Virgil Hahn Swadley, Sr.

Virgil Hahn Swadley, Sr., age 88, who served in the Distrcit of Columbia Fire Department for 28 years, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, due to complicatoins following heart surgery at INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

Swadley was born Aug. 23, 1919 in Brandywine and was a son of the late T. Lee and Eva Viola Swadley. 

HE served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, during which time he spent two and one-half years in Africa, Sicily and Italy.  He was awarded two Purple Hearts.  HE joined the District of Columbia Fire Department in 1945 and retired from service as a Battalion Chief in 1973.  He also served as chief of the McLean, VA, Volunteer Fire Department from 1968 to 1969.  

A resident of McLean, VA and Riverton, he was a member of Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, Kena Shriners and the Sons of the American Revolution.  He was also a member of Sharon Masonic Lodge #327, A.F. & A.M., where he served as Master in 1995.  He was a member of Sharon Chapter #63, Order of the Eastern Star, where he served as Worthy Patron from 1994 to 1995 and 2004 and 2005.  

His beloved wife of 63 years, Ruby Bland Swadley, survives.  

Also surviving are three children and their spouses, Darlene (James) Pickens of Richmond, VA, Sharon (Stephen Schenk) Swadley of Fredericksburg, VA, and Virgil (Erica) Swadley, Jr., of Tucson, AZ; two grandchildren, Erin Pickens (Jonathan) Williams of Richmond, VA, and Andrew Pickens of Arlington, VA; and many nieces, nephews and good friends. 

He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Ruth Spates, Mary, Harry, Lola Propst, Henry, Willie and Terry. 

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday by Rev. Stanley Kile at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.  Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.  Military graveside services were conducted by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.  

Memorials may be made to any volunteer fire department. 

Howard R. Smith, 86

Howard Rankin "Rank" Smith, 86, of Adelphi, MD, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Hillhaven Nursing Center. 

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 9, 1921, in Sugar Grove and was a son of the late Isaac Clay "Bob" and Rosa Florence Puffenbarger Smith. 

He was a member of the Hyattsivlle Seventh-day Adventist Church.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired brick mason.  

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Mae Alvis Smith. 

His second wife, Delores Del Alvis Smith, survives.  

Also surviving are a daughter, Delana Blake of Adelphi, MD; two sisters, Elizabeth Painter and Gladys Fockler, both of Staunton, VA; two brothers, Lou Smith and Wilmer Smith, both of McDowell, VA; and three grandsons. 

A graveside service was held Tuesday at the Highland Seventh-day Adventist Church Center with the REv. Elmer Malcolm and G.W. Obaugh officiating.

Zona M. Turner

Zona Mae Davis Turner, 98, of Onego went to be with her Lord on April 8, 2008, at her home in Onego. 

Mrs. Turner was born Oct. 19, 1909, at Two Springs at Horton and was a daughter of the late Ira Davis and Margaret Conard Davis. 

She was a homemaker, known for her homemade bread, pies, etc., and she loved reading, sewing and gardening.  She was a member of the Onego Church of the Brethren, where she had taught the beginners Sunday school class for 47 years.  

Her husband, Ted Turner, preceded her in death Sept. 19, 1997. 

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy "Sis" Warner and husband, Jim of Onego; six sons, Roosevelt "Rosey" Turner and friend, Mary of Franklin, Herman "Herm" Turner of Durbin, Bruce "Pete" Turner and wife, Helen of Cabins, Lester "Joe" Turner and wife, Nancy of Bloomery, and Ivan "Buck" Turner and wife, Carolyn of Cabins; a sister, Effie George of Harrisonburg, VA; a brother, Coy Davis of Elkins; 18 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.  

She also was preceded in death by seven grandchildren, one step-grandson, one brother, one step-brother, two sisters, two step-sisters and two daughters-in-law. 

Pastor Charles "Dusty" Twigg and the Rev. Greg Adamson conducted the funeral Saturday at Onego Church of the Brethren.  Burial was in the Turner Family Cemetery Onego.
