Denny G. Glover

Denny G. Glover, 80, of Franklin died Friday, April 22, 2011, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Glover owned and operated Denny’s Barber Shop & Shoe Repair for 48 years. He was a veteran, having served eight years in the US Air Force, was a charter member of the Franklin Ruritan Club and member of the Franklin United Methodist Church.

Also surviving are one daughter, Tammy Glover; two sons, Clarke Glover and Scott Glover, both of Harrisonburg, VA; one brother, Homer Glover, Jr. Of Beckley; and five grandchildren, Whitney, Callie, Kalin, Connor and Nikolas Glover.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Curtis, Bill and John Glover; and two sisters, Wanda Sponaugle and Cornelia Glover.

Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin with military graveside services conducted by members of the Pendleton County Honor Guard.

She was born Dec. 11, 1938, at Mozer and was the daughter of the late Isaac Marshall Vandevander and Hazel Elizabeth Miller Vandevander.

Mrs. Hartman was a cook at Ikey’s Restaurant and worked in housekeeping at Thompson’s Motel. She attended Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church.

Surviving are one sister, Geraldine S. Hevener of Upper Tract; and one brother, John R. Vandevander of Upper Tract.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter; two brothers, Isaac Vandevander and Joe Allen Vandevander; and a special friend, Joyce Adamson.

Funeral services were held April 21 at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Rev. Leon Hevener officiating. Burial was at Kline Cemetery.

Troy Coolidge Yokum, 90, departed this life Sunday morning April 24, 2011, at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center in Elkins.

He was born Sunday, July 4, 1029, at Bonner Mountain, Dry Fork community, a son of the late Dennis Yokum and Lucy Greenwalt Yokum.

Mr. Yokum attended the schools of Harman and was a graduate of Davis High School. He was a lifelong farmer and a cement finisher, having belonged to the Brick Layers Union. He was a former custodian at the Harman School and a former guard at the forestry camp at Davis.

He was a member of the Randolph County Democratic Executive Committee for many years. He attended the Harperton Sunday School and was a member of the Church of the Brethren at Harman.

On July 19, 1941 at Oakland, MD, he was married to Nora Grace Harper Yokum, who preceded him death on Nov. 12, 2010.

Surviving are four sons, Robert Dennis Yokum and wife, Janice of Bruceton Mills, Theodore McClure Yokum and financee Judy of Harman; Troy Michael Yokum and wife, Cynthia of Seneca Rocks, and John Wade Yokum and wife, Renee of Elkins; two sisters, Ruby Silber of Cumberland, MD and Gladys Heitz of Thomas; nine grandchildren, Randy, Rick, Dennis, Jamey, Teresa, Kevin, Amanda, Shane and Nicole; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded to death by one brother, Kelly Yokum; one sister, Hilda Stanhagen; and one grandson, Tracey Yokum.

Today, Mr. Yokum will be moved to the Church of the Brethren at Harman, where friends may call from 12 noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, Pastor John R. Moyers will officiate. Interment will follow at Jacob C. Harman Cemetery at Harman.

Kenneth R. Burgess, 78, of New Creek, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, VA.

Mr. Burgess was a retired carpenter from Pittsburgh Plate Glass. He was a 1950 graduate of Keyser High School, a US Army Korean Veteran and a protestant by faith.

Surviving are a son, Donald R. Burgess of Mt. Storm; two daughters, Donna Bodkin of Cabins and Sue Alt and husband, Trent of Upper Tract; a brother, Russell Burgess and wife, Martha of New Creek; a sister, Joyce Bosley of Jacksonville, NC; four step-children, John E. Self of Burr, VA, Phillip Tracy Self of Louisa, VA, Patricia Bonner of Keyser and Ellen K. Brown of North Wilkesboro, NC; four granddaughters, Annette McGinnis and husband, Chris, Tiffany Alt, Brooke Alt and Kelsey Alt; two great-grandchildren, Landon and Lydia McGinnis; a special nephew, Chuck Burgess; a special niece; Martha Lee Pritts; step-grandchildren; and step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on April 15 with the Reverends David Davis and Sonny Dodds officiating. Interment followed in Burgess Cemetery, New Creek, where military honors were accorded.

Virgil D. Puffenberger, 85, of Franklin departed this life on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at Pendleton Manor in Franklin.

