Maxine Adah VanMeter

Maxine A. (Kimble) VanMeter, 80, of Franklin, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.

Mrs. VanMeter was born Dec. 22, 1925, in Fisher, IL and was the daughter of the late Jack Henry Beyers and Pearl Miller Beyers. 

She retired from the Hanover Shoe company, where she was a sewing machine operator.  she was a member of the Brushy Run Church of God.  

Her first husband of 16 years, Roy Jacob Kimble, preceded her in death Jan. 29, 1991.  

She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Melvin VanMeter, of Franklin; two sons, Wayne H. Kimble of Franklin and Gary Graber of Galax, VA; one brother, Leslie Junior Beyers of Saites, MT; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Danny Kimble, two brothers, Ray Beyers and Raymond Beyers, and one sister, Wanda Hobson.

The Rev. Gary Phillips conducted the Funeral Friday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract.

Jack L. Ritchie, 58

Jack Lee =itchie, 58, of Grottoes, VA, died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at his home. 

Mr. Ritchie was born Jan. 23, 1948 in Bishop, CA, and was the son of the late John Clinton Ritchie and Violet Mae Roadcap Mason.  

He was a certified Brazer and was employed at Dunham-Bush for 37 years and Wayntex for three and one-half years.  He was a member of the Frnaklin Moose Lodge, Harrisonburg Moose Lodge 1686 and the Harrisonburg Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 4150.  

He previously lived on Siple Mountain in Pendleton County. 

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Lee Ritchie of Fulks Run, VA, and Timothy Scott Ritchie of Harrisonburg, VA; a step-daughter, Tina Maria Shifflett of Weyers Cave, VA; a stepson, Emerson P. "Peanut" Nutter of Singers Glen, VA; and eight grandchildren.  

The Rev. Ted Hott will conduct the funeral today at the McMullen Funeral Home in Harriosnburg, VA.  Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Irene W. Eye

Irene W. Eye, 78, of Waynesboro, VA, and formerly of Franklin died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA. 

Mrs. Eye was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Franklin and was the daughter of the late Kennie Waggy and Ida Moyers Waggy. 

She had worked at Thompson's Restaurant and assisted her husband as the Pendleton county Jail caretaker when he was sheriff.  After his death, she moved to Waynesboro, VA, and worked at several restaurants and factories.  

her husband, Samuel don Eye, preceded her in death. 

Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Zelenak of Fairmont; a son, Paul Stephens of Thurmont, MD; two sisters, Cora Link of Staunton, VA, and Lera Newby of Porterville, CA; two granddaughters, Misty and Mickie Dabate; and a number of nieces and nephews.  

She was also preceded in death by one son, David Lee Eye, and three brothers, Isaac, Claude and Roy Waggy.

The funeral was held Sunday at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with the Rev. Stanley Kile officiating.  Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Frnaklin. 

Mildred Branson, 101

Mildred lucille Branson, 101, of Baker died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Life-Care Center in New Market, VA. 

Mrs. Branson was born Feb. 6, 1905, in Lost River and was the daughter of the late Clarence Elhart and Bessie Bowman Haas. 

She was a homemaker and was a member of Lost river United Methodist Church. 

On March 12, 1921, she married George Holmes Branson, who preceded her in death may 24, 1986. 

She is survived by a son, Robert Branson of Lost River; a daughter, Lucille Branson Orndorff of St. Albans; an adopted daughter, Nancy Lloyd of Mathias; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a  niece, Alice Hartman of Franklin.    

The Rev. Deborah Shreve conducted the funeral Thursday at Lost River United Methodist Church.  Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Lost river.

Edsel Phillip Harper

Edsel Phillip Harper, age 79, of East canton, OH, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 11, 2006, in Aultman Hospital, Canton, OH. 

He was born Dec. 22 1926, at Riverton.  He was born to the late Jason D. and Nela (Day) Harper. 

Mr. Harper was an east Canton Resident since 1962.  He retired in 1989 from Heckett Engineers after many years of service. 

Surviving are his wife, Gae M. Harper, to whom he was married 51 years; two sons, David of East Canton, OH, and Jeff of Louisville, KY; two daughters, Darlene and Ron Johnson of Minerva, OH, and Denise Harper of East Canton, OH: three sisters, leva Harper of Warren, OH, Roberta Bennett and husband Quentin of Riverton, and Lona Hinkle and husband, Robert of Petersburg; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  

Melissa Ann Pennington 

Melissa Ann (Kuykendall) Pennington, 24, of Mount Storm, died Friday, March 31, 2006, at the Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, MD, as the result of an accident o Rt. 50, east of Burlington.

Born on Jan. 12, 1982, at Cumberland, MD, she was a daughter of Jeffrey L. Kuykendall, Sr., of Keyser and Dawn M. (Tranum) Parsons and step-daughter of Karl L. Parsons, both of Brandywine.  

