home on Sunday, the 28th of April 2002.

Known to many of his friends as "Dave" or "Porky," he was born at Mitchell Station, AL, on Aug. 27, 1918, the son of the late Wilson Hopkins and Minnie Susan Smith Van Meter.

In 1927, he, his parents and a sister, Mary Sue Van Meter, who survives moved to Petersburg, where he had resided until his death.

During World War II, he served with the Army in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation. He served as a Grant County court commissioner and a director of the Potomac Valley Bank. He was a director and twice president of Rockingham Poultry Marketing Co-op, a member and past president of the West Virginia Poultry Association, a director with the southwestern Poultry and Egg Association, and committee member to both the Baltimore District and National Advisory Board of Farm Credit. He was a former member of Kiwanis and a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church. He was actively engaged in farming with broiler chickens and beef cattle.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, the former Martha Chenoweth; one daughter, Pamela Sue Gobert, Houston, TX; four sons, Wilson H. "Hoppy" of Petersburg, C. Sterling of Saratoga, CA, David P., IV of Petersburg, and Charles A. Van Meter of Boston, MA; a sister Mary Sue Van Meter, Baltimore, MD; and eight grandchildren.

The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Petersburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bruce A. Macbeth officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Petersburg Presbyterian Church, Moomau Public Library or the WV Poultry Association.

Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, was in charge of the services.

Arlie Warner, 89, a resident of Job, died Friday, April 26, 2002, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Riverton.

Mr. Warner was born Nov. 20, 1912, at Cherry Grove a son of the late Charlie Noah Warner and Mary Wimer Warner.

He attended the four-room school at Hunting Ground, was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army at the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He had worked for the United States Forest Service for 20 years, retired from the General Motors Corporation at Cleveland, OH, after 10 years of service, and was a retired farmer. He attended the Church of God and was a member of the Disabled Veterans, the H.W. Daniel's Post #29, American Legion.

He was married in Michigan, to former Vera White, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Roland Warner and wife, Diana, Job; two daughters, Sandra Cooper and husband, Wilmoth, Job, and Pauline Sponaugle, Harrisonburg, VA; four brothers, Ray Warner and wife, Nola, Riverton, Charlie Warner and wife, Betty, Cherry Grove, Merl Warner, Seneca Rocks, and Paul Warner and wife Pauline, Cleveland, OH; three sisters, Mable Sponaugle, Franklin, Ollie Johnson, Bartow, and Priscilla Mullenax and husband, Brooks, Cherry Grove; five grandchildren, Harris Cooper, Kevin, Rex, and Trenton Warner and Eber Dale Sponaugle; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dewitt and Roy Warner.

Final rites were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home, Elkins, with Pastor Glenden Berg officiating. Graveside services were conducted, and interment followed at the North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton.