He was born March 25, 1926, at Fort Seybert and was the son of the late George Leslie and Ressie Lee Puffenbarger.

A graduate of Franklin High School, he received a B.S. degree from Shepherds College and a M.A. degree from George Washington University.

Mr. Puffenberger was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Navy on the Philippine Island. He was a member of the Franklin Ruritan Club and the Bethlehem Church of the Brethren, where he taught Sunday School for several years.

Much of his life was devoted to working in the education field. He was a teacher and guidance counselor in Maryland for 20 years. In 1974, he came home to Pendleton County and served as principal at Franklin High School. Before his retirement in 1981, he served as assistant superintendent of Pendleton County Schools for four years. After retiring, he worked as a substitute teacher in Pendleton, Grant and Hardy counties for several years.

Surviving are two sons, Gregory K. Puffenberger and wife, Tammy of Hagerstown, MD; and Kevin E. Puffenberger and wife, Heather of Upper Tract; three grandchildren, Tyer Matthew Puffenberger, Ashlyn Grace Puffenberger and Kile Jacob Puffenberger; two brothers, Carl Puffenbarger of Forest Heights, MD, and One Puffenbarger and wife, Barbara of Fort Seyberts; two sisters, Barbara Barker and husband, John of Christiansburg, VA and Edith Winegard and husband, Shirldon of Roanoke, VA.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Irvin Puffenbarger, Dewey Puffenbarger and Bruce Puffenbarger; one sister, Goldie Puffenbarger; and one grandson, Kyle Hunter Puffenberger.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin with Pastors Glenn Sites and Richard Boggs officiating. Burial was at the Puffenbarger Cemetery at Fort Seybert with military graveside services by members of the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Violet Mae Kimble, 88, formerly of Jenkins Run Road, Moorefield died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Berkeley Springs Rehab & Nursing in Berkeley Springs.

She was born May 10, 1922, in Smoke Hole and was a daughter of the late Salem Kimble and Hannah Catherine (VanMeter) Kimble.

She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Arvella Kimble, Mandy Shirk, Hadie Kimble, Glona Kimble and Zernie Kimble; and four brother, Ralph Kimble, Harvey Kimble, Charles Kimble and Jesse Kimble.

Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Richard Whetzel officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Alma Elizabeth (Brooks) George, 69, of Petersburg went to be with her Lord and Savior Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Grant Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 6, 1941, in Cabins and was a daughter of the late Marvin L. Brooks and Elizabeth M. (Ours) Brooks.

Mrs. George graduated from Petersburg High School in 1959. She was employed with the USDA in Washington, DC, and later as secretary for Judge and Mrs. D. E. Cuppett Jr. of Petersburg for over 30 years.

She was a faithful member of the Riverside Church, Cabins, where she was church treasurer, choir director and Sunday school teacher.

Also surviving are one son, Pastor Tommy A George and wife, April of Petersburg; three grandchildren, Haley Greathouse, Madison George and Caleb George; two sisters, Delores G. Vetter of Moorefield and Betty Elaine Bland of Petersburg; one brothers, Leroy M. Brooks and wife, Darlene of Maysville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Riverside Church at Cabins with Rev. Kenneth Phares. Interment followed in the North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton.

Martha Lynn Shaver Clarke, 69, of Fort Seybert and formerly of Winchester, Va, died Thursday, April 21, 2011, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.

She retired from the Winchester Medical Center in 2004 after 25 years of service. She worked as a secretary in the respiratory therapy department and the chaplain’s office and more recently as volunteer coordinator.

Mrs. Clarke attended Franklin Presbyterian Church in Franklin and was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Denton, TX. She was formerly a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, VA. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Moorefield and formerly in Winchester, VA.

Also surviving are two sons, David S. Clarke and his wife, Beth of Berryville, VA, and Darren T. Clarke and his wife, Suzanne of Tampa, FL; five grandchildren, Patrick Clarke, Benjamin Clarke, Katherine Clarke, Savannah Clarke and Mackenzie Clarke; one great grandchild, Elias Hayes, a sister, Mary S. Dettra of McLean, VA, and two brothers, Bennie N. Shaver of Milam and E. Eugene Shaver of Staunton, VA.

A funeral service was conducted Wednesday at the Omps Fuenral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, VA, with Chaplain Peter Ford officiating. Interment was private.
