Charles Ray Gum, 79, of Penn Laird, VA, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Avante at Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Gum was born Nov. 3, 1922, at Forks of the Water in Highland County, and was a son of the late Charles D. and Minnie Catherine Simmons Gum.

He was a member of the United Brethren Church and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a route tire salesman.

On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Virginia Crummett, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Karen Shirkey of Penn Laird, VA, and Kathy Lam of Weyers Cave, VA; two sons, Larry Gum and Terry Gum, both of Harrisonburg, VA; four sisters, Mabel Samples of Monterey, VA, Matie Rexrode, Franklin, Helen Helmick, Mount Crawford, VA, and Dorothy Hedrick, Blue Grass, VA; a brother, June Gum, Springfield, VA; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jerry Ginn conducted the funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA. Burial was in the Puffenbarger Cemetery near Monterey, VA.

George William Drake, 90, of Franklin and formerly of Williamsport, MD, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Drake was born Jan. 20, 1912, to the late George Hillary and Mina Landis Lynch Drake.

He was self-employed contractor, retiring in 1976. He was a graduate of Williamsport High School, Williamsport, MD. Having served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII in the 15th Air Depot Group in the South Pacific, he received many military awards which include: American Theatre Ribbon, Asiastic Pacific Theatre Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Victory Medal. He was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church in Falling Waters. He was a member of Potomac Post #202 American Legion Williamsport, MD, VFW Post #2370, AF&AM Berkeley Lodge #37, Shrine club Hagerstown, MD, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Shrine Alighan Temple, Royal Order of Kentucky Colonels, Royal Order of Jesters CT #117, and B.P.O.E. #378 Hagerstown, MD.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Harper Drake, Franklin ;and two nieces, Betty Walling, Rockville, MD, and Carole Greco, Manassas, VA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Bernice Meckley and one brother, Paul Drake.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport, MD, at 11 a.m. with Rev. William Hartsfield and Rev. Ray Roberson officiating. Interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport, MD.

Andrew Stanley Miklos III, 65, of Millboro, VA, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Miklos was born Feb. 22, 1937, in Willkes-Barre, Pa, and was the son of Claudean V. Forbes Fisher of Orlando, FL and the late Andrew S. Miklos II.

He was a former employee of Jane Colby Industries in Millboro, VA, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his step-father, Clifford Fisher of Orlando, FL; two daughters, Billie Jo Heishman of Greenville, IN, and Adell Miklos of New Caney, TX; four sons, Brian Miklos and Gary Coffman, both of Harrisonburg, VA, Jeffrey Miklos of Franklin, and Robert Miklos of New Caney, TX; and eight grandchildren.

His body was cremated and a graveside service was held Monday at the Millboro Christian Church Cemetery.

Christie Gail Botkin, 28, of Charlottesville, VA, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical in Charlottesville, VA , as the result of an automobile accident April 5.

Miss Botkin was born Jan. 26, 1974, in Charlottesville, VA, and was the daughter of Vickie Gail Armstrong Botkin of Head Waters, VA, and Roger Dale Botkin of Sugar Grove.

She graduated from Highland High School in 1992 and attended Piedmont Virginia Community College. She was employed by State Farm Insurance company in Charlottesville, VA.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Shirley T. Armstrong of Charlottesville , VA, and Clyde R. Botkin of McDowell, VA; her great-grandfather, Marvin G. Botkin of Waynesboro, VA; aunts, uncles and cousins and a large circle of friends.

She was preceded in death by a paternal grandmother, Violet W. Botkin, and a maternal grandfather, William R. Armstrong.

Freda Lucille Armentrout Harman, 89, of Upper Tract, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. She had lived at the Pendleton Nursing Home in Franklin for the past 1-1/2 years.

Mrs. Harman was born March 9, 1913, in Kline and was a daughter of the late James Oscar Armentrout and Phoebe Jane Greenawalt Armentrout.

She was a member of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church in Mozer.

Her husband, John W. Harman, preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 2000.

She is survived by a son Kelly W. Harman of Harrisonburg, VA; four sisters, Nellie Calhoun, Arbelia Calhoun, Macie Mitchell and Violet Heavner, all of Upper Tract; a half brother, Carroll Lee Dahmer of Big Spring, TX; two grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Stanley Kite conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Horeb United Methodist Church. Burial was at the Kline Cemetery in Kline.

Stephanie Ann Strawderman, 21, of Upper Tract, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in Dorcas, as the result of an automobile accident.

Mrs. Strawderman was born Jan. 24, 1981, in Petersburg and was a daughter of Steve Shockey of Old Fields and Delphia Ketterman Holloway of Petersburg.

She attended Petersburg and Moorefield high schools and was employed at Allegheny Dimensions in Petersburg. She attended Faith Assembly of God Church in Petersburg.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband LaVerne Lane Strawderman; a son, Dalton Strawderman, Upper Tract ; two half sisters, Samantha Holloway of Petersburg and Shannon Shockey of Moorefield; and her grandparents, Katheryn Shockey of Old Fields and Paul and Irene Ketterman of Petersburg.

The Rev. Charles Lomasney conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. Burial was at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg.

Dwight Sterling "Whitney" Moyer, 64, of Criders, VA, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. Moyer was born Nov. 15, 1937, in Criders, VA and was a son of the late Grover C. and Bertha Miller Moyer.

He was a plumber for S.C. Gladwell and Sons in Broadway, VA, for 20 years and was a member of the Damascus Church of the Brethren in Criders, VA, and the West Virginia Bear Hunters Association.

On June 1, 1962, he married the former Sue Nelson, formerly of Circleville, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, John David Moyer of Criders, VA; a daughter, Kathy Ann Fitzwater of Bergton, VA; and three brothers, Carl Moyer of Bergton, VA, and Wilber and Delmer Moyer, both of Criders, VA.

The Rev. Paul O'Gorek conducted a graveside service at 11 a.m., March 30, at the Caplinger Cemetery in Criders, VA.