Pennington was employed as a corrections counselor at the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in Augusta.  She was also formerly employed with Perkins Restaurant in McHenry, MD, and had received special clearance with the FBI to work with the White Collar Crime Unit in Fairmont.  She was a 2000 graduate of Southern High School in Oakland, MD, attended Potomac State College in Keyser for two years and graduated summa Cum Laude from Fairmont State College in 2005 with degrees in criminal psychology and criminal justice.  Throughout her entire high school and college careers, Pennington was very active in sports of all kinds, but academics were her priority, being named to the honor rolls, dean's lists and president's lists every grading period.  IN addition to being named to the All-Conference volley and softball teams her sophomore year a Potomac State college, she was named at age 13 to the Who's Who Society of Distinguished American High School Students and during her studies at Potomac State, was named to the Society of Distinguished American Junior college Students.  In her youth, she attended the Fountain United Brethren in Christ Churc, Keyser, and more recently attended the Terra Alta Wesleyan Church in Terra Alta, and the Bayard Church of God in Bayard. 

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Michael Wayne Pennington; her beloved pet, Nibbles; a brother Jeffrey L. Kuykendall, II, formerly of Keyser currently stationed with the U.s. Army at Fort Shafter in Honolulu, HI; a sister, Katherine V. "Katie" Kuykendall of Brandywine; grandparents, Nellie and Ward Ashby of Oakland, MD, Gene Kuykendall of Keyser, Margaret and Gerald Oliver of Martinsburg, Bette Branum-Mallow of Keyser, and Joy parsons of Loch Lynn, MD; a great-grandmother, Nellie Rogers of Keyser; her father and mother-in-law, Terry Pennington, III, and wife Lori of Mount Storm; two grand mothers-in-law, Nancy Warnick of Granstville, MD, and Annie Ray of Abingdon, MD; and numerous aunts and uncles, a great-great-aunt and uncle and cousins.  

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Thomas L. Tranum, Jr., Dwight E. Hovis and Clifford Parsons, Sr. 

Funeral services were conducted at the Fountain United Brethren in Christ Church on Saturday with Rev. William McCallister, Pastor Randy Crowe and Pastor Steve White officiating.  Interment was in the Cabin Run Cemetery, Keyser.

Betty R. Jennings

Betty Ruth Delaney Jennings, 84, of Eleanor died Monday, April 3, 2006, at her home. 

Mrs. Jennings was born April 29, 1921, in Parsons  and was a daughter of the late Francis Earl Delaney and Ida Myrtle Baker Delaney. 

She was a homemaker. 

Her husband, Hervy William Jennings, preceded her in death Nov. 13, 1973. 

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ann Mallow and husband, Dr. John Allen Mallow of Upper Tract; three sons, Hervy William Jennings, II, and wife, Betty Lou of Christiansburg, VA, Donald Earl Jennings of Eleanor and the Rev. Dr. George Johnathon Jennings and wife, Midge of Peterstown; a sister, Mary jane Martin of Parsons; a brother, Earl Delaney of Parsons; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.  

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, tom and Albert Delaney, and two sisters, Pauline Mullinax and Dorine Allinder. 

Dr. Jon Jennings and Elder Kerry D. Stauffer conducted the funeral Friday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin.  Burial was at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton.

Leona Kahle, 68

Leona Kahle, 68, of Woodbridge, VA, died April 5, 2006, at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge, VA. 

Born June 11, 1937, at cherry Grove, she was the daughter of the late Foster and Avis Warner.  Her husband, Woodrow E. Kahle, preceded her in death.  Survivng are two sons, John F. Kahle of Winchester, VA, and one grandson, Timothy Kahle; and two brothers, Wayne Warner of Cherry Grove and Foster Warner, Jr., of Gaithersburg, MD. 

Funeral services will be held today at 11:30 a.m. at the Mountcastle Funeral Home, Woodbridge, VA.  Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery.

Lois Lee Bennett, 62

Lois Lee Bennett, 62, a former resident of Dailey, and more recently a resident of Nella's Nursing home at Crystal Springs went home to be with the Lord Tuesday evening, April 4, 2006, at the nursing home. 

She was born Saturday, Sept. 25, 1943, at Hunting Ground, a daughter of Maxwell Harding Bennett, Sr., and Opal Vesta Warner Bennett, who survive at Beverly. 

She attended the Homestead School and the Adult Training Center.  She loved gospel music, dolls and crafts, and she was a Christian. 

Also surviving are three brothers, Maxwell Harding "June" Bennett of Beverly, Michael Lynn Bennett and wife Maggie, and Jeffrey Allan Bennett and wife, Pat, all of Dailey; six nephews, Clinton, Mikie, Jeffrey, Justin, Anthony and William; and one niece, Julie. 

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Amby and Surrila Waybright Warner, and her paternal grandparents, Clinton and peachy nelson Bennett. 

final rites were condcuted aththe Lohr & Barb Funeral Home Chapel, Elkins, on Friday with Pastor Terry Cannoon officiating.  Interment followed at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
